Losmandy GM8/GM11 Encoder Kit

Have anyone tried the encoder kit??

I recently bought a G11G. I wonder if the encoder kit will improve the guiding performance. I'd appreciate it if anyone shares some experiences. Thanks.

Mengnan - I believe those encoders are used with DSC devices for visual push to capabilities. I don't believe those are accurate enough to assist in ap guiding. There exist more accurate ones, but they cost significantly more.?

Hi Mengan,

These encoders are for use with a digital setting circles computer. They cannot be used for guiding.?

If you have a guiding issue please post what you are using and what the problem looks like and we'll be happy the help.

Yes, I recently installed them on my G11G, but only so the mount would ¡°know¡± it¡¯s position after a push-to. They work just fine for that, but don¡¯t in any way interact with the standard encoders that came with the mount. They do nothing at all to aid in guiding performance.?

This type of encoders are great for turning manual Alt-Az mounts or even dobsonians into semi-goto systems.? For a GEM, once you have goto capability its cost and hassle is hard to justify. OTOH, a retrofitting kit for turning the G11G2 into a G11G-EC would be great!!

Best regards,
Daniel

INA is a Chinese firm. Seems to be in the digital measurement?space.?

How do you read,?2 x encoders (311,296 steps)? I'd sure like to read the "installation instruction booklet" before I laid out the cash.

Virus-free.

Daniel,

As much as I like the Losmandy Gemini 2 mini on the G11G and GM8G as well as the previous Gemini 2 and Gemini 1 GOTO controllers on previous Losmandy mounts I have owned there is nothing? quit as satisfying as being out under a dark sky picking an object then using the Nexus DSC and/or Sky Safari to help locate an object in the eyepiece as the Losmandy mounts were designed to be used, PUSH-TO operation. Think of it like this: GOTO operation = Blasters, PUSH-TO operation = Lightsabers. A lot is lost when all you do is push a button and look at objects without working a little to find and learn about an object.?

The 311K encoders are pretty good when used with a Nexus DSC. You cannot move the mount by hand fast enough to over run the Nexus DSC, I tried it clutches fully loos with an epmty saddle on the GM8G, I yanked the CW shaft as fast as I could and no errors happend! Apparently the port sample rate is high enough to never miss an increment. The newer Nexus DSC Pro is even faster @ 100 million tics per second. So I guess the Nexus DSCs are fast enough even with what appear to be a pretty high tic count.?

Good analogy!? Goto operation certainly loses most of the magic for visual observing, but then, IMHO the real experience is not a DSC equipped GEM, but an alt-az mount with no encoders, no polar align, nothing but old-skool star hopping !??
