Re: Mature G11 repair
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýMany thanks to all! Given all the potential issues, I'm in contact with Michael Herman - thanks for the suggestion, John. Will update when we're all done - and operational! Thanks! Dale On 2/16/24 3:56 AM, John Kmetz wrote:

If the mount was that gummed up, the running on frozen bearings probably led to flat spots or gouged thrust bearing washers. Personally, I would replace all the bearings with new ones, including the internal needle bearings - not just do a relube. You may need new gearboxes as well as these plastic geared parts could be worn out. Michael has replacement non-slip clutch pads which you will are a resistant to slippage. I refurbed a 1996 mount myself which I now use successfully for AP purposes. Please let me know if you need further info. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDale.. Check your Junk mail folder, as I¡¯ve replied to you a couple times.. If you¡¯ve answered, I may not get it for awhile as I am streaming Sharks Hockey.. Additionally, if you want to borrow my Meade GFT and MA Adapter to test your mount, that could be arranged.. Derek ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jim Waters

Re: Mature G11 repair
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIn our initial testing, we only bench tested the mount
standalone, after doing some temporary repairs on the Gemini-1. We
took the RA and Dec axis apart to clean and re-grease before
anything else, as they were frozen and could not be moved by hand.
The servos now move both the RA and Dec axis.? There is still some
un-binding/gunk-work to do. We have no saddle nor pier/tripod yet, so real world testing is
yet to come. Dale On 2/15/24 5:45 PM, Jim Waters wrote:

Mature G11 repair
My club has recently obtained a maybe 2010 era? G11 with Gemini-1 controller, untucked servos, OPW, and pretty gummed up bearings and axis shafts.
We debugged the Gemini a bit and got it booted, tested the servos (good), and took apart both axis, using the Losmandy lube kit to remove really old hardened grease and free the bearings. Regreased with the Losmandy supplied grease. Clutch pads are a bit worn (some grooving).? The needle bearings were frozen, but eventually came free-ish.? Minimally, we should replace the clutch pads, and install new bearings. Haven't even started looking at the OPW. Any suggestions for further tweaks/upgrades/adjustments to make? SLW upgrade, bearings? Pitfalls? Thanks in advance! ?Dale Nelson |

Re: C11 users....what photographic results are you getting?
I have a somewhat similar M10 that I use for planetary, lunar and solar imaging. I did try it once or twice for dso when I had a woefully inadequate rig. I shot the omega centauri cluster with the celestron 0.63x reducer and a dslr camera riding an older, 492 driven gm8 and was satisfied with the results, but that required short exposures to counteract the large PE the mount had (before I learned to tune it).

Re: C11 users....what photographic results are you getting?
There is a lot of conflicting advice - such as a good image can't come from this scope because of being seeing limited.? I bought it years ago for visual use, so its costing me nothing (but the flattener and some adaptors) to try it.? ?I figured someone here must be imaging with a C11 and could share some results.?

Re: C11 users....what photographic results are you getting?
Hi Brian,
That's a pretty specific equipment combination, but perhaps you'll get a response. The G11 should be able to handle a C11 as far as payload. With my C925 I have gotten PHD2 guiding in the 0.6 error range but have gotten down to 0.4 in excellent seeing. I can't speak as to how an ASIAir would be better or worse since my preference is for PC controlled imaging. The Duo should give you nice guiding as long as you can find a guide star, and I've heard some mixed reviews with NB filters. I typically use the PPEC algorithm for RA guiding but not sure how that works in the ZWO environment. As long as you balance well and do your guiding calibrations, you should be OK to go. C11 users....what photographic results are you getting?
I'm looking to mount up my C11 with the 0.7 reducer and take some images of galaxies.? ?The image scale is about 0.4 arc-s/px, and my normal guiding with my 80mm refractor is 0.6-0.9, so I'll clearly be oversampled.? I figure I can Bin 2 to get my image scale about the same as seeing/guiding.? And folks on CN have seemed to have decent results doing this and adding in a deconvolution/sharpening step to the post processing.?
So losmandy users, how much luck have you had with C11?? Example images you can n share?? With galaxybseason nearing I'm keep to see what I can get.? But afraid maybe it's just not going to work out.? Brian |

You could always post an ad in your local astronomy club newsletters if you want somebody local to pick it up directly.? All the best/good luck!
