Hello Group
Hello from the n_scale group I also like named trains and colorful streamliners Among those that I have ridden on in the past include SP Shasta Daylight, IC City of New Orleans, ATSF San Diegan, ATSF El Capitan. And the recreated "Powhatan Arrow" behind the restored N&W J Class 4-8-4 #611 when she was running railfan excursions in the early 1980's. Plus Amtrak, C&NW commuter trains, and the pre-Amtrak GM&O train between St Louis and Chicago. Also many European trains on the DR and DB (East and West Germany -- primarily the Berlin- Frankfurt US Army duty train) plus SNCF (France), RENFE (Spain) and CP (Portugal). The trip of a lifetime was on the Sud Express (SNCF-RENFE-CP) in December 1987 running between Paris and Porto, Portugal. The rail gauge changes from 1435mm (same as US standard gauge 4 ft 8-1/2 in) to 1525mm (5 ft gauge) at the French-Spanish border. Our train stopped in the SNCF yard at Hendaye. Our cars were moved into a long narrow car shed. A whole series of large jacks which straddled the train simultaneous lifted all the cars about 6 feet off the rail. Then a little low clearance critter engine pulled out all the standard gauge trucks from under our cars and spotted 5ft gauge trucks under each cars bolster(s). The train was lowered onto the new trucks, a safety inspection was made and we were shoved across the river on dual-gauge track to meet our RENFE MaCoSa (EMD licensee) diesel, who took us on to the Portuguese frontier. The CP in Portugal also operates on 1525mm gauge, so no further changeouts were required. On the trip back to Paris we were shoved across the river by the RENFE swticher at Irun and changed back to standard gauge trucks by the SNCF crew at Hendaye. The changeout took about 45 minutes in each direction. For passenger safety you are locked up inside the train while it is up on jacks, so no photos are available of this interesting operation. eNjoy the rest of your weekend Don Brown Tucson AZ USA

Hi there
Hi group just got signed up. I model my own road, Southern Alberta Rail,as I would imagine it today. Passenger service will be provided by Budd Kato RDC's but I am building up a "vintage" fleet of cars to run as an excursion/dinner train as well. While I follow no particular protoype I do try to get a home road feel built into everything. I also enjoy modifying passenger cars into business cars for my road. I think it would be neat if everyone had one. I would love to see an open house where everyone brought a business car from their layout and built a train to tour an N scale empire in style! I am lucky enough to have a dad that is a train nut as well and got a chance to ride the Canadian 3 times on the CPR line before it was routed north over the CN. I was born in 1970 so missed out on all the good stuff. I'm sure I'll get a chance to learn lots of neat things on this list by reading about the experiences of others. grant Calgary Canada

Hello
Hi Everyone, I was just thinking to myself recently that a N scale passenger list would be a great idea and here it is. Guess I got what I wished for, now I think I'll wish for an N scale Milwaukee Road Skytop Lounge Car while I'm at it. Although most people know me for my Kingsbury Branch model railroad, my real love in modeling is passenger cars and trains. I've been interested in them ever since I got into model railroading back in the 1960's. I was fortunate to ride the Hiawatha's before Amtrak came along. I mostly model Milwaukee Road but other railroads as well, such as CB&Q, NP, GN, C&NW, etc. However I never met a passenger car I didn't like or try to figure out how to model. I'm currently working on several projects that will be of interest to this group that I will share in the near future. I'm really excited about this list and look forward to exchanging ideas and techniques with everyone. So long for now, Bill Denton

Dicing and Splicing
Welcome, welcome... Greetings to all... I am sorry that I have been away from the computer... I have awoke to 28 members joining the list, all of which while I slept!!! I hope that you will join me in working towards making this list a very special one. I am surprised to see some notable names being mentioned already, Milwaukee Road, Norfolk & Western, and the lowly and often overlooked Central of Georgia. While I know that Laser Kits offers a couple of the N&W cars for their clear sided kits (a lot of painting and pealing involved) I don't know yet what might come of some of the other favorable car types. I too like both the N&W and CofG cars (I have had a string out for quite some time elsewhere about the disposition of some cars... thankfully I have finally received what I wanted to know about all except coach 1830), and there is no doubt that the Milwaukee Road's Sky Top observation cars are some of the more unique cars and beautiful cars (even though I don't model the MILW. I would gladly find a way to do a sleeper-observation Sky Top), so until someone does such interesting cars does anyone have any ideas? I have spent considerable time over the past few weeks trying to figure out a way to kitbash some Kato smooth sided passenger cars into some of the cars I need (the N&W/Wabash/B&M combines, coaches and cafe-lounge cars, CofG 56-seat coaches and the I.C. 56-seat coaches [one modernized and at least one lightweight]) but last night I began to look at the photos of the Des Plaines Hobbies cars and started wondering if "dicing and splicing" might be an option here. Some of you might remember back over ten years ago Model Railroader ran a two part article on kitbashing heavyweight passenger cars, authored by the same gentleman who has contributed a great deal in regards to passenger train modeling, Bill "The Maumee Route" Darnaby I believe is his name. He "diced and spliced" himself a wide variety of heavyweight cars that were really very nice when he got done... couldn't some Des Plaines kits be done the same? Let me know what you think on this... Also, does anyone have any photos they would like to share... the files section is wide open right now... jerry <jmlaboda@...> N-scale Varnish List: <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/N-scaleVarnish> RailRoad Caboose List: <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RRcaboose>

Member #9 2
I wonder if being member 9 is anything like Love Potion Number Nine? I am an avid passenger car/train fan. My primary interest has been the "named trains" of the 30s-50s. I have lots of Kato smoothside and fluted cars as well as lots of the new Con Cor Budd cars. So far, the only passenger car modeling that I have done is putting some SAL & ACL Historical Society decals on a couple of undec Con Cor Budd cars (one 10-6 and one coach). I experimented with a set of Brass Car Sides parts and ended up messing them up with super glue. That car has become my airbrush and decal guinea pig. I really want to get better at the modeling aspects of the hobby rather than just the accumulating part. I want to build a few unique cars to add to the consists of Kato and Con Cor cars to start on the road towards more prototypical trains. I like electronics such as Richmond Control's lighting boards (see my article in one of the Summer issues of N Scale 1998) and want to try putting in some Tomar drumheads. Thanks to the Central of Georgia Historical Society ( http://www.cofg.org/ ) Microscale will soon have decals to do CofG's smoothsided Nancy Hanks II and the corrugated/fluted Man O'War. My girlfriend is a CofG fan, so Man O'War will be a simple decaling project for the cars. The E units will be another story. The decals for CofG E and F units only have the edging for the black stripe, but not the stripe itself. I want to do N& W's Powhattan Arrow or Pocahontas some day too. Laser Horizons has started making sides for those cars using some drawings I provided from old issues of Mainline Modeler. I'm full of ideas, dreams, wishes, etc. I just have to find the time to get them worked in to the schedule that includes a "real" job, the National Guard, two great kids, a girlfriend, a house, and writing for two magazines! Lets make this list a fun and exciting one! Terry -- Terry Pitts Augusta, GA Builder of three-foot models. CofG Decals
Jerry et al, The Microscle decals for the CofG hood units(RS, GP, SC) include the black stripe. The Cab unit decals do not. I talked to Craig Walker about this a couple weeks ago. They still have quite a few of the cab unit decals in stock. When those are gone, they will "improve" the artwork! Terry -- Terry Pitts Augusta, GA Builder of three-foot models. Introduction 4
Hello all, Just the other day I was thinking how agrivating it was on some of the other lists to see an enticing discussion only to find out the subject was HO and wouldn't apply to N. Those guys never specifiy the scale! I was thinking it would be great to have a scale specific list for passenger cars. And here it is. To help get this list off the ground I've decided to contribute something valuable right away. I'm Jim Semikoski formerly of Jim's N-Scale Shells. I learned to make molds and shells from the legendary Pete Peter's of Ojai California and make passenger cars from Norm Wright of San Diego. For 15 years I produced Kato quality shells for friends. The buisness finally got to be more than I could handle so sold it. So what has this to do with passenger equipment. Well, although I produced diesel shells for others, I was able to produce virtually any passenger car I wanted for myself in large numbers. And it was really pretty easy and inexpensive. Back in 87' it seemed Key would never come out with the articulated cars to go with the Brass Daylight. So I did them myself. I've posted a quick picture of the diner to the list. Sorry, it's not a very good one, but it was on hand. I had written a series of articles, (never published), on exactly how to do it and where to get the materials you'd need. I've shared the articles with friends, Bill Denton of this list for one. So my contribution to get this list off to a good start is, if the members of the list would like, I would be happy to start posting this series of articles to the list. Let me know, Jim

Budd car fluting
Mark I saw your exquisite passenger car models at the Reno NSC 2000 convention and am glad to see you on this list. I am also glad to see photos of your models posssted in the Files section. There was a recent thread on the general n_scale list on how to kitbash a Burlington E5 A+B diesel. One suggestion from Russell Straw in Texas was to use Williams Bros corrugated steel roofing to simulate the fluting. A photo of his model is here http://hometown.aol.com/ramblinrus/myhomepage/profile.html How do you simulate the fluting on your models? eNjoy Don Brown Tucson AZ USA

SP 3-unit articulated diner
The photo posted in Files of Jim Semikoski's model of this SP car reminded me of my first attempt to model this unique car. I used a Rapido "shorty" RPO car with a couple of roof details added for the kitchen car, and the two outboard "dining cars" were Minitrix 72 ft coaches. The two outboard trucks were MT 1017 4-wheel trucks. The two inboard trucks were MT1018 6-wheel trucks. A simple span bolster provided the articulation joint, with the "kitchen" car having both 6-wheel trucks mounted to it. A long screw coming up through the open (outer) end of the span bolster provided a "pin" which fit into a corresponding hole in the end of each of the two "dining car" bodies. I still have the model but no digital camera to shoot it with. BTW Jim's model looks much better. eNjoy Don Brown Tucson AZ USA

My first passenger car project
I couldn't get the upload to the files section to work, so here is a picture on my own web space: http://members.home.net/terrypitts/SAL106.JPG This is a recent con cor unlettered Budd 10-6 with ACL&SAL Historical Society decals on it. I'll admit it's not exactly a master model railroader project, but it was fun for me and it's a pretty good match for the prototype. Terry -- Terry Pitts Augusta, GA Builder of three-foot models.
