G11T Questions

Hi,
I'm new to the group and getting ready to buy a new G11T and have a few questions;
1) Wanted to confirm that the included Gemini 2 is shipping with the L6 or is it still an add on?
2) It will be pier mounted. Is the MAL adaptor required or is there a single ~1/2" hole at the bottom of the mount to screw directly into my existing top pier plate?
3) My OTA is a SVX130T refractor that weighs approx 39 lbs (17.5kg). Do I need additional counter weights and if so which ones would you recommend?
4) I have a PPL Eagle5 mounted on top of the scope. It handles all of my power and computing needs for my current set up of a ZWO AM5 mount and NINA. I'm not relishing the idea of learning a new computer system. Can I quickly set up to use the Eagle5 with NINA and then incorporate Gemini as needed later on? And if so which settings would you recommend in the Gemini driver to start off with?
Thanks for any help,
Frank

Frank,

Question #2,? The MAL has a 1/2" hole in the center, then about six or eight 5/16 or 3/8" holes around the edge.? You will need it as the mount sits inside and is fastened by screws from the side.

Question #3,? I would get 35 - 40 pounds of weight, 20lb, 10lb and a 5lb - 7lb. ? Put the 20 and 10 close to the top, use the smallest weight as the lowest on the bar to dial in the balance.? Best for tracking.? If imaging, and using a guide scope do not forget to add that weight too. Guide scope, rings mounting bracket..it all adds up.? OAG is best and no real weight.

My question to you is,? is the Stellarvue SVX130T going to be your largest, heaviest, longest focal length scope you will use??? Reason I ask,? did you consider a G11G??? About 10 pounds less capacity, 60 or 65 pound capacity, photographic.? G11G has spring loaded gears in both axis, the G11T only Dec. ?? The G11T does have a bigger RA gear and comes standard with what would be extra on the G11G.? I'm thinking, availability to split in half, Dec / RA, clutch knobs, knobs to adjust azimuth when polar aligning.

I bought a G11T 4 years ago, thinking I needed it for a big scope, well I got rid of that big scope and did not need the extra weight capacity. ? G11T is a great mount, still in service today in a portable setting. set up tear down every night. Kind of anyway, it is on wheels, so it is just roll out / roll in.

Another thing I'd like to add is the Losmandy power supply, 15vdc., ? Gemini 2 likes the extra 3 volts. Get the dedicated power supply.

I cannot answer question #1 or #4.

In the under $5000 budget,? Losmandy makes the best mount out there, total package.? Dependable, durable, repeatable, customer service and customer support.

Just my thoughts, views and experiences, ? Joe?

Hi Joe,
Thank you for your information!
The G11T will be permanantly mounted on the pier. I live in B-4 so no reason to take it anywhere else. Are you saying that the G11G is better only because it is easier to break down after a session, or are is it a better mount overall??
While I do not have any plans right now for a heavier scope, that might change in the future. Again, I do not need a portable mount. I will use the ZWO AM5 I already have for our SVX90T for travel if needed.
Thanks for the CW recommendations. This way I can order them at the same time as the mount.?
Do you know if Losmandy prefers the online ordering or by direct phone call?
Frank

Hey Frank,

The ONLY reason I mentioned the G11G was because of the spring loaded worm blocks on BOTH the RA and Dec vs the G11T only has the Dec spring loaded.? Theoretically less maintenance, basically you do not have to adjust spring loaded worm blocks. Very rare that you do.? The G11T will need adjustment at sometime, will not need it often but will need it.? Ask around, owners of G11T's, like I said it is not done often but it is done.

When I bought my G11T four years ago, it came standard with the Dec separating from the RA, may be option for G11G, the G11T came standard with the better clutch knobs.

The G11T does give you more weight capacity, 10 or 15 pounds more.

As a customer, I prefer to call and talk to the manufacturer if I can, with Losmandy you can,? I would call, tell them your needs, scopes you plan to use, counter weights,? remote observatory, spring loaded worms vs not spring loaded,? remote operation / power interuption, etc.? That way you fit the mount to your needs.

Just me, which ever mount you chose, get the 120 volt power supply, Gemini 2 likes the 15 volts DC.

Is your observatory in your backyard or do you have to drive to it???? Talk to Losmandy and try to find owners that have observatories like yourself,? how is it in operation??? What about power outage, power goes off for whatever reason, how to reset / resume??

The thing you are looking for is trouble free from all angles.

Joe

Hi Joe,
I'm not much of a tinkerer, but if it only needs service on rare occasions and there is a University Of YouTube tutorial I should be good to go.

This mount will be covered on my backyard pier 24/7/365. I hope to never move it off the pier.

More weight capacity the better. I do not like operating on the margins.

My PPL Eagle5 mounted on the scope is shore powered and has direct ethernet wifi connection from the house. The house has solar and battery back up so any power outage would be a loose cable at the mount. The Eagle5 has (2) 8 amp and (2) 3 amp power outs which I'm told by PPL will power any commercial mount available. But I will keep an eye on that and confirm with Losmandy that is enough. If not, an additional power brick is easy to plug in directly into the pier power outlet.

I'll call Losmandy tomorrow and place the order and ask about any additional questions.

Thank you for your help Joe.
