Re: Elongated Stars
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI¡¯ll just chime in that I¡¯ve noticed the same with my G811. ?RA is almost always worst than Dec (1.5 is a good guesstimate). Bill Tschumy Otherwise -- Longmont, CO www.otherwise.com |
Re: Western weight
Thank you David,
I am aware of the inverted Polemaster position. I had to rotate it 180 degrees because the counterweight ?is in the way. Not an issue really, It just reverses the adjustments for polar aligning (up=down and left=right) but one adapts easily enough and the polar alignment is just about as fast. |
Re: DEC error post L6 upgrade
Thanks, Sean. I'd have preferred the full zip file that is generated by the Troubleshooter, as that includes ASCOM logs which are not in the folder you created. Other than that, a quick review I see the following that troubles me, but then, I'm not sure if I'm reading the NINA log correctly. From your Gemini report, you are not using J2000 coordinates:
Precession=False
Refraction=False
Yet all the target coordinates in NINA log appear to be precessed J2000. Not sure if that's how it should appear in the NINA log, or not, but this could be the reason slews are not winding up where NINA expects them. An ASCOM driver log for this session would help clarify what actually happened there: 2024-06-01T22:22:56.8056|INFO|TelescopeVM.cs|SlewToCoordinatesAsync|912|Slewing from RA: 09:54:35; Dec: 69¡ã 04' 41"; Epoch: J2000 to RA: 09:52:46; Dec: 69¡ã 01' 48"; Epoch: J2000
Is there a reason that you have Sync disabled in the NINA centering routine? 2024-06-01T22:23:18.0369|INFO|CenteringSolver.cs|Center|95|Sync disabled
If you can share the ASCOM driver log for that session, it might help determine what happened and what coordinates were actually provided to Gemini. Regards, ? -Paul |

Paul, I upload NINA and Troubleshoot logs to new folder " L6 Dec Issue". This was around 10:20-10:30 CST. By 11:07 I was able to start a sequence. |
Western weight
I 3D printed a bracket that clamps on to the DEC axis and has a vixen shaped column on the western side onto which I clamp a 5lb ADM accessory dovetail counterweight.? Purpose of this is to have the western side of the mount slightly weighted. When I had the mount perfectly balanced I would notice a bit of backlash while guiding so this is an attempt to correct.? I¡¯ll post an update of the guiding here once I get a clear night (yeah good luck with that) from this SoCal marine layer. Rainy winter -> May grey -> June gloom.? |
Re: Elongated Stars
I also have a GM811, which I received new in March 2022. I typically have RA/DEC guiding at ~1.5 ratio (or worse), with total RMS typically about 0.8 arcsec. I¡¯ve occasionally gotten my total RMS down to 0.5 or slightly below with the RA and DEC sometimes similar, but not always. I¡¯m gaining experience in balancing the mount and cable management. As for PHD2, i use multi-star tracking with predictive PEC.

Re: DEC error post L6 upgrade
Update v41b Several nights without issue, and then we had a clear night so I went to do the usual routine. Except this time the problem re-occurs, I had M81 in Framing and selected Slew & Center, and the same problem that it just can not correct DEC. I went to a different target and same thing. Went back to CWD park, disconnected everything and power cycled the mount. Reconnect NINA & Cartes and everything was back to normal/good.? So since the previous good evening and last night, nothing much changed, but the "problem" does reoccur but then seems to fix itself.? |
Re: Elongated Stars
Just FYI but I also have a GM811 and also get 1.5-2.0x difference between RA and Dec. I¡¯m still on L5 though and usually my RMS is around 0.8 or so. Dec goes as low as 0.4 but tends to be around 0.5-0.6, RA goes as low as 0.7 but tends to stay around 0.8-1.0. I don¡¯t really see much elongation because of my image scale so I¡¯m ok with this setup for now, but would like to improve it in the near future.

Re: Elongated Stars
Interesting question.? Mine has been the same since I got it, with RA about 1.5x that of DEC.? I get some elongation in the stars, but not too bad as long as my guiding is below the image scale.? Still noticeable if you zoom in though.? I guide with a ZWO 2600 duo...so basically an OnAG.??

The PE did improve with PemPRO, but I'll have to dig up the logs for details and get back to you.? -- jamie.amendolagine@... |

Is there a trick to that one?Yes, Ryan. You can take a 2mm(?) Allen wrench and chop off about half of the short side of the "L". Then file and sand it until it is square and smooth again. I have this special wrench in my Losmandy parts and tools box for whenever it is needed. The other choice is to disassemble the base part of the mount and remove all four bolts that pivot and lock in the altitude adjustment so you can reach that screw. The wrench is simpler - use a hacksaw or a Dremel cutting disc if you have one. Good luck, John ? -- _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Losmandy G11G2 on pier; refurbed Losmandy G11 with OnStep controller; SkyShed design roll-off observatory; ZWO ASI2600MM-P; ZWO ASI071MC; Sky-Watcher Esprit 100 ED with field flattener; Celestron C925 Edge HD with 0.7XFR, William Optics Zenithstar 61 APO; PHD2, Sequence Generator Pro and PixInsight user |
Elongated Stars
Hi everyone.?
I'm back from the eclipse trip, happily imaging with my GM811G at L6. For the most part everything is going great. Seeing has been really good lately and I've seen total RMS dip into the 0.2's which is the best that I've ever seen. The issue is that RA is usually higher than DEC, something like 1.5 x to 2 x, and I can see really good data, but the stars are elongated. I don't see the elongation very much when the seeing is not quite so good. When RMS tends to be around 0.5 to 0.4, the random jitters from the atmosphere seem to average out better and I get round stars. Data is not nearly so beautiful, but the elongation is not apparent. Any idea how I can tame the RA when seeing is exceptional? I have successfully trained PEC with PEMPro and it seems to work, but it does not make much difference to the guiding performance.? First world problems, I know, but does anyone have an idea about how I can tame RA when seeing is exceptional?? -- jamie.amendolagine@... |
G11 RA Ring Gear Cover removal
Good evening, I managed to get those three small cap screws off the backside of the RA axis that hold the ring gear cover to the front of the mount but that bottom one sure was annoying, especially getting it tightened back in... Is there a trick to that one? Are people removing the RA Axis from the altitude adjustment block? |
