Re: JLI-3412

I hadn't noticed that the 3412? was a 34mm capsule -- my mistake - sorry about that.
I hadn't thought about trying one. They are more expensive than the 34mm LDC I'm using at present ( ) which I've found to be pretty good.
Those are certainly less noisy, and have a better overall frequency response than any of the electrets I've tried so far.

I can see how the 16mm or 25mm electrets might be more suitable where it is not feasible to include 34mm capsules -- in multi capsule mics for example.
And there is of course a voltage multiplier to find room for, with externally polarised condenser mics..... Again, not always a sensible option.

As for EQ adjustments, I'm not a fan of adding passive EQ into the mic itself, to try and overcome the peaks and 'zing' of some of these capsules.
I prefer to either add any required EQ in post - for recordings - or do it at line level in my channel strip for real time live requirements. Better options to apply any EQ more precisely.
(Some notes on that project? ).

I have some of the brass ones and they do sound reasonably good (especially for ?3), but they have quite a pronounced peak around 10k - so there's a fizzy zingy sort of edge to the otherwise balanced tone.

The 2555B is well liked on this list (I don't have one) and by all accounts better than those ubiquitous brass 25mm capsules.

I am hoping the 3412 has a balanced tone similar to the 2555b rather than the zingy tone of the generic brass ones.

Some electrets with that kind of backplate structure have grills across the front - some not.? Those that I've had from Aliexpress don't sound too bad.
Certainly very good value for money.....

Re: JLI-3412

I have tried it. It does not have a pronounced peak. I actually like the TSB2555B better as an all around go to mic.

but that actually does the opposite of what I want to do.

Ah, yes, but would it not allow you to trace signal continuity from specific pins son the XLR connectors to their respective pins on the proprietary Zoom connector? I thought the suggestion was to pattern your own cable after the pin outs on the Zoom cable, the trick is knowing what pins on each connector match up.

Perhaps this is double reverse - reverse engineering ... like reverse-reverse psychology where you end up psyching yourself out, instead of the other guy? (Sorry, just poking some fun along the way...) :-) JHR

If so how does it compare to the 2555B or other well known capsules?

That's why it's called reverse engineering...

Thanks, but that actually does the opposite of what I want to do. That lets you plug XLR mics into the proprietary jack. I want to plug a mic module with the proprietary plug into XLR jacks.?

Thanks. Do you have a link to that? I've never heard of it. They make an extension cable that has the proprietary connector at both ends, but I'm not aware of an XLR one.?

Re: Can I adapt these mics?

Hi Gavin - Lacking a schematic, I would open the device and see what sort of circuit is inside. That might put you on the right track. JHR

Re: Can I adapt these mics?

Zoom makes an adapter that goes from their proprietary connector to two XLRs.? You could probably figure out the pins using one of those and a volt meter set for continuity...

Can I adapt these mics?

Hi all.

I have the Zoom F3 recorder, which unfortunately doesn't support Zoom's own mic modules. I have their X/Y module, and I'd like to adapt it with XLR connectors. It has a proprietary connector, with five contacts on each side.

I was going to build a little X/Y setup with JLI 2555 capsules and a dual-channel OPA Alice, but might I be able to adapt this Zoom module instead?

Thanks for any guesses.

Gavin

Yeah, I might move the ring screw holes out just to Make sure there's enough support for the diaphragm
