Re: Thoughts on Powering N Scale EMU models

I have 6 of the Kato RDCs, all fitted with the dedicated Digitrax decoders.? They all run fine wether on their own, pulling a couple of passenger cars or MUed together.
What problems have you had with them?
Steve

Kato RDC units have no problems with speed control, single or pulling trailers.? What makes you think that they don’t?

Here’s a good website with lots of those tomix chassis dimensions?

Re: Thoughts on Powering N Scale EMU models

Hi Tom, thanks very much for your thoughts.
?
I wasn't thinking about the powered chassis from Kato, Greenmax, TomyTec, etc., but I will take a look and try to find lengths that might work.

Thanks,

Re: Thoughts on Powering N Scale EMU models

Hi Luke,

I'm assuming that EMU is an acronym for "Electric Multiple Unit" or something like that. If correct, my thought would be that there are 2 options to consider.

Tomytec chassis - available in a variety of wheelbases and truck centers. Depending on your specific prototype, they will likely need some modifications, but they seem to fit the bill for a lot of modelers.

The second possibility would be to utilize chassis from one of Kato's Japanese MU train sets. They seem to churn these out in different prototypes and variations, and one or more might yield chassis that will fit whatever you are building.

One source for both is a company called Plaza Japan. I am sure there are others, including some hobby shops in the US that carry a lot of Kato Japanese prototype models.

Is speed control of the Kato RDC a common issue? I haven't run mine much (been without a layout for a while) but I don't recall any problems.

Best of luck with your project.

Tom D.

Any thoughts on how to power the cars? The 85-foot car might work with Kato's RDC chassis. However, I would probably lean toward something with better speed control that can drag multiple trailers.

Many thanks,

Re: enclosed end observation cars AND other questions...

You might try putting them in hot water for a few seconds and then gently bend them. Fox Valley and ESM also make wheelsets with different length axels. You might get some shorter ones.

I think recommendations may depend on what your approach is to building the model.? Plastic/brass/3D print?? Scratchbuild/kitbash?
?
My general approach, if rtr or side kits are not available, is to 'cut and paste' using parts of various Micro-trains (or Rivarossi in the old days) heavyweights to get approximations of the window arrangement.? I don't see why that wouldn't work in roughing out the enclosed obs deck and for the windows at the end of the car.? However, the end result is usually an approximation of the prototype, not a precise model.? If using this approach, note that the MTL obs has 4 close side windows, which are also one of the 'spotting features' of the plan 3521 cars.? Before I found a brass 3521 (the version used by ATSF- see below), I was considering using parts of a 10-1-2 and the MTL obs and thought I would get close.
?
Another thing that might be worth looking into- Pecos River Brass did earlier versions of the 3521- which had the lounge end enclosed with a vestibule (that is, it had doors at that end, not a solarium, although they did have a pair of end windows).? They also did an open platform version. As far as I know, they didn't do an enclosed solarium version, but the 3521 models do show up on ebay or used brass vendors now and then.? Reworking the end into a solarium would be old-school brass fabrication, and out of my league.

Union Station has the “tapered” ends as part of their product line. ?I was hoping to ask the railyard if anyone has had any experience with their car kits; the American Limited core kits seem to be unavailable again (I now have two?of their kits and am working one into a Penn Central sleeper).

Also on the list of good questions to ask; does anyone regularly use?the American Limited trucks enclosed in the core kits? ?I can’t get mine to straighten out, nor can I get them loose enough to allow for the wheels to spin. ?Any help offered in that area would be greatly appreciated, as the rest of the kit seems pretty neat.

Have you contacted the Newberry to see if they have elevation views?

Do you know if any 3521 cars are extant?

Hi All,
?
I'm not actively casting shells any longer. However I recently needed something for myself and a friend so not wanting to waste the remaining resin, I cast two E5B shells.
I sent a message to the original poster but didn't hear back from him. So, if anyone wants them they are available. I also went ahead and painted them and they are a good match for the Kato E5 A units. I'm asking $65.00 each and that includes postage. PayPal only please. E-mail first to see if they are still available.
