Homann Designs 2015 Christmas Break
Hi All, Another year comes to a close too quickly. Homann Designs would like to take this opportunity to wish all a safe and merry festive season. We would also like to thank all for their support throughout the past year. The new webstore is finally installed (it's always more tricky than imagined), which will help with mobile navigation and brightens it up a bit. We will be closed until the 12th January 2016, taking a long deserved annual family camping holiday in Port Fairy. Hopefully, there won't be too many 40c plus days. Any orders place during this period will be processed once we return on the 12th. We will still be monitoring emails for anything urgent. We wish you a great festive season and look forward to supporting you in 2016. Cheers, Peter -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- web : http://www.homanndesigns.com email : sales@... Phone : +61 421 601 665

ModIP Development 9
Hi All, It's been quite a while since this group has been active, a year or so if I'm correct. Anyhow, I'm in the process of starting back onto the ModIP development. The ModIP is an Ethernet based Modbus device. Ethernet opens up a huge possibilities for ModIP. The microprocessor used will be an order of magnitude more powerful than that used in the ModIP so I should be able to squeeze a lot into it. The purpose for this message is to ask those of you that have used the ModIO for various tasks, What features would you like to see in the ModIP What formfactor would suit you best What applications are you using the ModIO for What applications would you use a ModIP for This input will help me decide the range of features that I need to accomodate in the design. Cheers, Peter

ModIO Analog Input Variation 2
I don't use my ModIO analog inputs for any application yet, but I am curious about reducing the ~10% variation I get using a potentiometer between the +5(pin1) and Ground(pin4) for each input. Is there a common fix for this? Thanks. -- Kirk Wallace http://www.wallacecompany.com/machine_shop/ http://www.wallacecompany.com/E45/index.html California, USA

ModIO with libmodbus and Reset 7
I've been playing with libmodbus 3 on a Ubuntu PC and a ModIO. It works fine, but if I make a configuration change, I need to reset the ModIO in order for the change to take effect. The problem is that a reset in my program returns a send error. My guess is that the reset starts before the reply packet gets sent. Also, even after settling for a bit the next packet sent to the ModIO errors too. Is there a recommended procedure for doing a reset within a program? A reset seems to work okay in my LinuxCNC application, but that runs in a loop which maybe flushes the problem out. -- Kirk Wallace http://www.wallacecompany.com/machine_shop/ http://www.wallacecompany.com/E45/index.html California, USA

ModIO and Half a Duplex 8
I'm working on getting a VFD setup with Modbus half duplex for LinuxCNC. I got a cheap RS232 to RS485 half duplex adapter: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-9-Pin-RS-232-RS-485-Interface-Converter-/180768627630 and used my Modio as a testbed to see if the adapter would work using this setup: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ModIO I set the jumpers for half duplex because the VFD I am using only has half duplex. I wired the adapter to the A terminals, but could only get the receive only functions to work with the jumpers set for full duplex. As a guess I moved the wires to the B terminals and now the ModIO works fine with all functions in half duplex. Is this the way the ModIO should be configured or have I missed something? Thanks for any help. -- Kirk Wallace http://www.wallacecompany.com/machine_shop/ http://www.wallacecompany.com/E45/index.html California, USA

Homann Designs 2011-2012 Festive Season Break.
Hi all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support during 2011. We will be closed from the 23rd December until the 13th January 2012. Any orders place during this period will be processed once we return on the 16th January. I will still be monitoring emails for anything urgent and may get time to process a few orders. I'll be taking the family camping to Port Fairy, on the South West coast of Victoria. I call it camping but we seem to take more and more each year. http://g.co/maps/v6e7g I plan to spend a bit of time honing my slope soaring skills. http://youtu.be/TyoPo8gef54 I'm hoping that I'll get a few of my new designs into production early in the new year. The first should be the new line of Modbus products; ModIP - Ethernet based Modbus unit (Should go well with the Ethernet Smooth Stepper) ModIO+ - All the features of the ModIP but serial based comms ModBrick - Expansion Modules for the ModIP and ModIO+ MiniMod - Small dedicated ModIO unit MicroMod - Even small dedicated ModIO unit The other goal is to get my new G540 Based controller released. I've been selling the G540 based Controller Parts kit very successfully for a year or two now. The number of downloads of the schematic is phenomenal. http://www.homanndesigns.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=27 http://www.homanndesigns.com/pdfs/EN010_V8.pdf I continuously get asked to build up controllers, "ready to go" so I need to set up a production assembly process and offer it as a complete system. I wish you all a great festive season and look forward to supporting you in 2012. configuration of modio and digspeed combination - failed 4
Hello to all, First I have to say that I bought the combination around 3 to 5 years ago and it landed in a box where it just waited to get discovered again. 1.) I setup mach3 3.043.022. - Ok 2.) I connected modio v.2.2, downloaded modio.dll 1.03.) Configured it and I got inputs and outputs - just works4.) Setup digispeed-xl v4.0 on the spindle - manual ops - just works5.) Soldered cable to connect modio with digispeed - red light - looks good. Cable setup from J5 -> J3: Pin4 - Pin3 Pin3 - Pin4 Pin2 - Pin1 GND to GND Vcc to VCC 6.) Tried to figure out how to configure Config->Motor Output->Spindle ->failed7.) Tried to figure out how to configure Config->Spindle Setup ->failed Now the only thing which works if I set spindlespeed S1000, M3 or M4 is the Directional relay which comes on -> all other combinations of settings just do nothing on ENABLE nor on PWM output. If I put a oscilloscope to the pins on J5, pin3, or pin2 nothing happens, except pin4 toggles. If I force Enable via J13 I have a pwm (actually just spikes) measured on the led but it never changes and it comes from the pic onboard the digispeed, and therefore has nothing to do with modio. The Questions which I could not find answers anywhere or figure out by myself: Q1) Since I figured out that regardless if I submit a M3 or M4 the direction relay always comes on. (setup as seen in manual that both outputs for cc/ccw are set to output#2 which maps to Port0,2). Shouldn?t I expect that the relay come on on m3 and doesn?t do anything on m4 ? Q2) What do I have to setup in Config->Motor Output->Spindle for direction and step... I tried all combinations of port 3,4 low/high... nothing changed. (maybe J13, but tried in all 3 combos (on12,on23,off), whereas on12 started pwm regardless even if reset was triggered). Q3) Config->Spindle Setup->Motor Control-> Do I have to use step/dir or pwm? Q4) Config->spindle setup->modbus spindle - use step/dir as wellenabled and Reg 64 Max. ADC Count 16380. maybe somthing to set here? Q5) Shouldn?t the digispeed communicate with modio via serial protocol? Please help I?m really hopeless. all the best seth [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

ModIO with MPG 2
I've got a MPG hooked up to a ModIO board and it works pretty good, however when I one little problem. When I turn the wheel in a single direction it works perfect, but when I reverse direction and go back to zero the X position will be off by a single count. However, the on the settings screen the MPG has made it back to the correct count. I'm using the ModIO.dll (2.1a Aug 2007) and the latest stable version of Mach3 (Version R3.043.022) Papa J

Mach3 brain writing to LCD
Hello all, and thank you for this forum. I have Mach3 R3.043.022 running with a ModIO connected. I have the scanning KeyPad working with a brain, and can use the TESTModIO feature to write a few characters to the LCD. However when I try and make a brain to write a string to the LCD, I get blank. I have the Modbus set to output from 64 to 127. Writing words to the ModBus outputs gets a few characters, but "SendString" gets me no where. Any ideas on how to do this? Thanks. Pete L.

MP-01 with EMC 8
I am starting to think about ditching Mach3 on my mill for EMC2 because I would really like rigid tapping. The thing is I really like my pendant (mp-01). Has anyone made one work with EMC? Do I just treat it like a ModIO? -Jerry

485
this is just what i needed thanks alot From your emails, I'm presuming that you want to control your device from a ModIO, using the ModIO to do the RS232 to RS485 conversion. In this situation the ModIO RS485 port is working as the master port. As such, the B+,B- lines carry the messages transmitted from the PC. The A+,A- lines carry the Replies transmitted from your device.

your 485 is marked a+b+a-b- the 485 0n this equp is marked tx+ tx- rx+rx- i cannot find the way to interchange this 485 should be 485 in any country To: modio@... From: groups@... Date: Wed, 18 May 2011 09:04:20 +1000 Subject: Re: [modio] 485 wiring Hi, Not sure what the question is here. If you want to use the RS485 pins for RS232 comms to the PC, that is not possible. The only way to access the RS232 comms is thru the 10 pin idc connector J7. The four RS485 pins 1-4 on J10 can set configured to work in full duplex mode where there is a Receive pair A+, A- and a Transmit pair B+,B-. This is sometimes referred to as RS-422. You can also configure the pins 1-4 to by 1/2 duplex comms where A+,A- are used both for transmit and receive. This is the traditional RS485 comms.

Fried modio, digispeed and KBIC..
Hi Peter, I received the MODIO and Digispeed SL yesterday, happily I tested and configured MODIO last night, everything works great, it read the switches fine, did a toggle test on the led and it worked as well. I woke up this morning, tested the Digispeed without attaching it to the controller by connecting it to the Modio, the unit flashes red quickly, I presume that means the unit is ok? I installed Digispeed into the Sherline speed controller, tested it in manual mode and it worked as described in the manual. Next I plugin the the mini-din plug from modio into digispeed, all I hear is a pop and I see magic smoke.. My mistake, the speed controller power was on, so is modio. Is that what killed my system?

Too many ModIO's defined in the Configs 6
Hello all- I have been using my ModIO for a year or so and it has been working well. I find that I am now in need of more IO so I bough another ModIO last month with the intent of using it with the original ModIO as a RS485 converter. I have doubled checked my wiring and dip jumpers but always get- "Too many ModIO's defined in the Configs "ModIO2" has been ignored and disabled". I have cleared out the config table and switched ModIO's from master to slave with the same result. Both ModIO's work with RS232. Any thoughts? Have a good day. Jack

Help - ver 2.2 not working well in MPG mode 2
I have a ver 2.2 ModIO that I got a long time ago and now I am back into CNC and getting it up and going. I have it configured as default ModIO and talking to Mach3 (latest version). Everything works great except the MPG in Velocity mode. The velocity is very irregular and jumps from low to high regardless of rpm of the MPG. I have verified this exact same setup using second parallel port and all works well so I assume it is a timing value in the ModIO that is being reported too slowly or maybe mis-calculated. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have not flashed PIC with any upgrades. It is as purchased several years ago. I am only trying to make a pendant with this ModIO. Do I need a newer version of the ModIO? Can I flash my ver 2.2 with a better firmware? Thanks for any help. Jason
