Transactions Between Jews
The Magelnitzer Rabbi was asked to explain the contradiction contained in two passages of the Talmud. One states that Jews should make their living one from the other (Berachoth 3); the second states that Jews should not need one another (Yoma 53). The rabbi replied: "The expression one from the other' means that both benefit from the transaction and therefore it is desirable. This also includes the case when the donor to charity feels the profit to his soul gained by his gift. But the expression 'one the other' means that only the receiver feels benefited, and that is undesirable."
