JMI Polar scope on G11

Doug Culbertson

Here's what may be a silly question. I recently received my G11 and
bought the JMI version of the polar alignment scope for it since it
was available now.

Is anyone else using the JMI version? If so, what did you find as the
most convenient place to put the Velcro tab to hang the illuminator
control? Apparently the battery holder/controller can't be
disconnected from the polar scope without voiding the warranty, if I
read the paper that came with it correctly.

Thanks!

Hi,

I have no experience with the JMI version but my battery and cord is velcro'ed in
place inside the semi-pier. I just let the cord hang down through the bottom of the
pier then up behind the drive electronics. I just plug it in when needed. At some
point I want to mount an on-off/dimmer switch but it will have to wait for a cloudy
winter night.

Cheers,
Bill

Doug,

I velcroed mine to the outside cover of my encoder. Use a tab of glue or
something to hold the velcro in place. All of my velcro keeps coming off
the back of my illuminator switch.

You have a very good polar finder. It is roughly 6x in power.

Take care,

Thanks Gregory and Bill,

Both are good suggestions. I don't have the encoders, but I was
leaning more toward mounting it on the head itself so it does not
dangle or get in the way while putting the head on the tripod.

I agree, it is a very nice polar scope. It was suggested that I go
with the JMI for two reasons: 1. it works 2. it is available!

Of course, it has been cloudy ever since I received it, so I may
NEVER get to find out how good it is!

Hi Doug

I think I missed part of this thread. Functionally what is the
difference between the JMI Polar Scope and the Losmandy unit? Just
curious...

Thanks -David

Hi David,

I just got a Losmandy Polar Scope, but was told by several suppliers,
that they use the same optical system, but the JMI has better
electronics (i.e. it _has some_ electronics) to control the brightness.
(and it costs about $70 more...)

Robert.

From what I have been able to tell (I have never actually seen a
Losmandy polar scope) they do have the same reticle as the JMI unit,
so functionally they should be the same. The illuminator seems to be
more or less permanently attached on the JMI and, as I said earlier,
the instructions say it will void the warranty if you remove it. That
was the reason for my question as I had the impression that the
illumination gizmo on the Losmandy version could be removed.

The JMI illuminator dims on its own; that is, you press a buton which
illuminates the reticle and over the next several seconds it slowly
dims until it shuts off. It uses a rather expensive battery, but
according to the literature that came with it, the battery should
last something like 10 years under "normal use" (whatever that is!)

Is it worth $70 more than the Losmandy unit? I don't know. All I
know is that I was willing to pay that amount just to have the polar
scope now after hearing instances of the Losmandy model taking up to
6 months to arrive.

Hi there,
I have been trying to get a polar alignment scope for my G11 for about 6
months but keep getting told they are not available. The JMI EZAlign for
Losmandy looks really interesting but I can't find any info on it.

The JMI page says, 'Attaches in the normal position'. Umm. Is that normal
for a Losmandy mount or normal for a JMI polar scope? i.e Does it mount in
the bore?

Thanks

Hi Eddie,

The JMI EZAlign mounts in the same place and in the same manor as the Losmandy polar scope. We have sold many of them for both G-11¡¯s and GM-8¡¯s. From what our customers are telling us, they work great. Thank you!

Eddie,

The JMI will attach just like the Losmandy. Inserting it through the
center of the RA shaft. It is a 6x finder, comes with a collar that
allows it to be tightened into place using the threaded area available
at the end of the RA shaft. A small nylon type led then screws into the
finder. It allows focus with no problems associtated. The tightening
collar then has it's own set screw. You can then turn the alignment
finder to align the ecthings on Ursa Major and Cassiopeia before polar
alignment.

The vf is illuminated for 15 seconds starting with the brightest
illumination and dimming over that period. Usually, it takes two to four
pushes of the activation switch to get a good alignment. There are
indicator etchings on the glass for epoch 2000 and 2010 as well as 1950.
You can use two stars to aling on. There is an etchng to allow for a
third, but my skies have never allowed me to see that one.

After a maticulous alignment, my GM8 tracks very well.

Take care,
Gregory david Stempel

Hi Robert!

Thanks! I forgot we spoke of this briefly last time at Lake Sonoma.

Sounds like a great alternative. -David

Thanks Doug!

Hmmm - sounds like the illumnator is a bit fancier. I have an older
Losmandy polar scope, the illumnator is detachable and the control box
is heavy plastic with a rotary brightness control / switch, apparently
they are not coming with this control unit anymore.

Thanks for that Gregory,
But for me to align on Ursa Major, I would have to have a transparent floor,
and a hole drilled through the planet. Too much effort for me. I think I'll
just use Sigma Octanis :)

Seriously though, I am planning on ordering one. Life is too short for drift
aligning.

Thanks
