From the NAFA Board

Kim Davis

The NAFA Board of Directors held a teleconference on Sunday, June 7, 2020 to discuss the feasibility of hosting our premier event, the CanAm Classic on October 9-11, 2020 in Indianapolis, IN.
After much consideration and discussion on how to safely and responsibly hold the event in the best interest of all participants in light of current COVID-19 restrictions, the Board voted unanimously to cancel CanAm 2020.
The invaluable feedback provided by club owners and the NAFA community via the poll indicated that the majority of respondents would not attend CanAm 2020. Aside from the current limitations on public gatherings, the Board discussed the various issues raised by participants ranging from crossing State and International borders, as well as the current physical condition of dogs who have seen limited racing this year.
The safety of our community and of our dogs will always be at the forefront of our decisions. We will miss connecting with friends old and new, and the excitement that CanAm brings every year. May you stay safe and healthy as we look forward to CanAm 2021.
Steve Corona
NAFA Chairman of the Board

Board Meeting Highlights

I hope all our flyball family and their extended families are doing well during these uncertain times. We all certainly miss racing and seeing everyone. Yesterday the board meeting had a board meeting, done entirely over video conference. Below are the highlights from the call.

TOURNAMENTS CANCELLED THROUGH JULY 31, 2020
All NAFA tournaments will be cancelled through July 31, 2020. We have been closely monitoring the
situation in each state and province, and many locations are beginning to ease restrictions - earlier than
projections had suggested. In light of that information, the board felt it prudent to take a holding
pattern and see the impact after 3 weeks of restrictions being lifted. While this may undoubtedly be
disappointing to some, we felt it best to have a more cautious approach as opposed to potentially
opening up too early. The board will review the situation and will provide an update in early June for
tournaments from August 1 onwards.

CANAM CLASSIC
A decision regarding holding CanAm will be made in June.
The board will be seeking input from Club Owners regarding their team¡¯s participation in CanAm.
The CanAm T-shirt design contest is on hold until a determination regarding holding the event is made.

BOX SIZE CHANGE
To encourage innovation in box design as our sport evolves, NAFA is relaxing box dimension restrictions
as of October 1, 2020.
The new maximum dimensions will be: 36¡± wide x 24¡± high x 36¡± deep.
Boxes shall not exceed 36 inches in width, nor 24 inches in height from the bottom surface of the box
excluding mat grabbing devices/materials and outdoor staking devices. The body of the box shall not
exceed 36 inches in depth. The base that the boxloader stands on may exceed 36 inches.

AWARDS IMPACTED BY COVID-19
IRON DOG: The board has decided to waive the ¡®point earned¡¯ requirement in FY2020 (October 1, 2019 ¨C
September 30, 2020) for the Iron Dog award. Dogs eligible to run in FY 2020 will be given credit for
fulfilling the one point earned requirement in FY2020.
We have an unprecedented situation this year with many tournaments being cancelled. As a result,
there are many clubs that have not and will not have the opportunity to participate in enough
tournaments to meet the minimum requirements for the overall NAFA Awards. The board felt that
parity was important when it came to these awards and therefore has come to the difficult decision that
there will be no NAFA Champion, Regional Champion or Regional Overall Club Champion awards in
FY2020. We will still go forward with awards for Regional MVP, Judge of the Year and Clyde Memorial
Hall of Fame.

JUDGES AND JUDGES IN TRAINING
The Board has decided to waive the minimum judging requirements for Approved and Supervising
Judges for FY2020.
In addition, Apprentice, and Provisional Judges, have been given an extension of 12 months to complete
their minimum assignments.
The Judges Committee plans to host a judge¡¯s video chat in the near future to touch base with our
officials. One of the topics will be to seek input regarding a continuing education program for all active
judges.

JUNIOR HANDLER PIN CONTEST
The design contest for the Junior Handler Pin will be announced shortly and published on the NAFA website, NAFA News, and social media pages.

Full minutes of the meeting will be posted when available.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

Sincerely,

Neil Flood
North American Flyball Association, Executive Director

Update on NAFA for June Events

All,

I hope everyone in our flyball family is doing as well as could be expected in these difficult times. First, I hope you and your families are healthy, and I also hope you are able to navigate these difficult economic environments as well. As promised, I wanted to provide our hosts and competitors as much notice as possible for the month of June. So far, most of the data has shown very positive results with respect to social distancing and shutting down of non-essential services. However, most of the professional projections and models presented have shown that we will not be out the woods through June and we want our competitors to be as safe as possible. Therefore we will extend NAFAs suspension of events through the end of June, 2020.? I know this may be disappointing for many of us, however our competitors safety is our top priority.?

Also, as a reminder, the Board will be meeting on the weekend of May 2nd. One of the topics of discussion will be bringing flyball back from this pandemic. If you have comments, thoughts or suggestions, don¡¯t hesitate to email me.?

Sincerely,?

Neil Flood

North American Flyball Association, Executive Director

Upcoming NAFA Events

All,

First, and foremost, I hope all our flyball members and their families are safe and healthy during the challenges presented by the the COVID-19 pandemic. These are certainly trying times for everyone, and we¡¯ve continued to monitor the health recommendations by the CDC, Health Canada, as well as guidance provided by leading infectious diseases medical experts. While we would all prefer to be out playing flyball in a safe and healthy manner, our first priority is the health and welfare of our members and the communities that we all live in. Currently we¡¯ve suspended events through the end of April, and I would like to provide an update for future months, as I want to provide our host clubs and participants as much lead time for planning as possible. Based on the current projections for increases in COVID-19 cases, NAFA will be suspending flyball events through the end of May, 2020. At this point I? won¡¯t be making a commitment for the month of June, as information is changing so rapidly and it¡¯s incredibly hard to predict that landscape at this time. However I do not feel confident we will be able to have flyball available at that time. We will look to provide an update on June by a mid-April timeframe.

As always, don¡¯t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions. I hope everyone remains safe, and I look forward to the time when we can all meet in the lanes.

Sincerely,

Neil Flood

North American Flyball Association, Executive Director

Update: COVIDI19 Impact on NAFA Events

Information and guidance on the COVID19 Pandemic continues to evolve, and we continue to monitor and asses the situation as it pertains to our organization. Our primary goal is the health and safety of our membership. Recent updates from the CDC is advising against gatherings of 50 or more people for the next 8 weeks. Due to the average attendance at our events, and the diverse nature of our participants, we feel it prudent to align with their recommendation, and all NAFA events will be cancelled through April 26th, 2020. Thus far many of our venues have been very understanding and returned deposits to the clubs. If you club is having a problem, please reach out to us for anything we can assist with. We will continue to provide updates as necessary as the situation and governmental guidance is constantly evolving. Please take care,

Neil Flood

North American Flyball Association, Executive Director

NAFA Events Suspended

All,

With information on the COVID19 virus being updated daily, and considering new and important information from Health Services Departments in the Provinces and States that we play in, I¡¯ve made the decision to cancel NAFA events for at least the next two weeks. There will be no NAFA flyball through 3/23. Events schedule the weekend of 3/27 are still under the discretion of the host club, and NAFA continues to monitor the situation based on the last information we have available to us. To the best of my knowledge teams and members that are traveling to events this weekend have already been notified. The situation is constantly changing and we will continue to monitor the information as we make decisions on future events.?

Our primary concern is for the health and well being of our members, and I don¡¯t feel we have enough information to make the decision that gathering to race will be a safe experience for everyone involved.?

NAFA will work with host clubs on financial burdens imposed upon them with respect to potential lost rental fees and/or deposits. As necessary we will assist in working with facilities on those fees. We are a really a small but tight community and as much as possible I would like to encourage everyone to help share the burden placed up on the host clubs that had their events cancelled. Through no fault of their own they bear more of the brunt of this, and I would encourage us to each assist in bearing that burden so we can continue to move forward as a group. Remember these clubs may not simply be out rental money, but for many hosting a tournament was a means to raise funds so they could play flyball throughout the year. There is a wide array of ways to help, among them donating raffle items, or offering clubs reduced entries at future events.?

Again, I apologize for any undue burden or inconvenience this places on any club or team. I hope everyone remains safe.

If you have any questions, as always, please feel free to contact me.?

COVID-19

Last night the NAFA Executive Committee?held?a teleconference to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic and how it impacts our sport.? The number one priority is the?health,?safety and well-being of our competitors.??NAFA would therefore like to provide some recommendations to Tournament Participants, Tournament Hosts and Regional Directors?in light of?this outbreak.?

?

Tournament Participants?

  1. If you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 within?a 14-day period and/or you are?showing signs and symptoms and/or have tested positive for COVID-19,?do not attend a tournament.??
  2. Be sure to wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizers?
  3. Avoid?unnecessary?contact?with others?and avoid touching your face
  4. If you need to pull a team from a tournament due to health reasons communicate that as quickly as possible to the Tournament Hosts so they can make appropriate decisions about the event?
  5. After the event if any attendee develops signs and symptoms and/or receives a positive diagnosis for COVID-19 within 14 days of the tournament inform the Tournament Director and the Regional Director immediately.?
  6. It is recommended that anyone who has?come in contact with?someone who developed signs and symptoms and/or tested positive for COVID-19?should?minimally self-quarantines for a 14-day period?or as otherwise instructed by your health provider?

Tournament Hosts?and Regional Directors?

  1. Be aware of where to find information?from?your local health authorities and share updates to those planning to attend the tournament before and up to the tournament date?
  2. Ensure you are aware of and understand the cancelation policies in the rental contract for the tournament venue
  3. Only individuals participating in tournaments should attend. Consider not inviting the general public?to your events?
  4. Make soap and hand sanitizer available to participants?
  5. Recognize that teams may make last minute decisions to not attend a tournament due to health reasons.? This may require last minute changes to teams and/or the schedule.? The Performance Team rules can be utilized for Regular and Multibreed teams and consider allowing 2 partial Open teams to combine allowing those in attendance to still participate.? The Performance Rules may be relaxed a bit during this time (e.g., on day 2 of a tournament someone feels ill and leaves the tournament NAFA would allow that team to go Performance even though it is mid-tournament).? Contact Neil Flood and/or Steve Corona with any specific questions before or during a tournament.?
  6. A reminder that NAFA fees are not required for teams that withdraw from the tournament completely?and therefore no scoring is required.? NAFA recommends at least returning the NAFA?fee portion of the entry fee to those teams.? Decisions to return the full entry fee and/or allow that team to use it for a future event are up to the host club.?
  7. If a host club or the Regional Director becomes aware of someone at a tournament that became ill and/or tested positive for COVID-19 within 14 days of the event, immediately communicate that information to all attendees of the?tournament.?

Again, we want to reiterate that the health and well-being of everyone is paramount.??Information surrounding COVID-19 is continually evolving.? Please be sure to check for updated information through your national and local authorities as well as the World Health Organization website at?.?

If there are any questions, please contact Neil Flood?nflood51@...?and/or Steve Corona?flyballguy@....?

?

Thank you, and please be safe.
