When did you know you had a disc-at-risk?
Hey folks, this may have been discussed previously, but I am curious as to when each of you discovered you had a disc-at-risk. After my attack, I asked my optometrist,?if surgeon?would have discovered it during cataract surgery, and my optom said he already knew about it.? The more I think about the fact that he had had this information about my eye for some time and didn't share it with me, bothers me, and I feel like that is something all optometrists should let their patients in on.? That way, if we have any of the possible contributing factors, we would be more apt to act on them. |
Re: Night Driving Aides
Yes. Before my doctor told me I can’t drive, I would never drive at night. Are you affected in both eyes?? On Sat, 9 Nov 2024 at 11:23?AM, Eibhlin Fionn via <ourmissbrooks=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: Night Driving Aides
Phil: Night Vision pro makes yellow tinted glasses that are claimed to be effective at night and are guaranteed to work or your money back within 90 days. I have a yellow tinted pair that my late spouse bought me at the time of my loss in 2007. I never use them and I don't think they are from this same company I cited above. I try to avoid night driving especially after the time change in the fall in New England. Good luck. Eileen |

If so, what brand do you use?… I’ve got astigmatism and since the unilateral NAION event the bursts in the lights are much worse. My new contacts allow for crisper sight during the day but it made bursting worse at night. I don’t make a habit of driving at night but with the time changes on the east coast it’s pretty inevitable after work now…. Thanks! |
Re: Night Driving Aides
Mine are pretty good...I'll check on the brand and get back to you. On Fri, Nov 8, 2024, 6:58?PM Phil Moskowitz via <Pjmoskowitz=[email protected]> wrote:

Thanks for the advice about going to UW Medicine. The first NO to see me was Dr. Eugene May from UW and I have seen him more than once. However, going to Seattle from Moses will be attempted only because of dire circumstances.

Ruby...Did you get my reply to your message? Since I am new to this group and its features, I am not sure I answered you. Please let me know if I was successful. Thanks.

But first, a brief profile...
I am a 74 year old white male. Diagnosed with NAION spring of 2017. Started with dark spot in left eye vision but got worse in December of 2017. Current condition is 5% vision in right eye and 40% vision in left eye. I have poor peripheral vision, cannot see most colors unless very bright (like lime green or lemon yellow) and what I do see is like looking through frosted or opaque glass. Sound familiar?
?
1. CHANGES IN ACCUITY: Since I was diagnosed, there have been two times I detected a degrading of my sight picture. The first was in October of 2023 after receiving multiple vaccines on the same day. I had severe fatigue after the vaccines and two days later I detected worse vision. The second incident was after day surgery in April of 2024. The surgery? required general anesthesia but all went well except the next day I detected yet additional, worse vision. My worse vision can be described as inability to see detail. The three ophthalmologists I have consulted about this have no explanation. HAS ANYONE IN THE GROUP EXPERIENCED THIS? Please know, for brevity this description leaves out a lot of detail.
?
2. GETTING EYEGLASSES: I think I need a new eyeglass prescription but the optometrist seems to have a hard time figuring out the best prescription. I realize my NAION does not help the situation but is there anything that can/should be done to help me see more clearly? That is, without blurred reading vision? By-the-way, I realize my disease affects the back of the eye while glasses improve the front of the eye.
?
I hope for a productive conversation with any and all who can enlighten me on theses two topics. Thank you.

Re: two subjects with question
Hey Bruce! I just had to respond to tell you I am so sorry you are one of us...What vaccines did you receive?? I am a 71 year old white female.? I had a NAION event in August of 2022.? It was a time of being way too busy.? It was pretty textbook, in that the bottom half of my left eye was that of frosted glass.? mine happened during the day.? ?I do believe main factor was stress. Despite steroids, etc, I did not have any improvement.? The following February, I decided to have the Shingles vax.? I had the ok from my rheumy, NO and NP.? Within 2 hours, I felt like I had the flu.? Within a few days, I had lost more vision.? My NO, Rheumy, and NP all believe it was the vax.? There is a small section of my left eye that is clear around 10:00.? The rest is cloudy.? I was told not to get any more vaccines until I saw an endo.? Haven't done that yet.? Had a knee replacement earlier this year.? Did not use general anesthesia.? All went well.? I do so hope you are able to find something and someone to help you with glasses.? My right eye is still good.? I had cataract surgery in 2020.? It is scary to think about, so most of the time I just try not to...I just try to eliminate as much stress from my life as I can... Like you, I'm scheduled for cataract surgery (mid-November) in my only functioning eye.? The surgeon and I have discussed this extensively and I'm comfortable that the risk is minimal.? He tells me that if anything goes wrong, he can call in a retinaolgist?to control any damage, but he does not believe this will be necessary.? Go for it!!! 开云体育Has anyone on here experienced cataract surgery having only one of your eyes that’s what I am having to make a choice to do. I don’t know how long I can go safely with the cataracts but right now I’m a little scared to go in and have it done. Is anyone have cataracts? I’m scheduled for Thursday really thinking about canceling but I don’t know what to do everyone tells me how safe it is, but I understand there’s always things that can go wrong. I don’t know if it’s worth the gamble or not but that’s what I’m facing. On Oct 13, 2024, at 10:21?PM, James Chevalley <jimchevalley@...> wrote:

I used to take aspirin as well but I had to stop because of my gout.

Hi James,
I have exactly the same issue-to deal with cholesterol and high triglycerides (my only risk factor), I take fish oil supplements (5000mg twice a day), flax seed oil (1000mg twice a day), krill oil (500mg twice a day) and guggulipid (1 gram/day). ?They reduce blood viscosity and should reduce the chances of an attack in my good eye.
Hop this helps,
Paul

supplements. and medicines
I experenced NAION in my right eye a little over 2 years ago if you drew a line from 10.30 o 4.30 om a clock the left portion is what was affected.? I am doing everything I can to keep it from ever happening again.
But I find solid information on this disease to be scarce. And Optical Neruologisis are few and far between in Georgia, There there are none in Macon. Like the list of possibilities of causes seems endless. And followed with not much is known about the causes.? Like the active ingredient in Viagra. Many clain it is a caues NAION yet other articals say there is not enough data to prove it.? Or like medicines. I use? Metronidazole Gel, 1%. for rosacea,? I read where Metronidazole is a cause of NAION. But is it refering to the gel 1% or the pill?? Or like Nitric Oxside, a suppliment thay claim promotes circulation . It relaxes blood vessels . It can cause NAION yet L Arginine that I thought did the same thing is given a big humbs up.? Or if? you have surgery am I suppose to have it with out anesthesia? Or a filling at the dentist. I guess if you have ED? you are just out of luck.? Where do you go when you have a question like these.? The optomoligists Ive talked to seem to know about as much as I do. Which aint alot.?

Re: Nine years since my NAION event
Hi Chuu. I was under an ophthalmologist for 5 years. Was never given a reason for either attack. In my own opinion I’m going with the crowded disc theory. As for changes to life style after first attack the only ones I made were the ones that were forced on me. Like you I’m coming up to 9 years so fingers crossed it doesn’t happen again. I understand once space has been cleared in the optic nerve it shouldn’t happen again
