I take the 'Name' field to be the name/nickname the other operator gave. In my not so many foreign contacts, operators have often used a nickname instead of their formal first name. The name often given by US operators is not what you'll see in the QRZ lookup. "Matt" instead of "Mathew," for example.
This makes the contact more personal, if you will. I like the behavior, which I have seen since before the most recent release.
