Re: Friday Five April 29

I am typically happy to give my opinion on any question?you present about any question Marvin presents, Amy! I did not follow the news much at all either, until Covid. It was January 2020 when I first got sick with what I assumed was the seasonal flu. I so rarely got sick that I considered maybe the flu was a worse strain than usual that season. I am a nurse and so I Googled for any related information, thinking I could warn my patients in the community.?

A small blurb about a coronavirus in some distant place named Wuhan in China?caught my attention in the first page of results. With my professional training, I saw a disturbing pattern to the spread of the sickness there and I made a note to myself that we would hear more about this particular disease in the coming months. I also found no references to any special virulence in the seasonal flu in the U.S., so I wrote my personal sickness off to some increasing vulnerability from aging as this was before any reports of Covid reaching the U.S. I remember thinking pneumonia must feel like what I had as I felt like someone was sitting on my chest.

Over the next couple-three months, I followed the brief coverage of the Chinese?outbreak as it moved from Googled references to mainstream media. This was my indoctrination into media news coverage?and I used television and internet sources?to scan multiple takes on the expanding viral spread. I told family and friends it would reach out globally based on what I was seeing. I was right, of course. I also predicted social unrest, economic trauma, supply chain breakdowns and healthcare system overwhelms before they happened because the patterns evident behind the multiple media spins were obvious to me.

Before all this, I rarely bothered with the news. I considered the various popular media shows to be disguised reality TV entertainment intended to gain ratings and make profits.I have not changed that opinion much, but now I make use of them, along with other resources, to build a composite picture of where we might be headed so I can be prepared. As my answers to the questions might hint, I am not seeing anything good. Too many independent references to major landscapes?of melting ice (I think Thwaites will go this?year.) Too many natural?disasters of record-setting proportions across too broad a global landscape to call to all?an unfortunate coincidence. Too many incidents of unprecedented social unrest in long-stable societies (when was the last time the White House was stormed?again?) Too many economic pressures resulting in increasingly unstable economies to ignore.

One or another, the various patterns might strike me as an unusual accent to the ponderous march of workaday human life. In aggregate, though, I see a gathering avalanche of significant pressures hammering at social constructions not designed to endure the trauma. I see too many bursts of unanswered social chaos, a widespread pattern of small explosions of violence and criminal defiance that are freely defying legal structures. Too many unstoppable new outbreaks of disease, including Covid mutations, too many governmental?sabers rattled, too many new tornado patterns, hurricane disasters, wildfire outbreaks, floods and droughts. Times, they are a-changing?and I am making what I consider to be prudent changes based on this observation.

So, maybe news is not really a happy place to spend time, but it does have a use if you scrutinize it judiciously.

No problem - an answer of I don't know anything about that tells me you read it.

And sometimes it gives me an idea for a different question.

I think worse in the generally accepted meaning of the term. Of course, I am older now and I just worked in a nursing home during a pandemic, so I don't have much confidence in my socially-secured future care. 3. ?Do you think you will be better or worse off in twelve months?

4. ? Have you seen shortages of commodities in stores recently?

5 ? ?What was your favorite cartoon character growing up?

1.? Who do you think is the most interesting political figure in the world today?

Not the obvious one - but the current mayor of New York? - Eric Adams.? This is his first political office after serving as a police officer all the way up to the Police Cojmmisioner

2.? ?Who do you think is the most incompetent political figure in the world today?

Probably the obvious even though it is going to tick off some of my readers - Joe Biden.? Though Alexandria Ocasio Cortez - known as AOC comes in a close second.

3.? Do you think you will be better or worse off in twelve months?

Worse off - the value of my savings is going to go down by at least ten percent if not more

4.? ?Have you seen shortages of commodities in stores recently?

I saw at a local drug store Wednesday that their drivethough is only open six hours a day because of inventory problems.? Not a good sign

5? ? What was your favorite cartoon character growing up?

Bugs Bunny?

1.? Who do you think is the most ineffective world leader at the present time?

Well, then. Truthfully, I am not impressed with anyone right now, with the possible exception of?Zelenskyy. I do not have a clear answer for this as it seems they are all stumbling about in the dark.

2.? What current world leader would you like to spend an hour with without tenders?

Maybe Zalenskyy, but mostlyI am not much attracted by this idea.?

3.? Is Ukraine going to survive the Russian invasion as a viable country?

If the?war comes to a?diplomatic solution, I think so based on the amount of media exposure. If not, then Russia will likely turn the place into a wasteland through the use of overwhelming numbers of conventional arms and WMD. There is a tiny possible?avenue of effective military action if Ukraine pushed into Russia, but that seems unlikely now. Despite a couple of impressive victories, they are fighting a defensive war and attrition is not on their side.

4.? Does the current world political situation remind you of any books you have read?

A few ApoCalyptic fiction novels.?

4.? Are you watching the French presidential election campaign?

I am not.?

Re: [m-scholars-and-scribes] Friday Five April 22

I love de 5's

1.? Who do you think is the most ineffective world leader at the present time?
It depends on who's considered as a "world" leader (none at this moment), and "effectiveness". Local leaders I don't know many, but they are usually effective to their own goals (that don't necessarily meet those of their countries' or people's)

2.? What current world leader would you like to spend an hour with without tenders?
I'm not sure. Most rely on their counselor's so I'm not sure what's the use of talking only to any of them.

3.? Is Ukraine going to survive the Russian invasion as a viable country?
Propably not.

4.? Does the current world political situation remind you of any books you have read?
Most distopian futuristic scifi starts with a local "little" invasion war, where nobody else mingles in? until it's too late, sort of WWII.

4.? Are you watching the French presidential election campaign?
No. ?Why?

1.? Do you have a hard time differentiating betwen homonyms in speech?

Surprisingly no.

?

2.? Do you think members of a non official military group engaging in warfare should have the protection of the Geneva Convention?

Yes, but the non-official military group should also be prosecuted as war criminals if they commit war crimes against the Geneva Convention. Even if they aren’t technically signatories of the Geneva Convention, it seems the best rules we currently have for war engagement, and I think everyone should be required to follow them.

3.? Should Finland and Sweden join NATO?

Yes. Although I’m certain that even without being NATO members, they would receive all kinds of aid and help from NATO, just as Ukraine is receiving.

4.? Should destruction of wheat in Ukraine be regarded as another war crime by Russian forces?

Yes, I think it should, especially since it will affect so many other countries and potentially cause starvation. Whether or not it actually qualifies as a war crime under the Geneva Convention, I don’t know.

5.? Should the subway shooting in Brooklyn Tuesday be regarded as a terrorist attack?

Yes. I think terrorism has lost its mean a bit due to overuse, but given current usage of terrorism, it is fair to call the subway shooter a terrorist.

<< The Executioner?s Song by Norman Mailer. Also Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes.>>

I read Executioner’s Song in 7th grade. It was pretty weighty ready, I’m not sure why I picked it out. At that age I would browse the local bookstore and buy books that sounded interested, and they would run the gamut from typical teenage romance novels to very weighty novels. It took me a couple of weeks to finish reading it, and a friend made fun of me that it took so long for me to read it. This friend only read typical 120 page teen romance novels, so couldn’t comprehend such a weighty novel. The Executioner’s Song is one of the rare books that I still think about, even now decades after reading it.

I also read Flowers for Algernon in 8th grade, and that one didn’t stick with me. I only vaguely remember what it was about.

1. What one book have you been reading lately that most impressed you?

?

Life is so busy now, I read very little. Maybe 2 or 3 books a year. And the past few I’ve read have been mediocre. I do still read the Bible once or twice a week, so I’m still impressed by it.

2. Can you depend on your ability to tell when someone is lying to you?

?

No. I’m not a good reader of people, which tends to make me automatically distrust everyone. Some people make lying obvious with outlandish tales, but good liars are extremely hard to detect.

?

3. Have you been to a movie in a theater in the last year?

?

Nope. I didn’t go much before COVID, maybe once or twice a year. I saw 1 movie in the theater in 2019.

?

4. Do you think the world economy will be in recession within six months?

?

Isn’t the world economy already in recession? I guess it depends on how recession is defined. ?I expect the economy worldwide will get worse before it gets better.

5. Are you worried that the war in Ukraine will spread to more countries?

?

Well, it is a concern. I’m not overly worried about it, as I don’t think its imminent.

1.? Do you have a hard time differentiating betwen homonyms in speech?

No. Reading and verbal comprehension is a strength. Unfortunately upper range hearing has become a challenge as I age, but if I hear the word in use, I always seem to identify the intended meaning.?

2.? Do you think members of a non official military group engaging in warfare should have the protection of the Geneva Convention?

Ouch. Depends upon the engagement? I could see a force assisting an invader as deserving?it, or a force resisting abusive aggression, yet maybe not a rogue mercenary group living off the land or a special interest security unit carving profit from an area. Erring on the side of caution, I would say no.

3.? Should Finland and Sweden join NATO?

Yes. Unifying political military strategies can lead to less chaotic and violent problem resolution. Divisive paths open doors for rogue aggressors.?

4.? Should destruction of wheat in Ukraine be regarded as another war crime by Russian forces?

Probably not likely, but I can see the attraction of the charge. If it can be proven the move was intended to target uninvolved civilians as a strategy, maybe but scorched earth strategies are well established 'valid strategies' in warfare.

5.? Should the subway shooting in Brooklyn Tuesday be regarded as a terrorist attack?

If the motivation?uncovered is political or cause-driven, definitely. Otherwide, I would ask if we should classify every mass-casualty crime as terrorist?

I use context to determine whether a person was saying "read", "reed" or "Reid"

2.? Do you think members of a non official military group engaging in warfare should have the protection of the Geneva Convention?

Ab solutely NOT

3.? Should Finland and Sweden join NATO?

If they want to - Putin has shot himself in the foot

4.? Should destruction of wheat in Ukraine be regarded as another war crime by Russian forces?

Yes - it is a repeat of Stalin's actions against the Kulaks in the 1930s - but has the potential to kill people by starvation worldwide

5.? Should the subway shooting in Brooklyn Tuesday be regarded as a terrorist attack?

Yes - the individual has? been charged under a federal terrorist statute.? I think eventually he will be found incompetent to be put on trial for mental defect
