No... that would make no sense.

2.? Should government's use of weapons be restricted to the same degree as private individuals?
No, that would be stupid.

3.? ?Should a person who has been deemed mentally incompetent to be put on trial for a crime be allowed to be in a position of high authority?
Deemed is the wrong word. Someone unqualified stated their worthless opinion.

Yes, neither has much significance.

Re: Friday Five July 19

1.? Will the assassination attempt on Trump affect the election?

I feel confident, without any objective metrics to present, that it already has. It will be drawn out, spun and woven into a banner to fly both for and against Trump. How?much impact this will have is open to guessing, but I am sure it affects at least some voters.?

2.? Should government's use of weapons be restricted to the same degree as private individuals?

Like, anyone with a finger on the launch buttons must be at least 18 and have a clean record? Maybe a permit? I may not be understanding this correctly, but I feel pretty much any government weapon is handled by operators who have been trained and vetted far more than the average civilian gun owner.

3.? ?Should a person who has been deemed mentally incompetent to be put on trial for a crime be allowed to be in a position of high authority?

"Mentally incompetent" is a tricky phrase I had to deal with as a psychiatric?professional. Competence is a legal state and capacity is a medical one. It seems rational that someone who cannot understand the consequences of committing a crime would also be unable to exercise significant authority effectively, but it is not a given. Each activity has to be assessed. Thus, the person needs to be found legally incompetent?for standing?trial and?for holding the position.?

Capacity is usually situationally temporary (think a non-medicated mentally-ill patient who operated just fine after taking meds) while competence is a broader and more enduring?brush formed either due to severe?comprehensive impairment? or else it is focused on a single task (such as standing trial.) Least restrictive option. I am afraid my final answer may seem counterintuitive, but I say the person must be assessed for job performance?in said position.?

.

4.? Is Biden's Covid diagnosis of the same importance as the attempt on Trump's life?

Apples and oranges. An 81y/o male with any illness is not a situation to be taken for granted. I can say the same about getting shot?at. If we mean do they have the same political weight, I cannot say. Seems to me everything is of dramatic importance in this election!

5.? How old was Queen Isabella when she hocked her crown jewels to finance Columbus's first voyage?

Zero. I understand this never actually happened?

Yes - but exactly how is still up in the air.

2.? Should government's use of weapons be restricted to the same degree as private individuals?
Emphatically yes.

3.? ?Should a person who has been deemed mentally incompetent to be put on trial for a crime be allowed to be in a position of high authority?

I would say not but so far Biden is still enthroned - Celeste is gong to disagree.

4.? Is Biden's Covid diagnosis of the same importance as the attempt o Trump's life?

A couple of million orders of magnitude less.

5.? How old was Queen Isabella when she hocked her crown jewels to finance Columbus's first voyage?

Older than I thought - I recently read that she was born in 1474 - apparently she was born in 1451.? I;m going to have recheck my source.

1.? What was the most significant executive order ever issued by a president of the US?

FDR putting Japanese citizens in our version of concentration camps may well have been the stupidest but I think the most significant was Truman desegregating the Armed Forces in 1947

2.? Will Joe Biden drop out of the race for reelection?? I can see five alternatives.? First he is removed from office under the 25th Amendment.? Second he is removed by the party at the convention.? Third he resigns of his own accord.? Fourth he chooses to not run like LBJ in 1968.? And last and best for his legacy is that he is assassinated.

3.? Are moral codes universal?

Not at all - they vary from person to person.? Most of the time though within a small group they tend to merge.

4.?Do you expect social unrest after the US election in November?

Emphatically yes - the only question is who will be llamed.

5.? Should 4th of July fireworks be banned for being detrimental to the environment?

Insantiy rules

1.? What was the most significant executive order ever issued by a president of the US?

My first thought was, I have no idea. But answering a week late, I got to read other’s responses, all of which were worthy contenders. I will go with FDA’s interment of US citizens of Japanese heritage. I know about that horrific stamping on of constitutional rights, but I had no idea it was done by presidential executive order, I guess I always assumed Congress had passed a law to do that.

Actualy it was FDR.

2.? Will Joe Biden drop out of the race for reelection?

I don’t think Biden will drop out. Whether he should or shouldn’t I’m undecided on. But I think the Democrat Party has already invested in Biden being the next candidate, and I think they will go forward with that plan.

3.? Are moral codes universal?

Hmmm. I think ethical principles are universal. I would consider ethical principles different from moral codes, but I suspect many people would treat them the same, and I don’t want to be a language police. So I’ll just say, regardless of what they are called, maybe a general term like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—these principles are universal. But how people put them into practice or code (either by formal law or social pressure) that is definitely not universal.

4.?Do you expect social unrest after the US election in November?

If Biden wins, I expect Trump will falsely accuse him of cheating and rile up his supporters to cause social unrest.
If Trump wins, I don’t think Biden supporters will immediately cause social unrest. But once Trump starts acting like a dictator as he has promised, then I expect people being hurt by Trump’s edicts will cause social unrest (and probably many of them would be Biden supporters.)

5.? Should 4th of July fireworks be banned for being detrimental to the environment?

?

No, but perhaps better regulated. Do people really need to be putting on professional quality shows in their own backyards?

1.? Should a president be allowed to make law by executive order?

No. And my understanding is, they can’t. They can only set regulations for existing government organizations?
But that may have changed after the July 1st Supreme Court ruling, which pretty much makes the president a dictator.

2.? Will the next car or truck you buy be an EV?

Not sure. I currently have 4 vehicles, 1 my son in another city is using, but he will be returning it at some point when he buys his own vehicle (which he does plan to be EV.) Between these 4 vehicles, I plan to run them as long as they will run, so I don’t expect to buy another car for many, many years. Given how fast things change, if I don’t buy a car for the next 10 – 20 years, I can’t predict what vehicles will be like at that time. Hopefully flying!

3.? Should direction of violent illegal entrants to the US be regarded as a form of biological warfare - in that they are committing violent crimes at substantially higher rate than the average entrant?

No. 1st, illegal immigrants commit violent crimes at a lower rate than legal immigrants. Where did you get the idea that they were committing more violent crimes? It should be noted that natural born citizens commit violent crimes at far higher rates then either legal or illegal immigrants.
But even treating your question as a hypothetical and what if they were….biological warfare maybe a violent crime, but not all violent crime is biological warfare. So my answer would be no, that would make no definitional sense what you propose.

4.? Do you anticipate an imlrovement in the condition of the US is one of the two major candidates is elected president?

I think it Biden is elected, the US will continue as is, which is pretty good by almost any metric that can be looked at.
If Trump is elected president, I expect he will crown himself dictator on day 1, just as he has promised, and just as the Supreme Court has now ruled a president essentially can.

5.? Was Juian Aassange unjustly convicted?

Honestly, I’m not a lawyer and not familiar enough with the actual laws to say. I think his actions were public and he certainly did them, but did those actions meet the criteria for the laws he was convicted and/or pled guilty to? I really don’t know.

1.? What was the most significant executive order ever issued by a president of the US?

I had to look this?up. Creating the Office of Homeland Security might have been a warning sign?for times to come. I remember at the time drawing parallels to other fatherland-defending initiatives from earlier in history. I am still not convinced it was not a significant step along a dangerous path. Still, it probably does not count as all that, I guess.?

2.? Will Joe Biden drop out of the race for reelection?

I am not yet feeling a strong direction on this. It would obviously be best for him if he bowed out under protest, so maybe all the huffing and puffing is just to provide a plausible deniability in retrospect for down the road. If so, then yes. If not and he is seriously determined to torture himself for four more years, then no, he will stay the course. Not sure yet...

3.? Are moral codes universal?

Do moral codes exist for all human cultures? Probably. Is any one moral code The Answer for all cultures? Probably not.

Morals are subjective and nothing is cuter than a red-faced, righteous fanatic pointing out the evils of a differing morality.

4.?Do you expect social unrest after the US election in November?

How would the election make it go away? I suspect it will continue, yes.

5.? Should 4th of July fireworks be banned for being detrimental to the environment?

In the queue following?factory?farming, deforestation, plastic pollution, air pollution, medical waste, light pollution, water pollution, parking lots, whaling...

Re: Fridayda Five July 5

I have to agree with Celeste on the "most significant executive order." ?FDR's order to send US citizens to concentration camps based on their race was appalling, useless, and racist, and direct affected more people, but the Emancipation Proclamation is significant simply because people believe it to be more significant, even though it was purely symbolic and did not free any slaves.? Lincoln's suspension of Habeas Corpus was one of the most notorious executive orders.

1.? What was the most significant executive order ever issued by a president of the US?

FDR's order to intern people of Japanese ancestry?

2.? Will Joe Biden drop out of the race for reelection?

Yes, though his interview today with ABC may drlay it until the second debate.

3.? Are moral codes universal?

No; it's morally worse to waste water in the desert than it is in a lake district.

4.?Do you expect social unrest after the US election in November?

Probably; a lot of people will not like the outcome, whatever it is.

5.? Should 4th of July fireworks be banned for being detrimental to the environment?

We can make some exceptions for the 4th of July, though I was appalled at the smoke from Elko's $50,000 extravaganza last night for a city of 20,000.

Indian Wells must have at least 30 fireworks displays every winter that should be stopped for both safety and pollution reasons, though.

A private "gender reveal" party fireworks started a range fire in California a couple of years ago.

1.? Should a president be allowed to make law by executive order?
That's not what an executive order does. Executive orders direct a federal official or administrative agency to engage in a course of action or refrain from a course of action.

In the sense that they are biological organisms committing violent crimes including murder - they are no different from people carrying Ebola virus - merely a matter of scale

4.? Do you anticipate an improvement in the condition of the US is one of the two major candidates is elected president?

Hopefully if Trump is elected - no way if Biden is reelected.? The outlier is that neither will get a majority in the electoral college in which case a third candidate can be elected.

As an aside - what is the absolute minimum number of votes to elect a president - there are two possibilities depending on exactly how you want to read the rules

1.? Should a president be allowed to make law by executive order?

Every authoritarian king and dictator can do so, why not the president?

Checks and balances. The answer is no, although the Executive Branch should not be a puppet or powerless figurehead, either.

2.? Will the next car or truck you buy be an EV?

No. We are towing a travel trailer now, so I needed an affordable and reliable vehicle that can manage that across the country. I also wanted a vehicle that could get itself out?of trouble should?the extreme weather threaten us. We now own a used 6L GMC Sierra 4WD, Last check, it busted out a massive 9MPG!

TBF, I do not know what I will need after the pickup, so maybe? I would need a versatile and reliable vehicle, though...and affordable.

3.? Should direction of violent illegal entrants to the US be regarded as a form of biological warfare - in that they are committing violent crimes at substantially higher rate than the average entrant?

That would be silly. There is already a category for this: terrorism. Illegal immigrants who attack citizens?should be considered combatants and any legal complications encountered by defenders should be evaluated according to whether the aggressor qualifies as a terrorist.

4.? Do you anticipate an improvement in the condition of the US if one of the two major candidates is elected president?

This will improve, that will get worse, life will go on until Armageddon. Subsequent to that?life may or may not?go on. I am hoping there? will be financial improvements in the short term, but that would be a sort of minor bonus to brighten the more portentous major challenges.

5.? Was Julian Aassange unjustly convicted?

I am not sure. It seems like another spectacle. So much publicity when so many actual problems exist.
