Knee Replacement Surgery 12
Dear Members I am new to this group having been diagnosed with NAION peripheral vision loss in my left eye 6 months ago. I would wecome hearing good news stories from those that have had knee replacement surgery which Iam scheduled to have 30th January. My anaesthetist (after receiving news from my ophthalmologist) of my condition is not willing to assist in the procedure even though under spinal epidural the risk of further vision loss was too high. Iam apprehensive about NAION occuring in the unaffected eye. I am a healthy 65 yo woman. No diabetes or BP.

Question about the shingles vaccine 6
Hi everyone, Thank you all so much for all of your support and information on this wonderful group! I have a question about the experiences people have had with the shingles vaccine and with any other vaccines. It is so hard to decide what to do about that! Any thoughts and information about your experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Amanda

James Nestor's book on improved breathing 5
With sleep apnea often being a precursor to NAION, the information provided in James Nestor's Breath could possibly naturally improve all our breathing and reduce some of our anxiety worrying if we will suffer another loss of vision. The reported benefits of improved breathing are astounding and so encouraging! It's also a very easy, informative, and entertaining read. Diane Keasler Life is the school, love is the lesson.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý in Pickleball
I've been playing Pickleball for 9 years, intermediate skills. My rally is still fine, but since my left eye NAION, I can no longer serve to save my life! I know it is a brain connection, but it is baffling to me. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thank you kindly, Lake

NAION v eye stroke video 2
I found this YouTube video called ¡°Understanding NAION vs. Eye Stroke: Key Differences, Similarities & Integrative Treatment Options¡± https://youtu.be/zrS16sBFKjw?si=XcETdEo-ZHtNQiSI Description: In this video, we break down the similarities and differences between Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION) and eye stroke (Retinal Artery Occlusion)¡ªtwo serious ischemic conditions impacting vision. Both conditions involve restricted blood flow, sudden vision loss, and share common risk factors, but differ in anatomical location, affected structures, and prognosis. I personally am seeing an Acupuncturist for my ankle tendon and it has helped me enormously. So while I am at my Acupuncturist my doctor treats my eyes and I feel like it is helping me prevent getting NAION in my second eye. Anyway I wish I had tried it when I had my first event but I was too scared that I might injure my eye further but seeing how noninvasive it is I am happy I am doing it now. Best wishes for clearer vision, Debra B

When did you know you had a disc-at-risk? 7
Hey folks, this may have been discussed previously, but I am curious as to when each of you discovered you had a disc-at-risk. After my attack, I asked my optometrist, if surgeon would have discovered it during cataract surgery, and my optom said he already knew about it. The more I think about the fact that he had had this information about my eye for some time and didn't share it with me, bothers me, and I feel like that is something all optometrists should let their patients in on. That way, if we have any of the possible contributing factors, we would be more apt to act on them.

NAION v eye stroke
I was told by my NO and my NP that some drs. would refer to my NAION as an eye stroke, but it is not considered to be one. That has come to pass. I am having a difficult time finding info that states why it is not?? If the optic nerve is without blood/oxygen for a devastating amount of time and ceases to fully function, how is that not a stroke? Thanks so much for ALL imput.

Night Driving Aides 6
Hey guys, has anyone had any luck with anti-glare glasses for night driving? If so, what brand do you use?¡ I¡¯ve got astigmatism and since the unilateral NAION event the bursts in the lights are much worse. My new contacts allow for crisper sight during the day but it made bursting worse at night. I don¡¯t make a habit of driving at night but with the time changes on the east coast it¡¯s pretty inevitable after work now¡. Thanks!

two subjects with question 4
Greetings: I am new to the group so if my message is old business, I apologize. There are two subjects I would like o present to the group: 1, Changes in accuity 2.Getting eyeglasses But first, a brief profile... I am a 74 year old white male. Diagnosed with NAION spring of 2017. Started with dark spot in left eye vision but got worse in December of 2017. Current condition is 5% vision in right eye and 40% vision in left eye. I have poor peripheral vision, cannot see most colors unless very bright (like lime green or lemon yellow) and what I do see is like looking through frosted or opaque glass. Sound familiar? 1. CHANGES IN ACCUITY: Since I was diagnosed, there have been two times I detected a degrading of my sight picture. The first was in October of 2023 after receiving multiple vaccines on the same day. I had severe fatigue after the vaccines and two days later I detected worse vision. The second incident was after day surgery in April of 2024. The surgery required general anesthesia but all went well except the next day I detected yet additional, worse vision. My worse vision can be described as inability to see detail. The three ophthalmologists I have consulted about this have no explanation. HAS ANYONE IN THE GROUP EXPERIENCED THIS? Please know, for brevity this description leaves out a lot of detail. 2. GETTING EYEGLASSES: I think I need a new eyeglass prescription but the optometrist seems to have a hard time figuring out the best prescription. I realize my NAION does not help the situation but is there anything that can/should be done to help me see more clearly? That is, without blurred reading vision? By-the-way, I realize my disease affects the back of the eye while glasses improve the front of the eye. I hope for a productive conversation with any and all who can enlighten me on theses two topics. Thank you. BGF in Moses Lake, Washington

supplements. and medicines 8
I experenced NAION in my right eye a little over 2 years ago if you drew a line from 10.30 o 4.30 om a clock the left portion is what was affected. I am doing everything I can to keep it from ever happening again. But I find solid information on this disease to be scarce. And Optical Neruologisis are few and far between in Georgia, There there are none in Macon. Like the list of possibilities of causes seems endless. And followed with not much is known about the causes. Like the active ingredient in Viagra. Many clain it is a caues NAION yet other articals say there is not enough data to prove it. Or like medicines. I use Metronidazole Gel, 1%. for rosacea, I read where Metronidazole is a cause of NAION. But is it refering to the gel 1% or the pill? Or like Nitric Oxside, a suppliment thay claim promotes circulation . It relaxes blood vessels . It can cause NAION yet L Arginine that I thought did the same thing is given a big humbs up. Or if you have surgery am I suppose to have it with out anesthesia? Or a filling at the dentist. I guess if you have ED you are just out of luck. Where do you go when you have a question like these. The optomoligists Ive talked to seem to know about as much as I do. Which aint alot.

Nine years since my NAION event 10
In 2015, happened during MEGA-INTENSE work projects. Left eye, suddenly went 30% dark. My N.O.: "you are lucky, it was not worse." (Dang) "Danger zone" for 2nd attack, research indicates 5 years. So, I'm (probably) OK. Now semi-retired, work at being "calm." (Michael Sealey recordings) Still concerned about cataract surgery. Have a hard decision to make, in next year -- surgery or not.

They Said Her NAION Vision Loss Was Hopeless... Until She Took a "Leap of Faith" 2
Is there any validity to this at all? The two hardest tests on the spiritual road are the patience to wait for the right moment and the courage not to be disappointed with what we encounter----Paulo Coelho I would be true, for there are those who trust me: I would be pure, for there are those who care; I would be strong, for there is much to suffer; I would be brave, for there is much to dare-Howard Walter ---------- Original Message ---------- From: EHI <hello@...> To: campano21@... Cataract surgery caution 6
These are the last two paragraphs from the following link. It may be that a causal relationship be?tween uncomplicated cataract surgery and optic neuropathy will not be con?clusively established in the literature, said Dr. Bhatti. However, the experts said, there¡¯s enough evidence to justify proceeding with caution as well as to support counseling prospective patients with a history of optic neuropathy who are electing to undergo cataract surgery in the fellow eye. As Dr. Bhatti noted, ¡°Thankfully, optic neuropathy following cataract surgery is relatively uncommon¡ªagain, [the incidence is] in that 1 in 1,000 to 3,000 range. But if patients have previ?ously experienced either garden-variety spontaneous NAION or PCSON in one eye and they¡¯re considering cataract surgery in the other, it¡¯s important for the surgeon to provide full disclosure and counsel them on the possible in?crease of risk in that fellow eye.¡±https://www.aao.org/eyenet/article/update-on-optic-neuropathy-after-cataract-surgery Diane Keasler Life is the school, love is the lesson.

ABOUT N.A.I.O.N. AND CATARACTS 2
ABOUT N.A.I.O.N. AND CATARACTS Many NAION patients are older. Cataracts are an issue for older persons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cataract. Given questions whether cataract surgery (CS) can cause another NAION event, caution about CS is strongly advised. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cataract_surgery) OF CONCERN TODAY .. CS can be delayed .. ONLY SO LONG. That is: the longer a patient waits .. the bigger the issue of INOPERABLE cataracts becomes. Over time, a cataract will become thicker, to the point, it cannot be removed safely. A very complex matter. It is risky, so only the patient can make the final decision. Said patient, being well-informed of benefits and risks involved. ¡ª- There is much debate, about how NAION patients should respond to their (ultimate) time with cataracts. Many concerns that cataract surgery ¡ª https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cataract_surgery can trigger another NAION event. My NAION M.D., a national NAION expert and USAF M.D. for Vietnam POWs who is now retired .. recommended that I wait until ¡°the absolute last minute¡± to have cataract surgery. That is, when it causes problems, in daily life.

Anxiety 38
As I have said I had my original NAION in 2020 which was only a dot and healed over time. But I had the second NAION in my left eye in January this year. At first it was a dot like the other one but the next night while sleeping it took over the entire eye. My vision was 20/400. It¡¯s is now 6 months later and vision is 20/125. The doctor has told me only a 5% chance it will occur in my right eye again. However every time I wake up at night I am panicked that I won¡¯t see. I take my blood pressure and I am on bp medication. I sleep on my back in fear of pressing my cheeks onto my eye. I have had temporal arterectomies on both sides. I have had brain mri carotid ultrasounds and sleep studies. But the fear is real. It seemed ok for awhile but recently started the anxiety again. Any suggestions? Also has anyone ever healed completely that had more than a dot? Anything that helps this condition? Anything that hurts it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! -- Enjoy every moment, Diane
