Adding grease to existing greased worm and wheel
I have just finished taking out the backlash from my 1992 steel wormed CG11.? I had the gearbox off and the Oldham connector.? During this process I removed a small amount of lube from the bearings (reduced to thick guck) and from the steel worm gear.? Now it is all back together I see that the worms and gears assemblies? look a bit under lubricated.? I do not wish to dismantle the whole thing and clean off the old worm grease.? I would rather add a small amount of lube to what's already there.? Questions, what?
I quite like white lithium grease but am reluctant to mix it with what has already been doing a fine job since 1992. What product do I use on the worms please. Thanks. Pete |
please do NOT use lithium grease.? we use arctic lube here at the shop, and many others use superlube On Tue, Jul 6, 2021 at 11:11 AM Pete <pete.ingram@...> wrote: I have just finished taking out the backlash from my 1992 steel wormed CG11.? 开云体育I recently switched from super lube to moly based CRC brake and
caliper lube.? The moly based stuff, to my senses, handles higher
friction loads considerably better.? I am using custom spring
loaded worms that have constant pressure, and no back-off bolt
like the OEM SLW has.? Due to the constant pressure of the spring,
I felt the super lube wasnt robust enough to stay in place over
time.? However with a stock 2-piece worm block and static mesh, super lube is cheap, readily available, and has been proven to work well across many many mounts.? I'd also suggest steering clear of lithium grease. Good luck, On 7/6/2021 2:11 PM, Pete wrote:

Hello, I have done a study of the available greases. Here is the data: 4-ball test coeff of friction: CRC Brake and Caliper grease 4 ball wear scar 0.6 mm Timken load 60 lbs Copper corrosion 1B (shiny 100C 24 hr test) Arctic Jetlube recommended by Losmandy Max weld 200 Load index 25 4 ball Wear scar 0.7 mm Superlube with Syncolon ptfe 4 ball Wear scar 1.0 mm Timken load 40 lbs Copper corrosion 1B shiny 100C 24 hr test Super lube high temp and pressure grease 4 ball Wear scar 1.0 mm Timken load 50 lbs Copper corrosion 1B shiny 100C 24 hr test Shell AeroShell 33 (no MolyD) uses lithium.?? Copper corrosion 1B ( shiny 100C 24 hr test) No data on 4 ball test. Shell AeroShell 33 MD (with MolyD) uses lithium.?? Copper corrosion 1B ( shiny 100C 24 hr test) No data on 4 ball test. ____ Conclusion: CRC Brake and Caliper grease has MolyD, Graphite, and Teflon. It has the highest Timken bearing result (60lbs) and shortest 4 ball test result (0.6mm).?? Experience: ?on the G11T (titan RA): ?Super lube showed "chattering" in one worm direction rotation.? CRC Brake and Caliper grease showed no chatter.?Others protect told me of better results on their G11 with the CRC than Super lube. I bought but did not try the Arctic jetlube.? So... I recommend you use a cotton cloth to wipe out the existing lube, and put in the CRC Brake and Caliper grease.? Here is a picture of the container. The top lid has a brush to apply the grease.? It has antocorrosion ingredients that prevent damage to the brass worm in case you were to get a worm upgrade. Best regards, Michael ? Thank you all for your input.? I have ordered some?CRC Brake and Caliper grease from Amazon.? It'll be here Thursday.? I have to say that it took quite a bit to sway me from Artic Lube.? What did it was the plethora of Artic Lube variants.??CRC Brake and Caliper grease had two variants, large and small.

I use a toothbrush with detergent and hot water to remove old grease. Of course, this requires disassembly of the mount, but it is super easy to do this with Losmandy mounts.
What people are using for the rest of the mount? I use Lubriplate 105, which is recommended by a couple of premium mount makers. |
开云体育Yep.. And a mixture of 3:1 Lubriplate 105 and Nye Fluorocarbon Gel 868H for the worms.. ? Derek ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Alexander Varakin

Hi Jim, There are several sources of backlash.? I'd list them as:. 1. Worm side movement along it's axis 2. Worm gap to it's ring gear 3. Other drive gears or Oldham coupler looseness. #2 is helped by lower worm to ring gear friction, because if that were frictionless you could push the wirm further into its ring gear.?? The other way to eliminate #2 on RA is to hang a weight from a cord wrapped so the weight hangs to the East of the RA axis.? #1 is eliminated by allowing the far bearing to slide in it's cylinder, and putting a spring (R4 size Belleville spring washer) behind it to push the worm toward the gearbox end.?? #3 is minimized by tightening up on the drive parts.? In all of this effort you must beware of creating tight spots in the drive. On Wed, Jul 7, 2021, 3:17 PM Jim Waters <jimwaters@...> wrote: On Wed, Jul 7, 2021 at 02:12 PM, Derek C Breit wrote: |
Michael,
I have a can of Molykote G that I used to use for brake jobs on my performance german sedan... back from the days it was made by Dow-corning. Its taken me decades to make much of a dent in the little can (bought it back in the 1970s). Might this be similar to the CRC you mention?? greg latiak |
Hi Greg, The CRC brake and caliper grease has added anticorrosion chemicals so the MolyDisulphide does not (through some chemical reaction) react and corrode the brass worm.? I'm not sure if your older grease has this so I'd say: get the new grease.?? I'm usually very experimental, but in this case the $100 brass worm value far exceeds the cost of a jar of the CRC brake and caliper grease. All the best, Michael On Thu, Jul 8, 2021, 8:01 AM Gregory Latiak <glatiak@...> wrote: Michael, |
开云体育I have ignored what PHD2 says I have for backlash completely, as I believe it is more likely stiction and my guiding is rather good.. Also note that since the mount “works” perfectly for what I want to do, I don’t fret over perfection as I have much bigger problems with “normal” things that no one else would have problems with as my eyes are cratering from “extreme Glaucoma”.. Becoming hard to read the email too.. ? I am not far from selling the entire setup and being quite depressed for the rest of my days.. ? As for the expense of this lubrication, I was quite lucky that the person who recommended it, sold me enough from what he already had.. Also, I have no backlash as measured by hand moving the counterweight shaft or eyepiece diagonal.. My mount has never completed the PHD2 measurement of backlash (I tried about a dozen times over 6 months) so I started ignoring it and things have been great since then.. ? Derek ?
