HF Digital ARES/RACES Net
I had mentioned this on the ARES net, but as a reminder this weekly net and YouTube session will begin tonight. I encourage anyone who is interested to join in. The original invitation follows: Hello; This is an invitation for Vermont and regional amateurs to get some weekly practice setting up and using "FLDigi" to send and receive text and files over the radio. Text and standard formatted messages are useful for emergency communications, plus, the ability to use FLDigi opens up scores of interesting digital modes. The net will occur weekly at 7pm Eastern, Wednesday evenings on 80m 3.570Mhz using THOR22. Simultaneously, there will be a Zoom meeting: https://us05web.zoom.us/j/88089907163?pwd=L9IiblvWNZgtitSQTaAUtU8KvsmNol.1 Meeting ID 880 8990 7163 Passcode spCA7P Our focus initially will be to establish keyboard to keyboard communications, using the basic FLDigi application. We will use the Zoom meeting to help folks get their set-ups working. The net will use 3.570 Mhz and THOR22 to start with, because it is part of our "Communications Down Scenario & Self-Activation" procedure, see page 8 of the Vermont RACES-ARES Comms Plan. For a current copy of the plan, it can be found on our groups.io webpage "Files" section: https://vt-ares.groups.io/g/main/files Over time, as we learn our way through this, we will explore other components of the FLDigi software suite, such as FLmsg, as well as other modes available in FLDigi. We can also explore other software packages as well, such as "AndFlmsg", for Android/smartphone depending on participant interest. Please feel free to contact me if you have any comments or questions regarding this net. Thanks; - John Colt NV1Y

Bennington Co On The Map For VTQP 3
Last weekend was the VTQP and as of lately, was very active across the state. It was really nice to see some fellow operators in our county participating (and work them in the contest). Besides myself, I found that Nathan, K1MAZ and Bill, W1BVT were active. If you participated, please let me know as I will put a list of our activity in the next Newsletter. As far as I am aware of, Bennington Co had at least 315 CW, 100 SSB, and 130 Digital QSOs.

Doing Something Different For VTQP
Years ago (Early 2000's) I managed to consistently clean up in the Vermont QSO party- Usually 1st Place Bennington County and 3rd or 4th State. I can't claim the results to any great skill, but rather just sticking with it and a lack of overall activity, especially in Bennington and Orange Counties. Times have changed since the Covid pandemic: First, the rules have changed in that the final score tally is no longer by County. Second, there has been a massive increase in the number of folks who have improved their skills and become competitive in contesting nationwide. Third- FT8 may now be used in the VTQP In the advent of these changes, there are about four skilled and well-equipped stations in northern Vermont that operate two radios at once- one on CW/SSB and the other on FT8. This just isn't a possibility for me and doesn't trip my trigger as far as fun. These past few years I just can't seem to bust my barrier at fifth place, I've concluded that I just can't compete with these more apt stations. To keep it fun while not worrying about a final score- Whenever one operates in a contest, it is fun and beneficial to have some goals in mind to challenge yourself- not necessarily go strictly for a big score. Doing this makes us better operators overall. These goals can be to: Improve your last year's score. Work at least 10,50, 100 (which will get you a certificate), or 250 contacts- any focused number to try to achieve. Possibly work a few new DX. See how close you can get to working all states in a weekend. (After all, they are LOOKING for VT!) I have decided that this year I will operate the VTQP QRP! Maybe I've lost my mind, but I will keep my goals far below my previous runs. I will shoot for at least 250 contacts and attempt to work all states in a weekend. (As a reference my QRO contact count is more like 700) Long story short, I hope you get on the air and have some fun. It is nice to be "on the right side of a pileup". I do highly suggest that if you do, set some modest goals for yourself. 73 de N1SP

SOVAC RADIO CLUB
Good Evening This is you Cub president Bill Clark W1BVT I would like to share some Hamradio opportunity to do some Radio get on the air time with. the veromt QSO Party coming up. I will be trying to get more of this kind of stuff out to the club. as I see it or even if others see this kind of thing reach out here and post it. lets grouw the club and get more in volved. thank you Bill clark W1BVT The Vermont QSO Party starts this FRIDAY at 7PM. We hope to hear many of you on the air. The more Vermont hams get on, the happier all the participants are. Everyone is especially looking for some of those rare Vermont counties. If you are in places like Essex, Orleans, Caledonia, Franklin, Grand Isle, Orange, those are often the most requested ones. If you can go mobile and put some of the rare counties on the air, that is good too. Propagation will be good on ALL the bands 160-10 meters, so do get on and call CQ. Use the spotting network to let everyone know where you are whenever you change bands. Read the rules! Go to: https://www.ranv.org/vtqso.html If you operate on FT8 or FT4 some things to know: 1. You must upload digital contacts from the WSJTx ADIF file SEPARATELY from the CABRILLO file containing the Phone/CW contacts. In other words do not try to log Digital and Phone/CW QSOs in your logging program. The upload will not work. Read the details on the web site. Don’t worry about your score – we will compute that for you. But you must upload a clean log. If not sure what to do, ASK NOW. 2. If you are on FT8 or FT4, you cannot give out your county as a multiplier – only grid squares, which will be FN34, FN33, FN32, FN35, FN44). LET ME KNOW your approximate schedule of when you will be on and where. I will post this to the web site (but don’t do this after Friday afternoon – I will be busy with the contest then). Let’s get on the air and have a ball!

2025 VT QSO Party
QSO parties have become more popular than ever, especially in the last couple years since the "State QSO Party Challenge" https://stateqsoparty.com/ has been created. As always, the VT QSO Party kicks off the season by being the first event. Bennington County is somewhat rare so is coveted for the "hunters". You will find plenty of action simply by calling "CQ Vermont QSO Party" and giving a signal report and county as an exchange. If you really want some action, spot yourself on a cluster before you begin- this will guarantee a pileup. If you have any questions let me know or post them on this group. This is an event that I operate almost every year. Mitch Stern has sent out an announcement to participants in the past, and I have copied it to you as follows... The 2025 Vermont QSO Party is in a mere three weeks: Feb 1-2 UTC, or 7PM Friday, Jan 31 - 7PM Sunday Feb 2. This is Vermont's showcase of amateur radio. Are you ready to get on the air? Full details are at: https://www.ranv.org/vt24.html We are at peak sunspots right now. The high HF bands of 10 and 15 meters do not get better than this. Recent contests have featured big runs into Europe in the morning 7AM-11AM. Don't miss it. There has been a problem with logging digital contacts. Be advised that N1MM, N3FJP and most other programs WILL NOT support VtQP contacts on FT8 and FT4. Please go to the VTQSO Web Site to learn the details of how to log and upload digital QSO's. This is important because improperly formatted logs will rejected during the upload. Last year, we had 3 mobile/rover stations activating all 14 Vermont counties, much to the pleasure of all participants. Who will be able to do activations this year? Each year we designate some club stations as special multipliers. To qualify for this, you have to use a valid club callsign and commit to at least 16 hours on the air over the weekend. On the web site, we provide schedules of Vermont participants where known, so that others can find activity. Please let me know when and where you will be on the air so we can post this. If you cannot operate from home, consider joining the W1NVT host station for an operating slot or two. We will have sizeable antennas and high power to work the maximum number of stations. You can even operate both from home and from W1NVT, if you choose. Please let others know about the Vermont QSO Party, especially those who have not been active recently. Let's all get on the air and have a whale of a time! Mitch

Ed, N2HX - SK
For those who are not yet aware, I heard from my Contest Club (YCCC) on December 15th that Ed Landry, N2HX had passed away. Besides being a HARC and SOVARC member, Ed was one of the more active hams in our region. He lived a full retirement with many trips to the Carribean where he operated HF radio from his hotel balcony and always had a fun tale to tell. He brought support and ideas to both local radio clubs as well as the Yankee Clipper Contest Club and will be missed. Personally, I will miss running into him at various ham fests, Hemmings Cruise-ins and occasionally on HF. Randy N1SP

Greetings SOVARC Members
You have come to the right place! Even though the name of this group is my callsign, N1SP, it is open for use of the SOVARC club to improve our communications chain. In the future I will try to update the title to SOVARC. (I will have to do some admin work) Feel free to chat about any club or ham related topic that you have. Let me know if you have any questions on use. Happy Holidays and 73, Randy N1SP
