Non-Mensa Politics 6
If this group is going to be just another place to debate national and other political issues with no close relationship to Mensa, I'm out of here. I'll watch for a week or two to decide and leave it up to the group's administrator(s) to decide what this group is meant to be and how to make it so. BTW, unlike Yahoo, groups.io does not seem to put the sender's/poster's name at the end of a post, so please sign your posts, including your last name. There are many Daves or Eds, for example.. Thank you. Dave Cahn Upper Marlboro, Maryland

Is this a real death due to COVID or overcounting Over counting, just like in the rest homes. https://www.gopusa.com/coroner-colorado-included-a-murder-suicide-in-grand-countys-covid-deaths/?omhide=true 2. Certain light spectrums kill COVID in the air better than others. Is there a question here? Elko Walmart had a robot that shined light on all the merchandise as it wandered the aisles. It seemed like a good idea; sterilizing everything with UV to kill coronavirus, but it turned out to be an inventory management tool to replace a couple of low-paid workers, and that wasn’t even effective, so they quit using the robot. https://www.ba-bamail.com/content.aspx?emailid=38311 3. Did you send Christmas / holiday cards this year I’m working on it! 4. Have you received any more or less cards this year than last Fewer so far, but we have a week to go. 5. Are you going to gather with family and/or friends for Christmas dinner? Just the two of us and the cats. Our usual hosts are going to have a belated XMas party this spring, god willing. Ed

Journalistic integrity 10
Not on Colbert: "But this is how Colbert brought up the Hunter Biden scandal: “You know that the people who want to make hay here in Washington are going to try to use your adult son as a cudgel against you. How do you feel about that and what do you have to say to those people?” “I’m not concerned about any accusations that have been made against him. It’s used to get to me,” Biden responded. “And he’s a grown man. He is the smartest man I know, I mean, in pure intellectual capacity. And as long as he’s good, we’re good.” Colbert kept on the topic — to try to make Biden look even more the victim. “As a father, I understand that and I admire that. But in terms of your job as president, can you reach across the aisle to people who will be using this as an attack on you when it is such a personal attack because it’s about family?” “If it benefits the country, yes. I really mean it,” Biden said, to which the fawning Colbert responded, “You’re a better man than I. I’m not sure if I could do that.”

A bit more about #3 Should school funding follow the student instead of the school? If there's reason for a student to be sent to a different school, it is most likely that it's because that school is in some way superior, and the school from which the student is being sent, is in some way deficient. Shifting funds to the better school only increases the disparity between the schools. A very bad idea. -- -- Steve Andersen I really miss having a democratic government.

1. Are you glad the Nashville bomber blew himself up? No, but I'm glad he can't harm more people. I wish he could have been removed from society before he hurt himself or anyone else. 2. Do you think more social unrest will occur next year than has happened this year? If the vaccine becomes mandatory to enable one to function in society without a vaccine passport then there will be more unrest because not all people trust it. 3. If a ventilator would probably save your life - would you want to be put on one? Of course. 4. Adverse reactions are being reported to the various COVID vaccines - what level of adverse reaction would be required before you would not take the vaccine? At this point I don't know. 5. How would you define beauty? What's beautiful to me maybe ugly to someone else. So I'm unable to answer this question. Amy

Meanwhile, China reacts
From BBC: "China meanwhile attempted to draw comparisons between the rioters who entered Congress to try and subvert the US election result and pro-democracy protesters who stormed Hong Kong's Legislative Council last year. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying claimed events in Hong Kong were more "severe" than those in Washington but "not one demonstrator died"."

Unbiased reporting from The New Yorker 3
"The House debate itself was another demonstration that, with those ten honorable exceptions, the House Republican caucus is populated with full-on Trumpers, who eagerly supported his antidemocratic crusade, and with pitiful wretches who, despite recognizing the danger Trump represents, are still too frightened to go against him.

Friday Five 2
1. What do you think of impeaching a president who is going to be out of office before a trial can be held? As Bill says - "Better late than never". Trump does have some entertainment value though. 2. Do you think the actions of January 6 were a coup attempt? Yes. 3. What has happened to you this year so far that makes you think this year will be better than the last? Two of my assistants who tested positive to the COVID virus recovered well. 4. Do you think China will invade Taiwan this year? How would I know. 5. Who do you think will be the Person of the Year for Time magazine this year? I've heard Biden has showed signs of senility in public. If he becomes senile that means Tamala Harris will become president and she will then become Time's person of the year for being the first woman president. Amy

a poem for these times
"Will you walk a little faster?" said a whiting to a snail, "There's a porpoise close behind us, and he's treading on my tail. See how eagerly the lobsters and the turtles all advance! They are waiting on the shingle—will you come and join the dance? Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join the dance? Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, won't you join the dance? "You can really have no notion how delightful it will be When they take us up and throw us, with the lobsters, out to sea!" But the snail replied "Too far, too far!" and gave a look askance— Said he thanked the whiting kindly, but he would not join the dance. Would not, could not, would not, could not, would not join the dance. Would not, could not, would not, could not, could not join the dance. "What matters it how far we go?" his scaly friend replied, "There is another shore, you know, upon the other side. The further off from England the nearer is to France— Then turn not pale, beloved snail, but come and join the dance. Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join the dance? Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, won't you join the dance?" —
