Discovery and Recovery
?
Said Rabbi Bunam: "Solomon counsels us (Proverbs 2:4): 'Seek her (wisdom) as silver, and search for her as for treasures.' There are two kinds of seeking. A man may look for a treasure which he has heard may be in the vicinity. Or, a man may search for something which he has lost. The first seeker does not fatigue himself in the quest, but if he does find the treasure , he is overjoyed. The second man labors diligently to find the object of his search, but when he discovers it, he experiences but little joy, since he has only regained that which he had already possessed. In seeking holy wisodm we should do both: labor diligently, as if we had lost it, and be overjoyed on attainng it, as if he had uncovered a great treasure."
