The Torah's Clues

Said the Besht: "A king dropped a gem out of his ring, and gave his favorite son a clue as to its whereabouts. Thus he might show his diligence and sagacity in pleasing his father. Likewise, God has dropped sparks of holiness upon the world. Through His Torah He gives Israel clues regarding the place they have fallen on earth, so that Israel may return them to Him."

Ingathering the Multitude

A famous rav asked the Lubliner: "Why do so many thousands come to you and not to me? I have learned more Talmud than you, and I can discourse on the halacha more profoundly."
The Lubliner replied: "I am likewise surprised at the multitudes who come. Who am I that thousands should seek to learn godliness from me? But perhaps they come to me because I know how little is my worth, and they do not come to you because you are surprised at their failure to come."

Day 164 ¨C Avoid the Gossipmonger
?
?
?
here are, unfortunately, people who forever gossip, perhaps as a result of their inactivity and their need for social involvement. Unless one honestly feels that he can help such a person to mend his ways, he should avoid his company entirely. If contact with such a person unavoidable, it should be minimized to whatever degree possible.T

One must also avoid settings that are prone to discussions of gossip. Ideally, one should find a way to permanently change the nature of conversation at such settings so that those present will be spared the evils of rechilus.

Market Day
?
A merchant who conducts all his business at the regional market has plenty of time off during the long intervals when the market is closed. But can he vacation while the market is open? Certainly not ¡ª that is, if he intends to earn a decent livelihood so that he can provide for his family.
?
In the spiritual realm, this world is the ¡°market¡± and every day is ¡°market day.¡¯¡¯ It is in this world that one must acquire the merits which will earn him the light of the World to Come. If one approaches Torah and mitzvos with laziness and allows his days to pass by with little accomplishment, what will he bring with him when his days on this world are over?
?
King Shlomo exhorts us: ¡°Whatever you are able to do with your might, do it. For there is neither doing nor reckoning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the grave where you are going¡± (Koheles 9:10). A Jew must serve Hashem with the full strength of his spirit, and accomplish whatever is within his power, for the next world is the place of reward where the opportunity for accomplishment is no more. As the Sages comment to the verse, ¡°You shall observe the commandments... that I command you today, to perform them¡± (Devarim 7:11): today ¡ª in this life ¡ª is the time to perform the commandments, while their primary reward is reserved for tomorrow ¡ª that is, for the World to Come (Avodah Zara 4b).
?
How much there is to accomplish! One is not seeking to provide for himself for a few months¡¯ time or even for a few years, but for eternity! Of course, guiding one¡¯s children along the path of Torah is part of providing for oneself in the next world, and this too should be approached with great dedication and care. One who does not have the opportunity to raise children of his own in the way of Torah should strive to help educate other Jewish children. Whatever the nature of one¡¯s mission on this earth, let him go about fulfilling it in the best possible way.
?
[Hillel said:] ¡°And if not now, when?¡¯¡¯

Computer Backup

Shalom,

I don't think there is anyone anymore that doesn't understand the need to?backup the data on one's computers. Just ask yourself:
? ? ? ? "What would I do if my computer crashed?"
? ? ? ? "What can I do about my irreplaceable photos and files?"

I have been an independent computer consultant for close to 40 years and I?know that it is not a question of "if" the hard disk will crash, but "when".

I work with a well known company to offer my clients reliable backup to the?cloud: Backblaze. Besides recommending it to all of my clients, I use it?for my business and personal backups.

And it is affordable. Just NIS 33 a month for UNLIMITED backup.

Day 163 ¨C When the Speaker Cannot be Stopped

?
When one finds himself in the company of someone speaking rechilus and finds it difficult to interrupt the speaker, he must leave. If one cannot bring himself to actually walk away, he must, at the very least, not pay attention to what is being said and must make it clear through facial expression that he disapproves of the discussion.

SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON

?
No Time To Spare

?
The message of Hillel¡¯s question And if I am for myself, what am I? goes further. If the average person were to make an accounting of how his regular day is spent, he would see that only a small part of his time is free for spiritual pursuits. How then can he allow these precious moments to slip by without using them to acquire for himself Torah and mitzvos, an eternal acquisition?
?
When a person works to provide his wife and children with their needs and pay for his children¡¯s Torah education, his efforts bear great fruit. He will receive reward not only for his hours of Torah study, but for his efforts at earning a livelihood as well, for all his strivings were directed toward one essential purpose ¡ª fulfilling Hashem¡¯s will.
?
Such is not the case, however, when one strives for a lifestyle of luxury, to live in an expensive home with lavish decor, and to dress his family in rich taste. In truth, such a person is not really toiling for himself, that is, for his soul¡¯s benefit ¡ª for whose will is he seeking to fulfill, if not his evil inclination? What good will such striving accomplish for his soul? The same can be said of those who labor until their old age so that they can leave a generous inheritance behind for their loved ones. Such effort does not benefit the soul.
?
Hillel exhorts us to use our precious time on this world wisely, and not to let the hours slip by without accomplishment. Let no one delude himself with the notion that a bit of Torah study, and a mitzvah here and there, is sufficient.

The Reward of Charity

The Ropshitzer was told that his Master the Rimanover, blessed a man and that the latter was becoming richer every day. He inquired why this man deserved to receive a blessing of such magnitude. The Rimanover replied: "I merely blessed him that he might enjoy a comfortable living. But the man gives away so much to charity that his fortune must be increased abundantly by Heaven so that he may have sufficient for his personal comforts."

Day 162 ¨C In a Group Setting

?
From the wording of the verse which requires a Jew to reprove his fellow when he sins (Vayikra 19:17), the Sages derive that one must do so without embarrassing the sinner. Thus, when a person is relating gossip in the company of others, it is preferable that a listener change the subject and later rebuke the speaker privately. One may openly protest gossipmongering in a way that causes the speaker discomfort only if there is no other way to bring his monologue to an end.
?
?
SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
Light and Contentment
?
¡°Hillel used to say: If I am not for myself, who will be for me?¡¯¡¯The spiritual world is not like the world of business where one can rely on trusted workers to do his work for him. The term myself refers to one¡¯s soul, which is nourished only through one¡¯s own efforts in the sphere of Torah and mitzvos. Hillel is saying: ¡°If I will not expend effort for my soul¡¯s sake, then who will nourish it with light and contentment?¡¯¡¯ These are not things that can be purchased; they can be attained only through one¡¯s own toil and striving.
?
And, Hillel continues, the spiritual realm is unlike the physical one where a highly skilled craftsman can earn a livelihood working but a few hours a day. As the Mishnah says elsewhere, ¡°The day is short and the task is abundant¡± (Avos 2:20). Thus does Hillel say: ¡°And if I am for myself, what am I?¡¯¡¯ If I were to dedicate my every moment to myself, that is, for my soul¡¯s benefit, could I claim with certainty that I have done enough to earn eternal life in the World to Come?
?
The Talmud relates that when the sage Mar Ukva examined his impressive charity records before his death, he reflected, ¡°The way is long, but the provisions are small¡± (Kesubos 67b).
?
Thus, a man of wisdom will dedicate every available moment toward the service of his Creator.

TWO DAY CRASH COURSE COMING TO ISRAEL Amazon workshop This week

TWO DAY CRASH COURSE COMING TO ISRAEL Amazon workshop?
This week?
Revolutionary Parnassah Opportunity for Americans Coming to Israel

A revolutionary event for people seeking parnassah is coming to Eretz Yisroel, with the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce set to host a historic Amazon sellers workshop.

¡°Hundreds of American couples savor the opportunity to spend precious years living in Eretz Yisroel. But not everyone has the financial ability to do so,¡± said Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce Founder and CEO Duvi Honig. ¡°The Chamber is here to change that.¡±??

Over the past decade, the Chamber has been at the forefront of training American Jews in the potential of the rapidly growing Amazon selling industry, leading to unprecedented success and numerous stable income streams produced.

The Chamber is now turning its focus to Americans living in Israel, creating a historic opportunity for the English-speaking community in Eretz Yisroel.

¡°Contrary to conventional wisdom, you can run a successful American Amazon business while living in Eretz Yisroel,¡± Honig said. ¡°As a service to the Anglo-Israeli community, we are bringing the leading frum Amazon gurus from the United States to show them how.¡±

A comprehensive two-day Amazon workshop series will be held in Yerushalayim on Wednesday & Thursday, February 16th and 17th, from 11AM - 5PM.

The workshops will cover a cross-section of Amazon topics, enabling even novices to gain the know-how of starting and managing an American Amazon business from anywhere.

This workshop is ideal for both those planning to remain in Eretz Yisroel for the long term, as well as couples who plan on moving to America or Europe and would like to have solid parnassah potential in hand.

The course is open to both men and women, but slots are limited, so those wishing to attend must RSVP promptly.

As a service to the community, the Chamber is offering the course at a steeply discounted rate.

Upon completion of the course, a certificate of Amazon selling knowledge will be provided to each graduate to assist them in finding and being offered a job in the field of Amazon sales.

Day 161¨C Ignore and Rebuke

?
As in the case of loshon hora, it is forbidden to listen to rechilus spoken by one¡¯s parents, siblings or spouse. Familial closeness is not a reason to share information that promotes strife and ill will among Jews.
???????????
When subjected to gossip, one is required not only to distance himself from the conversation, but must also reprove the speaker for violating a Torah commandment. Only when rebuke will cause the gossiper to speak with greater malice should one not offer rebuke.
???????????
If one¡¯s employer or colleagues are prone to gossip, one must ignore their conversations. (One is not required to offer reproof if this might cause him to lose his job. Fulfillment of a positive commandment [such as the mitzvah to offer reproof] does not require a monetary risk of such magnitude. However, one should attempt to voice disapproval at some point so as not to be guilty of chanufah (false flattery.)
???????????
In all situations, the listener must do his best to stop the gossip ¨C perhaps by tactfully changing the subject.
?

?
SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
Daily Pursuit

?
?It is imperative that one uproot a complacent attitude toward certain mitzvos. Doing so is crucial if one is to fulfill his obligations toward his Creator and toward his fellow man.
?
¡°Hillel used to say: If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I am for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?¡¯¡¯ (Avos 1:14). If Hillel was wont to repeat this maxim, surely it must contain teachings which are fundamental to one¡¯s Divine service and purpose in life. In fact, Hillel is awakening us to approach Torah and mitzvos with alacrity and zeal, each and every day.
?
When a man is seen refraining from day-to-day involvement with earning a livelihood, the logical question is: How does he support his family? A variety of possibilities exists:
?
1) He may own a factory which is staffed by dependable workers, so that periodic involvement on his part is sufficient.
2) He may be a highly skilled professional who earns enough in a few hours of work to provide his family with their weekly needs.
3) He may be a merchant who does business only at the regional market, which is open for a few weeks at a time at regular intervals during the year.
?
In the above-cited Mishnah, Hillel teaches that with regard to Divine service none of the above-mentioned possibilities exists. Nothing less than daily pursuit of spiritual accomplishment will suffice.

?
