Field Day Network Tips

Hi All,
?
Happy Fathers Day!
?
Since we are getting swamped with the typical pre Field Day questions, I thought I would? send along the most common helpful tips.? Hopefully, you have already tested out all your PCs and network.? With the additional security in later Windows operating systems, it is more important than ever to make sure that you have your drives / directories properly shared so that all the PCs can access the data file.? This is quick and easy in a relaxed setting, but can seem insurmountable moments before Field Day when you are seeing errors and the clock is ticking.? Relax and have fun on Field Day by making sure your software and network are ready to go well in advance!
?
-? First, the new Ontario sections do not go into effect until September 1, 2012.? We will still use ON for this year's event.? I will upgrade the software to include the new sections for next year's Field Day.? Of course, I will be adding the new sections as needed?to the rest of my software?as well.
?
- For the messaging features to work properly, the path to the log file from the computer hosting the log should NOT route through the network. The client's path must route through the network and begin with \\ (the \\ tells the software that it is a client and which PC to connect to as the server). For example, the server's path might be: C:\FD\FDLog.mdb and each of the client's paths would be: \\Develop\C\FD\FDLog.mdb (assuming the PC hosting the file?is Develop).
?
-? The messaging features and band status of other PCs is communicated on port 1000 (the host uses the range of 1000 to 1000 + number of clients connected).? Make sure your Virus / Internet Protection software is allowing the Field Day software permission to communicate.
?
- Because some versions of Windows can be particular about accessing files in the c:\program files directory via the network, it is best to create a separate directory outside of program files on the PC hosting the log file such as c:\FD.
?
- Make sure that all PCs and your router or hub are on a UPS (uninterruptible power supply)! If your PC or router loses power when your generator runs out of gas you are tempting fate!
?
- A backup of all your data is written to every PC connected to the log file every 15 minutes. Even if the PC hosting the log file has a catastrophic failure, you can recover your log from any other PC on the network by clicking File > Combine or Restore from Backup.
?
- Network Setup - we are continuing to receive tons of questions along the lines of?:? "I have (list of PCs / List of Operating Systems) that I'm trying to connect by (list of networking hardware) to set up as a LAN for Field Day. Can you help me set up my LAN?"
?
I'd love to be able to help with that but my knowledge is geared to programming, not networking and I'm by no means an expert there.? That said,?it is generally very easy to set up a network and enable sharing. My networking software has been used successfully for years on a variety of Windows operating systems (I'm not aware of any combination that will not work from Win 95 on up), but I simply don't have the resources it would require to support all the network setup questions coming my way right now in addition to all the software support questions.
?
In a nutshell, all you have to do is:

- Set up your network (you can Google "Set up home network" for all the information you need to get you going)
- Put the FDlog.mdb file in a folder that is accessible to all the PCs on the network
- Make sure the Field Day software is pointing to the correct log file from the Setup form.
- Make sure that your Internet / Virus Protection software is allowing the program to communicate.
?
Finally, those interested in a Call Sign graphic?for their club (or individually) before Field Day,?there is still time, but Brad?will need your information in the next day or two.? Please see:? ?for details.

And in response to the often asked question for which Kimberly and I are very grateful...
?
"I know your upgrades are free, but I also realize how much time and effort coding these enhancements and new programs take and that your pricing policy doesn't fully reflect that. Can I send you something to show my appreciation for your continued efforts?"
