Where have all my steps gone?
Mike Hammel
I have a "missing step" problem. No, my porch isn't missing!

I am running a router with 2000 steps per inch on x, 400 steps per inch on y. If I run simple patterns, I don't loose any steps. If I do some pocketing or engraving, I start loosing steps. I think (I'm probably wrong) that I am seeing an accumulation of fractional missed steps because Mach 2 goes out to the forth digit and I am only able to go .0025 on the y and .0005 on the x. X rarely misses steps, y is the worse (400 steps per inch). I have tried slowing y down to a crawl and I still end up missing steps. Any Ideas? If you want to use it with KeyGrabber then it has to be USB. KeyGrabber will allow you program the fire buttons to act as keys and will allow you to define the function of each axis. Les Matthew A. Hi Mike:
There can be alot of reasons for losing steps. The fourth digit is not one of them . Mach2 keeps track no matter the number of digits. If you'd like to see 5 or 6 digits, then you need only change the DRO in the screen designer. Trust me, the problem is other than mathmatical. Now as to what this particular problem is, we need some testing I think. 400 steps per inch is VERY low and it may be an acceleration problem. Resonance sets in easily in something this low, other problems can also be accentuated by such a low count. Though this seems to be a normal resolution for plasma work because theres no cutting torque required, pretty strong motors are needed if actually cutting material with this low resolution. Is this servo's or steppers. How many oz/inch if steppers? Is it doing this in the air or only when cutting.? Only router (or spindle) off or on? Thanks, Art www.artofcnc.ca > If I run simple patterns, I don't loose any steps. If I do some pocketing or engraving, I start loosing steps. Before I expound on my problem, let me say that Mach 2 is a GREAAAAATTTTT program. I would not be in "production" if not for you and Mach 2. You have been tremendous help and to that I say thank you. My router is cutting foam. virtually zero resistance. I am running steppers @ 125 oz in torque. I have played around with motor tuning and thought I had everything tuned in. I am not sure what the numbers mean in the velocity and acceleration settings area under motor tuning. I know I have my y (problem axis) set at 1.5 velocity and 3 accel. Maybe I am missing something simple. For now, I just re-reference every couple of parts. This keeps everything fairly accurate. Thanks for any help, Mike Hammel www.fancyfoam.com 1704 Bullard Arkansas City, KS 67005 ----- Original Message -----

Half and full step are known to lose steps more easily when under load. Mach2 does pretty good with them, but not as good as Dos. This is because the pulse stream of Mach2 while very stable does have phase distortion as a function of its algorithm. This doesn't affect microsteppers but full and half steps can be affected unless the driver is very well matched to the stepper motor. Its a good thing you have a workaround as this can be very difficult to track down and fix. Does this happen in Exact Stop or only CV modes?? Thanks, Art www.artofcnc.ca ----- Original Message -----

I'll do some more testing regarding cv or full stop.

I have my kernal speed set at 45000, would a lower speed help, hurt or make no diff? Mike Hammel www.fancyfoam.com 1704 Bullard Arkansas City, KS 67005 ----- Original Message -----

I tested at cv and full stop. Really doesn't matter, I still loose steps. I then ran it at 50% speed in cv mode and still lost steps. I am not missing alot, just enough to make me question my repeatability. Thanks, Mike Hammel www.fancyfoam.com 1704 Bullard Arkansas City, KS 67005 ----- Original Message -----
