¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIt turned out to be not much of a thing for Oahu. In fact we had our Mensa Hawaii Annual Beach Party yesterday. It didn't even rain at the beach that I had chosen for it. We barbecued and enjoyed the day.Aloha, Celeste On 8/25/2024 2:10 AM, Darrell King

My responses have the?questions in them! In case you ever need them again... The Middle East may not last a hundred more years, but I certainly hope the combined navies of so many nations can take control of one little canal. Of course, that would be expensive, so it would probably be less costly to invade Iran for real and extract the cost from the conquered. Or we could try a sane approach and all convert to Islam en masse, totally deflating the entire shared Special Purpose of the terrorist?groups. Sun Tzu: "All warfare is based on deception" and "The greatest victory is that which requires no battle." Other than that, I am out of ideas. This probably does not bode well for the Western World, but I will try to brainstorm. D On Sat, Aug 24, 2024 at 8:29?PM mrvnchpmn via <chapman=[email protected]> wrote:

Friday Five answers August 23 I lost the questions
1.? This one is from a contributor.? I think the answer is a question of degree - I am more suspicious of entities that I can not engage with and even more with ones that I suspect are created out of whole cloth.
2.? The question really is what information is available and whether or not any individual is allowed to use that knowledge to make decisions.? This one comes from a book I am reading where the theory was posited that denying employers the ability to look at criminal records means certain groups of people are unfairly excluded because there is a higher rate of criminal convictions within that group.? In this instance lack of information drives prejudice. 3.? RFK dropping out is probably going to help Trump but not as much as it would if all Kennedy voters went for Trump.? A certain proportion are going to go for Harris and probably a higher proportion are either going to writein a third party candidate or just not cast a vote. 4.? Can't remember the question. 5.? After looking at replies - I think the Middle East and all the associated problems are going to be the center of attention for the next hundred years.? Apparently the Houthis have won their war - even the Russians are avoiding the Suez Canal. |

No, it isn't because there isn't enough information about them. Information can be anything and not necessarily true. Prejudice is rarely based on anything true. Not sure there's a relationship. Re: Friday Five August 23
1.? Is it possible to think deeply about people who exist only as abstractions / news accounts? No. 2.? What is the relationship between information?and prejudice? Information leads to prejudice, ?Eventually information can also change or eliminate prejudice. 3.? If RFK comes out for Trump - will that effect the election? Possibly; it's hard to draw a bead on RFK supporters, since it's hard to find consistency in RFK's message.? However, the country is so finely divided, that it's possible that a swing state may shift either way in the end because of what RFK does. 4.? Did you watch any / all of the Democratic National Convention? I watched Bill Clinton for a little while, but the rest of it, including the commentary was pretty shallow. 5.? What do you think is the most urgent situation in the world today? The wars in Ukraine and Gaza. On Fri, Aug 23, 2024 at 7:22?AM mrvnchpmn via <chapman=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: Friday Five August 23
1.? Is it possible to think deeply about people who exist only as abstractions / news accounts? The term "think deeply" is probably going to be interpreted with significant subjectivity by everyone answering (else?maybe I am just thinking too deeply about this) but I think yes. The mind represents everything via symbols and so we actually think not about the person but about our symbol, or idea, of the person. So, since we can create symbols of abstracts as easily as those assigned to any living being, why?not? 2.? What is the relationship between information?and prejudice? Depends upon the thinker. I want to say that information alleviates prejudice, but since we each interpret information in our own way and sinec we each cherish our declared stances, resisting change?to them, I suspect I would be a bit optimistic to expect critical thinking to override prejudice. 3.? If RFK comes out for Trump - will that affect the election? I suspect so. The points are already close and RFK will likely?add more to Trump than to Harris. 4.? Did you watch any / all of the Democratic National Convention? Nope. I just grab snapshots from?the online news. More efficient?use of my time. I am not really moved by the drama. 5.? What do you think is the most urgent situation in the world today? Using what criteria? There are several that seem equally pressing to me. I feel weather extremes are scary huge threats as they are not to be reasoned with. They just blow through without caring for consequences! Nuclear saber rattling has at least some small chance of being impacted by common sense. Of course, disease threats are no more concerned with my comfort than weather threats, but they seem more vulnerable to human?intervention through such actions as isolation and medical responses. Social unrest is similar to political posturing in that human morality, feeling and social response has some chance of mitigating the behaviors. All in all, I think the most urgent designation depends?upon today's events and my mood. I also have a short somewhere?in the clearance light circuit on my RV and that is likely to be very tedious to resolve... |

Responding to the last 3 3 no effect? 4 happened to watch the aging Clinton who actually sounded like Trump :-) would not watch any convention, but was in an African restaurant. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI have not read any books recently (other than textbooks). Yes. Either that or eliminate the minimum wage difference for service jobs. I'm not aware of the Federal Government subsidizing any bad behavior. This "question" is just a vague statement about something. No. Cash is still king when hitting the nightclubs. Re: Friday Five August 16
1.? What was the one book you recently read that most impressed you? Total blank. I have not been reading many books, though, except for an hour at bedtime with Kindle Unlimited's loan-library collection. Currently the Spellmonger series. 2.? Should tips be taxed as income? Depends upon whether the overall employment arrangement matches the?fair income for the job as averaged across the social board? If the base paid earnings are ridiculously small and untaxed tip averages are used as justification for that, then no. If the base pay is competitive?and?the tips are more like commission opportunities, then why not? 3.? Should the Federal Government get out of the business of subsidizing bad behaviour? Huh? I am sure this is obvious? Unless, of course, the government is intentionally stimulating such for some obscure purpose... 4.? Should currency be abolished - if so what should it be replaced with? I do not think it is time yet, but I am betting it will fade away and be replaced with digitized?credit accounts. Cheaper and easier for the top powers to track.
5.? ?Who is/was your favorite author? From childhood, Robert E Howard enthralled me. I was poor and had little in the way of belongings or prospects, but he wrote of men making their way with nothing but their inherent physical and mental resources. |

Vanished Kngdoms by Norman davies 2.? Should tips be taxed as income? Income should not be taxed - tax consumption with a minimum exemption 3.? Should the Federal Government get out of the business of subsidizing bad behaviour? The federal Government should not subsidize anythihg 4.? Should currency be abolished - if so what should it be replaced with? This is aimed at the idea of all transactions beig electronic - which is a horrible idea not only because it is hackable but it also gives government too much control over our lives 5.? ?Who is/was your favorite author? For one book Ayn Rand, for many books Isaac Asimov |
Re: [Owner] Re: [PhilosophicalM] Friday Five August 16
? Me: "I have no idea what you are referring to, but don't see any reason for the federal government should do that." Marvin: "I was thinking of stupid stuff like buying bigger houses on largedr lots because mortgage interest in deductible" Now that you mention it, I just read a column this morning describing how the Bank of Japan is offering negative interest rates to encourage borrowing (and hopefully resulting in business investment to drag them out of 30 years of economic stagnation). ? Arbitragers are borrowing money from Japan at negative interest rates and using those funds to buy US government securities at 5.25% or so and making a killing.? No one knows how large this shadow market is, or how much it's costing the USA (and Japan), but some estimates are over a trillion dollars. On Fri, Aug 16, 2024 at 5:42?AM <chapman@...> wrote:
