Waymo¡¯s Golden Hour

CREDIT: POPPY LYNCH FOR WSJ

By Meghan Bobrowsky

On the streets of San Francisco these days, you¡¯re likely to come across dozens of white Jaguars with whirling sensors and cameras.

No, they aren¡¯t mapping for Google Street View, as some bystanders guessed. They¡¯re Waymo¡¯s self-driving cars and they¡¯re giving rides to tens of thousands of paying passengers every week.

Waymo¡ªowned by Google¡¯s parent, Alphabet¡ªhas become a popular mode of transportation in this city, a year after residents and local officials balked at them for stalling on busy streets and disrupting construction zones. The company has had time to improve the driverless cars, and locals have had a chance to get more comfortable with them, as .?

Waymo has also gone on a marketing blitz, promoting the privacy of its cars for date night and stuffing fortune cookies at Chinatown restaurants with app-download QR codes. And it helped that Waymo¡¯s main competitor Cruise exited the market last fall after state regulators pulled its driverless permits.

The result is that Waymo is starting to pull ahead in the robotaxi race, just as Tesla CEO Elon Musk is trying aggressively to enter the market. Last week, he unveiled plans for two new driverless vehicles¡ªa car and a shuttle bus¡ªbut they won¡¯t be operational for some time.

Meanwhile, Waymo is now setting its sights on the rest of the country. In addition to San Francisco, its robotaxi service operates in Phoenix and Los Angeles, just started giving rides in Austin, Texas, and plans to launch in Atlanta next year.

Eventually, Waymo said, it wants to take its cars overseas.

1.? Is the antipathy to Harris raical, sexual, both or neither?
That is much too vague a question. Since I don't have any antipathy toward her I would not know where to start.

2.? Will the death of Silwar (the leader of Hamas in Gaze) effect the current war?
It may affect the war if they don't have a fast replacement for him.

3. A friend asked me hose much the earth weighs.? Using only pen and paper calculate that - and state your assumptions.
I have no clues about this.

4.? what is the strangest headline you have seen this week?
I don't recall seeing any strange headlines this week. I don't see a lot of headlines.

5.? what one question would you ask your closest friend if you dared?
I don't think there's anything I haven't already asked.

Aloha,
Celeste Rogers

1.? Is the antipathy to Harris raical, sexual, both or neither?

Probably all of the above.? Personally I think she is an idiot who has slept her way to where she is and has no clue as to what to do next.

2.? Will the death of Silwar (the leader of Hamas in Gaze) effect the current war?

To some degree - it r\turns out he was found by accident but ran from the fight like a scared little child.? The drone footage of him cowering in a room and throwing a stick at the drone is pricelss.

3. A friend asked me hose much the earth weighs.? Using only pen and paper calculate that - and state your assumptions.

I assumed radius = 4000 miles = 4000 x 5280 ft.? Volumn I assumed = 2 pi radius cubed - one of my commentators corrected that.

I assumed the density was about 400 lb/CF.? The answer I got was about 6 x 10^26 power.? My commentator said a little more than six sextillion lb.

I have no idea how many zeros there are in a sixtilloin.

4.? what is the strangest headline you have seen this week

So many but probably the best is that Harris ducked the Al Smith dinner.

5.? what one question would you ask your closest friend if you dared?

Why for god's name did you marry that woman?

Re: Friday Five Octgber 18

1.? Is the antipathy to Harris racial, sexual, both or neither?

Obviously, this depends upon the person?evidencing the antipathy. I do not do absolutes, so I cannot really contribute much toward a cultural-level response?except to wonder if it depends upon the culture?being questioned? (To mclarify, I simplay cannot?consider?the U.S. population to be a culture at this time. There is just way too much variance.)

Having said that, I?am betting as an opinion that these both figure in to some of the media spouting.

2.? Will the death of Silwar (the leader of Hamas in Gaze) effect the current war?

Yes, but the real ceasefire option is to return the remaining?hostages and offer a formal statement of remorse for the October 7th attacks. I expect this death is a feather that might smooth the path toward an Israeli declaration of success, but not if it leaves 90-odd citizen hostages unaccounted for.

3. A friend asked me how much the earth weighs.? Using only pen and paper calculate that - and state your assumptions.

What is pen and paper?

I Googled:??"Earth weighs about?13,170,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 pounds?(or 5,974,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 kilograms). Since Earth is too big to be placed on a scale, scientists use mathematics and the laws of gravity to figure out Earth's weight." --?.

That is my contribution. I am not even sure I have the math or physics to actually do that using my own personal resources. Hopefully the planet's suspension is up to supporting the weight! (My pickup is rated to 12,000 lbs, I think...that is the level?I think on!)

4.? What is the strangest headline you have seen this week?

Siri tried to route us through the Rockies on the coming Saturday during a predicted snowstorm that will dump up to 4 feet along the route. The weather headline announcing this to me sticks. I don't remember any others even though I scan news daily?online.?

5.? What one question would you ask your closest friend if you dared?

I am bad at this stuff. Not social enough. I am noted for not even asking common , obvious, socially standard questions of people. I cannot think of a question I would ask and I don't really have a "closest friend." Were I to ask aquaintences, I might ask about issues related to common social problems if I thought the person might have a significant opinion or input.

1.? What do you think will be or was the October Surprise in the presidential election?

A bunch of candidates - the two hurricanes and the federal response, the latest indictment of Trump, the horrible mouth running of Walz, Harris's word salads.

2.? Would you ride in a robot taxi?

Already have - people movers at SeaTac airport.? The difference is they were not on public roads.? I think robotaxis are useful when they are running on fixed routes - I'm not sure about taxis that go to passenger designated destinations.

3.? Did FEMA act appropriately in North Carolina?

Emphatically not - more than anythihg else their behavior indicates FEMA needs to be abolished - it is one more excuse for bureaucrats to dither.

4.? Do you think that either presidential candidate will receive more than 300 electoral votes?

A week ago I would have said no - now I think there is an even chance.

5.? Will this presidential election be contested in court?

Probably better than a 90% chance.
