Public and Secret Love
Said the Besht: "Our love of God should be like the love between brother and sister, or between a mother and her child, rather than like the love between? man and wife or between lovers. The first may show their love both in private and public; whereas the latter do so in private only. We should not imitate those who say that our love of God should be demonstrated only in the synagogue or at home, but should not be shown on the street or in public places. In the Song of Songs (8:1), the author conveys the above lesson to us in the words: "O that you were like my brother, or as he that sucked the breasts of my mother! When I should find you without, I would kiss you; yea, and none would despise me.' "
