Ischemic optic neuropathy

Lisa, I have none of the "usual" factors..no sleep apnea, no low blood pressure, no high cholesterol,? no hypertension, no anemia, no high blood pressure for which I take meds, no surgery, no Covid Vax, nothing...I was overweight by about 70 lbs for awhile, but at the time I was diagnosed at 58 I had just lost a bunch of weight (without any crazy meds or fad dieting).? Mine is only in one eye, and its like looking through tissue paper...pretty consistent since it happened 3 years ago...no change in vision.? Doc says my other eye has a "disk at risk," which I understand to mean my disk is a small space which increases the chances that if blood flow to that optic nerve is stopped, for whatever reason, and there is swelling it could happen again.

I hope sharing my story helps you somehow...all the best,?

Bobbie

No, I have high BP and no anemia. My sleep study didn¡¯t mandate a cpap but I¡¯m on one anyway due to the suggestion of my NO. ?My cholesterol levels have always been below the suggested levels and I¡¯ve never taken the little blue pill (which are considered to possibly be a factor).?

Untreated high BP coupled with an undiagnosed moderate sleep apnea condition. Going on 16 years now
without any further NAION recurrence.

I now take BP meds with100% compliance using a CPAP machine. No other causal factors
were found back in 2007 after a total NAION loss in my right eye. I am light skinned with western
European background and that also did not help.

I think the main common thing with most of us the bundled veins and small disk. I also was in good health, but over weight. I lost 45 pounds and walk 5 miles every morning. My attack was in my left eye in 2005. I take 2000 mg omega 3 fish oil and a low dose aspirin everyday. This has worked for me, I continue to do most everything I always did. I have no central vision in my left eye, but 20/20 in my right eye.

Hi?
As I mentioned in another thread I have a big blood pressure drop after eating and apparently one in three older people like me experience it. It's called postprandial hypotension
.

My doctor wasn't really familiar with it. My blood pressure when I visited my doctor previously was almost perfect so he had no reason to suspect I had blood pressure problems. Instead of eating 3 meals a day, I now have 6 smaller meals.

No sleep apnea or anemia for me.? Mine occurred due to taking BP meds at night per perscription.? The two together dropped me too low during the night plus I was working 16 HR days and under alot of stress.? Wasn't getting much sleep but enough to where this happened during that time.

For those of you who are newer members this was on our forum last September:? After your vision stabilizes (6 months to a year) you might benefit from something called Prismatic Lenses. Go to our group website and search for message #646. Here is the link:
/g/NAION/message/646
?? These lenses are custom made to move the forward view to your best vision area (which might now be to one side).

My story is a little different but I feel compelled to chime in. I had a NAION attack in November.? It left my right eye almost blind.? I was severely depressed but my wife kept hope.? She sought out alternative treatments for me.? The main reason being is that she also had a condition and the medical community didn't help so she sought out a supplement regiment and it cured a condition that she had.? To be completely honest, when I saw her go through her struggles and slowly cure herself I was still not convinced that the supplements and alternative medicines was the reason why.? I still did not give the treatment any credit and out of my own ignorance I wrote it off as time and the body healing itself.

Back to my situation.? Out of desperation I chose alternative medicine as?a path that I was?willing to take.? I was looking to?do?things differently even if I did not 100% believe in?what I was doing.? I also went ALL IN.? So I started with the UPMC alternative treatment department and they put me in touch with an acupuncture specialist, Tricia Smith M.S, LAc.? She studied my condition and came up with an acupuncture treatment.? In addition, I scheduled with another acupuncturist, Mara Carlini MSAOM, LAc.? I gave her a copy of the web article that I attached below and she developed her own regiment for me based on the readings.

Within 2 week's time I started to notice something was changing.? I thought it was a placebo effect.? I was in disbelief.? The 3rd week I had a follow up appointment with a Neuro Opthamologist.? I told him that my condition seemed to improve.? He seemed immediately skeptical but chose to do a thorough exam.? He looked at the optic nerve and noticed that the swelling was gone but that was expected to happen.? I was given multiple eye tests and my vision returned,? I am back to 20/20 corrected with my glasses.? I do notice a very small amount of blurriness but it is minimal.?

My heart goes out to those of you who are struggling with this.? I wanted to share my story and hope maybe this path could help someone else.? I did react very early in the process and the Doctors are saying that may have helped the cause.??

Best of Luck,

-Joe

Good post Chiarina. Couldn¡¯t agree more with your post. Find most days you get some form of frustration from the lack of vision. As to what caused it not a clue I had never been fitter than I was when I had my first episode at 57. Driving wise much the same as you I only drive in day light and only places I¡¯m familiar with. This is allowed with an annual eye test from the British drivers licensing centre

Thanks Joe, it may be too late for my right eye as I'm right eye effected since 9/22. However, I am also disc at risk in my left eye so I'm going to speak with an acupuncturist that I know about this. I'm interested in any hope.

Hi Paul.? Did you have scans and blood tests to see what may have caused it?? Mine all came back clear so the only thing they put it down to was untreated Sleep Apnea.? Have you had a test for Sleep Apnea?? I was 59 when this happened to me.? My doctor told me that it was a very common age range to be getting this type of thing.? Some days are better than others vision wise.? Its very frustrating.? Like you, I only drive locally.? Take care.? Its a shock when it happens and it took me a while to come to terms with it.??

How long between your NAION onset and using the CPAP? I had NAION diagnosed a month ago, did all the test and scans. Now waiting for a sleep study which is still 6 weeks away. Just very apprehensive that I will get another attack for untreated sleep apnea.

Do you have sleep apnea too? What happened after the weight loss? Is your sleep apnea cured?

Did you start CPAP after that? How long it takes for you to get the CPAP?
