Re: Where have all my steps gone?

Mike Hammel

Great to here from you Art.

Before I expound on my problem, let me say that Mach 2 is a GREAAAAATTTTT program.
I would not be in "production" if not for you and Mach 2. You have been tremendous help and to that I say thank you.

My router is cutting foam. virtually zero resistance. I am running steppers @ 125 oz in torque. I have played around with motor tuning and thought I had everything tuned in. I am not sure what the numbers mean in the velocity and acceleration settings area under motor tuning. I know I have my y (problem axis) set at 1.5 velocity and 3 accel.

Maybe I am missing something simple. For now, I just re-reference every couple of parts. This keeps everything fairly accurate.

Thanks for any help,

Mike Hammel

Hi Mike:

There can be alot of reasons for losing steps. The fourth digit is not one
of them . Mach2 keeps track no matter the number of digits. If you'd like to
see 5 or 6 digits, then you need only change the DRO in the screen designer.
Trust me, the problem is other than mathmatical.
Now as to what this particular problem is, we need some testing I think.
400 steps per inch is VERY low and it may be an acceleration problem.
Resonance sets in easily in something this low, other problems can also be
accentuated by such a low count. Though this seems to be a normal resolution
for plasma work because theres no cutting torque required, pretty strong
motors are needed if actually cutting material with this low resolution. Is
this servo's or steppers. How many oz/inch if steppers?
Is it doing this in the air or only when cutting.? Only router (or
spindle) off or on?

Thanks,

pocketing or engraving, I start loosing steps. I think (I'm probably wrong)
that I am seeing an accumulation of fractional missed steps because Mach 2
goes out to the forth digit and I am only able to go .0025 on the y and
.0005 on the x.
