mach4 is working pretty well for me with just a few annoying bugs. when you open the program it shows the last jog increment but it actually has something else stored in memory and if you jog intending to jog .01" you may jog 1" breaking a cutter. i am not good at remembering these bugs. i would like to seith to a dedicated controller but i have my screens and methods all set up to make life easy for me. i doubt i could make the switch. i am under treatment for stage 4 cancer and have very little energy and occasional brain fog. i can only work half days at best and do not need more work, i want less.

I can understand your frustration. Maybe now that we've discussed the heck out of it, they'll pay some attention. Though from what I understand, this is not actually an official Mach group. If I'm correct, we're lucky that they spend any time here at all. Heck, they could call it "recentfiles.ini" or something that makes sense, right? I've given up on talking to the Microsoft folks, myself. Been using their stuff for quite a long time. Hope the Mach folks don't do the same sorts of idiotic messing about that MS does.

to get rid of a file in the list you need to open machine.ini in the working profile with mach4 closed and delete it and then restart mach4 because it apparently keeps a local file of machine.ini and writes it back

i still would like to have mach4 ask if you want to remove the file from the list if it is not found, that would serve everyone's needs without you having to remember the file and edit yourself while mach4 is closed. i hate these sorts of work arounds that have to be remembered. i also would like the most recent file to be moved to the top of the list as it is in other programs i use.

I meant some programs let you clear the list, eg in MS Office you can right-click the list and it'll have a "Clear recents" option, something like that.

?

I very much doubt Mach4 does this,

?

If the list does wind up in the registry, what you can do is delete all of the files, then save the Key (registry folder) to a file (will have a reg extension).? If you then open that file in the future it will ask if you want to replace the current Key with it, thus clearing the list.

?

Oh, and before I said to search for 'Values' in the registry, should have said 'Data'.

?

Of course given the Mach devs don't have much of a clue about where you are supposed to put stuff (C;\Mach4? Sure!), their list could be anywhere, but probably in the install folder where they?dump everything else.

?

Use regedit to search for one of the files on the list, it can search for 3 types of things so just leave 'Value' ticked.? Try a partial match as well.? This will be a bit slow as Values aren't indexed..

?

The reasons why no-one clears out the list is because it wastes time, and the files may only be temporarily unavailable (different flash drive, network drive etc) so wiping the 'dead' ones will annoy a different bunch of people.? There is the occasional program that'll let you clear the list, not all that common.

This is a Mach3 USER support group.

Mach3 has been off life support for many, many years.

Spenser's original question?was about Mach4, which is much better supported, at least by a small margin?(!), in their forum.

Tom, long time Mach 3 user who has moved on to Mach4;), however reluctantly! And it works well other than it's darn recent files list!!!

Use regedit to search for one of the files on the list, it can search for 3 types of things so just leave 'Value' ticked.? Try a partial match as well.? This will be a bit slow as Values aren't indexed..

The reasons why no-one clears out the list is because it wastes time, and the files may only be temporarily unavailable (different flash drive, network drive etc) so wiping the 'dead' ones will annoy a different bunch of people.? There is the occasional program that'll let you clear the list, not all that common.

i will probably just give up on the recently used files list. will probably take it off the screen so i am not tempted. (fortunately mach4 screen editing is much easier than mach3). and put the ones i use all the time in a folder and use open instead of open recent.

to get rid of a file in the list you need to open machine.ini in the working profile with mach4 closed and delete it and then restart mach4 because it apparently keeps a local file of machine.ini and writes it back

i still would like to have mach4 ask if you want to remove the file from the list if it is not found, that would serve everyone's needs without you having to remember the file and edit yourself while mach4 is closed. i hate these sorts of work arounds that have to be remembered. i also would like the most recent file to be moved to the top of the list as it is in other programs i use.

also if there is not good rigidity the bit will chatter and make its own mess. ideally if you are moving from with grain to across grain you should change the feed speed. but i doubt that is possible in vcarve. best you can do is get the machine really rigid and use high quality bits. don't expect the perfection that you can get in metal or plastic from wood.

i have been fighting wood for years making mechanical parts. unless i slow things down to the point that i am making $10 an hour, perfection is just not possible.plastic is no problem but wood ???

personally, looking at the varied depths of the cuts, and the slightly segments curves of the letters...I think you have a bit of mechanical flex/slop/freeplay in the drive line or Z headstock

BTDT .? A couple thousandths of freeplay will let the bit jump around a bit leaving odd curves and varied depths of cut

that was my point. I walk up to the table, plug in my big a__ 240 cable, flip the switches on, swing the monitor arm out, turn on the computer, whip something up in Vcarve, , fire up Mach 3 app and load the gcode and off we go. no fiddling involved. also why I haven't bothered upgrading to 4? as my sys all works just fine (ain't broke don't fix it)

Re: saved files

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

the first thing i did was read RTFM and there was no mention. then i looked for a file that made sense to hold the file list. it did not occur to me that it would be in machine.ini.

to get rid of a file in the list you need to open machine.ini in the working profile with mach4 closed and delete it and then restart mach4 because it apparently keeps a local file of machine.ini and writes it back

i still would like to have mach4 ask if you want to remove the file from the list if it is not found, that would serve everyone's needs without you having to remember the file and edit yourself while mach4 is closed. i hate these sorts of work arounds that have to be remembered. i also would like the most recent file to be moved to the top of the list as it is in other programs i use.

Re: saved files

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Kind of an interesting subject.? Reminds me of an issue with AlibreCAD a while ago.? If one of the files in the history was missing it trashed the entire history.? So if you moved the file outside the IDE it had some pretty lousy side effects.? But it didn't show up that way.? My files all happened to be on the file server. ?Because the P: drive wasn't available the system automatically trashed the history.

?

We brought up the issue.? I don't think it's been fixed yet.? Don't remember.

?

With this subject in mind I loaded my old Codewright text editor from Borland (circa 1991) that was one of the first IDE systems that colourized text based on the language.? It has a side by side compare that is still IMHO, unmatched in any other IDE.

?

Anyway I renamed one of the files in the history (to make it go away) and then range it again.? The file name was still in the list.? I then tried to load that file and it just loaded a blank document with that name.

?

Move forward to Notepad++ (Free text software that handles both linux and dos file formats) that also colours text etc.? Found a file half way in the list.? Closed Notepad++ and then renamed that file.? Restarted Nodepad++ and sure enough the file was still there.? But this time when I clicked on it I was told the file was no longer there and would I like to create one with that name.? I said no, and the file vanished from the list.

?

That's the behavior we want.? We really don't want a file removed from a list because it might be on a dongle that has just been moved to get a copy of an updated gcode file or something else.? Then put the dongle back in and all the files are back.? So only if you try and access the file should it do anything with the history and otherwise it should just fall off the end of the list when it's at the bottom and new files are accessed.

?

BTW.? My licensed MACH3 doesn't have a recently used file list.

?

And LinuxCNC has the recent files list and throws up an error if you try and load a file on the list that is missing.? Stopping and restarting LinuxCNC does not remove that file from the list.? The only way to get rid of it, short of editing where the list lives, is to let it slip down and off the bottom of the list.

?

The reasons why no-one clears out the list is because it wastes time, and the files may only be temporarily unavailable (different flash drive, network drive etc) so wiping the 'dead' ones will annoy a different bunch of people.? There is the occasional program that'll let you clear the list, not all that common.

you are right i pointed out the problem but did not specifically ask for a solution. i guess it was dumb of me to assume that someone would answer without an explicit question.

You had another thread, recently opened, you started October 16. I don't see where anyone responded to it, but you didn't really ask anything but if there were updates to Mach4.?

I'd suggest if you want answers, you ask an overt question. Might work better for you. Unfortunately, I can't answer them because I don't yet have Mach in any version. Just sort of following along wondering if it would do anything I need done in the future.

Of course it's not a good place, as I said the Mach devs are pretty clueless about how to organise things under Windows.

Programs like Mach4 are the answer to "Why is Windows security so shit?".

Someone should tell the Mach devs about how this new-fangled Windows stuff is supposed to work.? I mean it¡¯s only been about 30 years.

What secret?? No-one cares.

?

I¡¯ve put MRU lists into just about everything I¡¯ve ever written, and never once put in an option to clear it, nor did any one ask.? It really is a very low priority.? Hell, I remember when MRUs became the big new thing, lol.

?

People only care when you don¡¯t want your wife to see the ¡°special interest¡± videos you¡¯ve been watching, she may ask about your sudden interest in basket weaving.

?

Not surprised the MRU isn¡¯t in the registry, the Mach dev are still living in the DOS days.? Given that as before take a rummage thru the Mach4 folder, there will be some sort of setting files (,ini, .dat?) that has the list.? The modified date should be recent as it¡¯ll be edited every time you fire up Mach4.? Whether you can write a little script to modify that, who knows.

?

Wouldn¡¯t surprise me if it¡¯s tacked onto the machine settings file.

?

File a request with the Mach devs, nothing will happen but anyway.

right clicking does nothing nor can i find the files in the registry. it i a severe lack to not allow users to get rid of this garbage if they want to. i understand the fat that some people might want to keep files from external sources in the list but what about those who want to get rid of the garbage. there has to be a way to get rid of this or clear the whole cache.

Of course given the Mach devs don't have much of a clue about where you are supposed to put stuff (C;\Mach4? Sure!), their list could be anywhere, but probably in the install folder where they?dump everything else.
