How is it an 'upgrade' (as you stated as the goal) if you buy the same stock part from Losmandy that you already have? 'Tinkering' typically implies 3rd-party.
Keith,
How is reinventing the wheel going to be an improvement over 44 years of Scott Losmandy's experience? Do you put your name on sub-standard work?
Apparently you are of little faith in Scott's careful quality assurance. I've been there, and picked up my mount personally from his business.
The man himself put my HD tripod in the box for me to bring it home, while I steadied the box. (At 35 pounds, Tanya ask him if he would put it in the box as she felt it was a little heavy for her. She is a small woman.)
Show me any other manufacturing CEO/Owner who gives such a level of service. He was personally assembling and checking a new side by side mount for a repeat customer while we chatted and I met the folks there.
And tinkering usually implies an Owner doing his own chosen work.
And considering Chinese bearings is flat out an abomination of any sort of quality and certainly not any form of an upgrade to anything.
So I was steering Magnus back to where he has the assurance of getting the highest quality of bearing for his mount. And the best likelihood of flying them under the radar.
