Clutch knob Question

This would be a simple question if my G11 wasn't in my remote observatory 1700 miles away...

Is the standard clutch knob a threaded knob with a "RACKC" screwed in the back, or is it a single piece?

Thanks,
Frank

They are two separate pieces.

The smooth end black part unscrews, and it has with small threads (I'll guess 1mm pitch?) and this is where the polar scope bezel ring attaches.??

The knurled part on this system is hollow and the polar scope is inserted up the center.? This knurled part is the "clutch knob" that pulls down on the 1.25 inch solid steel RA axis rod and thus tightens the clutch pad (RA this case) up above and hidden by the RA marked angle indicator ring.

On the subject of clutch knobs....

I suggest you use my high friction clutch pads, so the knurled knob is all you really need to get firm clutch grip for imaging.? Otherwise, if you stay with the stock plastic clutch disks you may find the need for higher and higher clutch knob force, which can distort the metal body and cause worm to ring gear contact variation (hard to believe...but every solid thing has elastic properties).? If interested, contact me with a private email.

Losmandy makes a beautiful "3 handle" clutch knob too.? This gives also higher torque to the clutch machanism. But as I said, it's better to use a higher friction and not apply such high axial forces to the 1.25 inch shaft.??

All the best,
Michael

Hi Frank

it's threaded. hopefully these pictures will clarify
(these are optional accessories, but you can see clutch knob design)

Here is something to keep in mind if you get the CKS (clutch knob set) for increased leverage when tightening the clutch. I have a 2008 G11 with original (non-tucked) motors. The protruding levers on the declination clutch knob will hang up on the motor cable during certain slews. This of course isn't good for the cable, and can pull the cable out of the socket in the motor. To overcome this problem I've come up with an effective yet ugly solution as shown in the attached photos.

This is just a yogurt tub with hole in bottom slid up the declination shaft to cover the knobs. It is held in place by a loose-fitting hose clamp on the shaft. This plastic tub keeps the declination cable from hanging up. When access is needed to change dec clutch tension, the hole clamp easily slides down the shaft, so the tub is out of the way of the clutch knobs. There may be other less ugly but still effective methods to solve the problem.?

Russell, if it were a ¡°Red Solo Cup¡± it would be quite stylish!! Good idea. Tom

There is a much simpler way to solve this.. just move the cable from below the knob to on top of the RA motor..

Virus-free.

Thanks, Derek for the suggestion. It works great in keep the declination motor cable from fouling with the clutch knobs. The yogurt tub has been retired from service.
