Bearings
Hello all!
Summer is quickly approaching and with it too bright nights here for observing. But not for tinkering :) I'm been tinkering some with my mount, and I was thinking of at one point in time try to upgrade my bearings. Now, what is recommended here are bearings sold by McMaster-Carr. Well, they do not ship to Europe - there are some export regulations. So I'm a bit at loss. Of course, living in the country where ball bearings were invented (:)), there are of course high quality stuff here. But in millimeters.... so I'm a bit lost in dimension and quality stuff. I've found some of the right dimension produced in China, but I am quite uncertain about the quality. So: would anyone of you know of a place in Europe where I can order bearings of the right dimensions? We're talking a G11 here. Or: if anyone of you living in the US is going to order from McMaster-Carr - would you consider ordering a few extras and sell to me? :) Private selling would not be stopped by export regulations, I believe.... Best, Magnus |

I don't know off hand if there are any European suppliers of R4ZZ bearings (>= ABEC5), but it looks like Boca Bearings (where I got some of mine) on EBAY appear to ship to Sweden (assumption based on your name).? I have some ABEC7 from McMaster Carr that I have yet to try, but when I rotate in hand, they don't feel as smooth as the ABEC5 from Boca that were the best of my lot (better than some ABEC7).? If you are going to order, I would order more than you need, and pick the best ones.

Hi Magnus,
I have to ask, why not order from Losmandy and get the exact correct bearings? And if you ask real nice, maybe Brian or Tanya could plain wrap them to make it look like a private mail package. I don't think some bearings would cause an International incident. LOL! Aren't SKF a German brand? Nope Swedish, answered my own question. I've installed a ton of SKF, and FAG, bearings in my lifetime. When you are looking for higher quality bearings, Electric Motor Grade are usually pretty high up, or were. Grade 2 out of a 1-10 scale. PS: I wouldn't order a bag of manure from China. No telling what shi-tuff they'd put in it. And I know their manufacturing is garbage. -- SonnyE (I suggest viewed in full screen) |
开云体育Hi! Good idea! (to ask Losmandy) Actually, did not even think of it.... Sonny, you got me there, almost got a fit... SKF is soo Swedish
:) almost an international incident, giving them away to
Germany... :) Yes, I find SKF-stuff, just want to be sure that I get what you
guys have experience of. And in inches....Thanks, knew nothing of
Electric Motor Grade.

Hi Magnus, |
Hi Magnus,
I use to buy ABEC5 when I was roller blading. You can find them anywhere in Europe I believe, at least in Switzerland they are very easy to find. Now dimensions is another thing, imperial are hard to find and expensive. For imperial, best bet you could try to show up in a Harley Davison work shop and ask them if would sell any spares. A friend of mine did and it worked ;-) Cheers, Carl |
开云体育Hi! Well, given the age of my mount (more than 10 years), I'm
thinking that maybe the Losmandy gears sold today is "good
enough"? But I'm very far from an expert on bearing quality - just
thinking that it might be worth a try to test what could be
expected to be high quality, not worn down, could do to my mount.
Following my normal procedure, I'd proably try and get a pair
from Losmandy and then some 3rd party and test them all. I'm not
in a hurry :) And there is other testing that comes first, anyway.
Actually, it seems that I could get some Koyo Ezo (?) bearings,
labelled "EE 2 2RS (R4 2RS)" from a Swedish supplier, in imperial
dimensions (1/4" ID, 5/8" OD)! Rings a bell for anyone? SKF, though, only has millimeter... Magnus

How is it an 'upgrade' (as you stated as the goal) if you buy the same stock part from Losmandy that you already have? 'Tinkering' typically implies 3rd-party. |

Those look to be the right dimensions; the 'R' stands for rubber seals, which I'm not sure if anyone has tried here, or could offer a conjecture as to the effect of the seal (I cannot).? All I know is that a comparison of bearings is very difficult to do in a quantifiable way since you change many variables through the very act of changing the bearings.? That said, I have had bad bearings (despite being brand new ABEC7) that performed poorly, meaning spiky performance that was too quick to guide out (slow PE is easy to deal with).? Finding the right ones was key for me with my G11, and seemed to be correlated to how they felt holding the bearing while rotating by hand.? But again, this was not very scientific.

Apparently you are of little faith in Scott's careful quality assurance. I've been there, and picked up my mount personally from his business. The man himself put my HD tripod in the box for me to bring it home, while I steadied the box. (At 35 pounds, Tanya ask him if he would put it in the box as she felt it was a little heavy for her. She is a small woman.) Show me any other manufacturing CEO/Owner who gives such a level of service. He was personally assembling and checking a new side by side mount for a repeat customer while we chatted and I met the folks there. And tinkering usually implies an Owner doing his own chosen work. And considering Chinese bearings is flat out an abomination of any sort of quality and certainly not any form of an upgrade to anything. So I was steering Magnus back to where he has the assurance of getting the highest quality of bearing for his mount. And the best likelihood of flying them under the radar. ? -- SonnyE (I suggest viewed in full screen) |

Rings a bell for anyone?Rings an alarm bell for me, Magnus. I do not believe there are any sort of rubber seals in Losmandy caged needle bearings used in Scott's mount. And the dimensions you give don't sound right at all. Where exactly are you looking at putting these bearings? I got the impression you wanted to change . Here is a picture:? What you have presented might possibly be in the worm gear area. Here are the ones :? They appear shielded, but not with rubber seals. If possible, I'd recommend you call Losmandy, and request to speak with Scott, but Tanya knows a lot about the parts as well. So she might be able to answer your questions, and deduce what bearings you would like. And due to the time differences, it might be best to write them on the form. I've used 2RS bearings in small electric motor rebuilds. I'm just not sure a 2RS bearing would be an improvement for the worm area, as it is possible it could cause an overload condition to the small drive motors, or the gear reduction drive. And having to buy one of those would really negate any improvements you might see in "improved" bearings. are not my idea of inexpensive compared to getting the bearings Scott has already proven to work well for his equipment. Incidentally, the industry standard for Electric Motor Bearings is a 10 year lifespan. ? -- SonnyE (I suggest viewed in full screen) |
