Contest software #aclog #codes #contest

I noticed that there has been plenty of software created for contests; however, I also noticed that there are plenty of contests without a contest software. I also understand the difficulties of programming a software. But I was wondering if there's a way for a generic contesting software, where the user can put in the necessary exchange for the contest that your users (me) can use for the specific contest?

If exchanges are similar I use other contest software that use the same exchange. And edit the cabrillo after.???? Which contest do you not see

Some of these may not be big enough for the software providers to create special programs for them.? You may want to check with the organizers to see if there are any programs that do support them.? Depending on their rules and exchange , they may be similar to another contest that you could use instead.? The only downside is this may require some editing of the cabrillo file after it's been created and you may not have accurate scoring and mults, depending on how close their contest is to others.? I imagine the Ontario QSO party would be similar to other QSO Parties, but some allow FT8 and some allow it on the WARC bands with a standard exchange, so you never know.

Anyone who has read Scott’s dissertation on writing contest logging programs has a pretty fair idea of what it takes.? And why Scott doesn’t support a bunch of the smaller QRP contests as well.

THOUGHT – and this is a dangerous thing……..

Has anyone considered that you can CONFIGURE AC-Log to handle the contest exchange of your favorite unsupported contest.? Build a screen that has the entry data you need, set the TAB order to enter the exchange quickly…… and done.? If you need a CABRILLO file, there are other programs out there that can convert an ADIF to a CAB.

The SMIRK contest is a great example.? Scott’s ARRL VHF contest software comes close….. until you get a contact with a SMIRK number you need to record.? I would not think of begging Scott to support that contest – not popular enough.? If Scott’s VHF program had one extra field that was just for a “NOTE” the SMIRK number could go in the note.? But it does not.? And the contest just isn’t popular enough for Scott to waste time on.? It is only important to a small number of 6m-ops.

It is what it is.? What Scott gets done is amazing!? It is was easy, everyone could write their own programs.

Download and learn how to use N1MM.? It covers just about everything.? It really is your best option.

Chris? NU1O

N1MM's power is in the User Defined Contests ("UDC"), but creating and maintaing those is not a simple task that anyone can do.? If the owner of the SMIRK UDC gets tired of the contest, or simply moves on from ham radio, you may be left with an outdated and orphaned contest file.
?
I've used both and I've used both in a networked environment.? I find N3FJP's networking (TCP version) to be easier to get up and running than N1MM's networking.? N1MM is a "swiss army knife" of contesting, where N3FJP is a hammer.? A hammer is easier to use and simplier to setup.? A swiss army knife can do more things, but is more complex to operate.? N1MM has very frequent updates (more so than winlink it seems at times) where as N3FJP is maintenance free.
?
I like both.? I prefer N3FJP's software.? The general radio club I belong to uses it for their field day... and they were a 22A this past year and still the largest in the country (by a long shot) and had the most points as well.? Three of the top five largest Field Day setups last year were in my county.? One uses N3FJP, one migrated to N1MM from paper logs last year, and I don't know about the others.
?
Just my two cents, YMMV.

I’ve never used N1NM but I am a member of a well known high power contest club [ I am not one of the high power ops : ) ]. ? I am guessing 95% of them use it. ? I am on the club email reflector.? What I have noticed is that a lot of these guys spend a CRAZY amount of time maintaining it, trying to figure out how to get it to do what they need it to do, being frustrated, crying out for help, etc. ? When I read the troubleshooting emails, I have no idea what they are talking about.? The conclusion I came to is that it’s not for the faint of heart and it’s pretty helpful to have above average IT skills if you use it. ?

I wanted something that was easy to use for every day operating and handled the contests well that I participate in.? Basically turn key. ?

I resisted computer logging for years because I wanted to be a radio operator and not a frustrated aggravated amateur IT/computer guy. ??

N3FJP perfectly fits what I do.? Wish I had started with it sooner.?

EXACTLY!

I too gave N1MM a try.? Could I get it to work?? Probably.? Well, maybe!? Do I want another career based around figuring out a logging program?? NOPE!? No way !!!

SCOTT……. Thank you for AC-Log and all the other stuff you do.? It doesn’t take a doctorate in software to use your programs…….

Now if I could only get you to see the utility of adding a RECALL button to the menu that opens when you click a line in the main form.? Recall works great if you are duplicating one station.? But some of us SOTA/POTA guys work 3 (or more) calls on one band, then switch bands and hit the same 3 again.? It would be SWEET if I could click on a line, then click RECALL and it filled in all the park number-name-grid from the contact 5 minutes and 1 band ago.

If it wasn’t for AC-Log I might still be using a LOG-BOOK !!!? Ewww – PAPER!

That is priceless. And true. My own thought is that a Swiss Army knife is like a generalist who can to a lot of different tasks, none of them very well. Now that I have irritated MM users..... :)

My own story is from when I was involved in a club FD operation for several years with N3FJP FD networked loggers (license donated by moi) and almost everyone loved it. At one point new management came in and said that we will be using N1MM for FD because FJP can't do X Y and Z. After I fully documented that FJP *does* do X Y and Z and was met with crickets in response they showed up at FD with their MM-ed PCs and I showed up with my FJP. Of curse they grumbled but I was in charge of the 20m anchor station so they couldn't kick me out. I had FJP up and running in mere minutes and was making contacts while the other guys were messing around with MM trying to get it to work for close to an hour.

Fast forward to next the year, it was made clear that I had to use MM. So I gave it a try. And was off into the weeds almost immediately. Had to figure out on the fly how to keep 20 fone running while at the same time going back to correct the entry errors that had been created. Not a great experience. I told them that if they used N1MM next year I would not participate. They did and I retired from FD after my long run.

The club has since returned to FJP software and requested my return but I remain "retired" for other unrelated reasons.
