Can I adapt these mics?

Hi all.

I have the Zoom F3 recorder, which unfortunately doesn't support Zoom's own mic modules. I have their X/Y module, and I'd like to adapt it with XLR connectors. It has a proprietary connector, with five contacts on each side.

I was going to build a little X/Y setup with JLI 2555 capsules and a dual-channel OPA Alice, but might I be able to adapt this Zoom module instead?

Thanks for any guesses.

Gavin

Zoom makes an adapter that goes from their proprietary connector to two XLRs.? You could probably figure out the pins using one of those and a volt meter set for continuity...

Hi Gavin - Lacking a schematic, I would open the device and see what sort of circuit is inside. That might put you on the right track. JHR

Thanks. Do you have a link to that? I've never heard of it. They make an extension cable that has the proprietary connector at both ends, but I'm not aware of an XLR one.?

The Zoom EXH-6 is the part I mentioned.

Thanks, but that actually does the opposite of what I want to do. That lets you plug XLR mics into the proprietary jack. I want to plug a mic module with the proprietary plug into XLR jacks.?

That's why it's called reverse engineering...

Ah, yes, but would it not allow you to trace signal continuity from specific pins son the XLR connectors to their respective pins on the proprietary Zoom connector? I thought the suggestion was to pattern your own cable after the pin outs on the Zoom cable, the trick is knowing what pins on each connector match up.

Perhaps this is double reverse - reverse engineering ... like reverse-reverse psychology where you end up psyching yourself out, instead of the other guy? (Sorry, just poking some fun along the way...) :-) JHR

Well, shoot. I NOW see somebody beat me to that pun ... JHR :-(
