Re: NEW TUTORIAL: Direct Ethernet Connection

Can the other things (camera, guiding, focuser, and/or USB hub) be incorporated into the Gemini 2 Ethernet connection? Goal is a one cable does everything package. not through Gemini, but it may be possible through a microRouter - someone would have?to test if you could run a USB camera through one of those adapters, but that ain't a half bad idea On Fri, Jun 19, 2020 at 1:22 PM Sonny Edmonds <sonnyedmonds@...> wrote: On Thu, Jun 18, 2020 at 08:38 PM, Brian Valente wrote: --

Hi Tim I think you are referring to the video i did with woodland hills? if so it's the wyze cam v2 ? it's super inexpensive and has night IR as well It's mobile app native, but you can update the firmware for computer access if you want to (google wyze cam rtsp)? Re: Sawtooth pattern in DEC
Arun that sound like a good plan FYI sharpcap uses plate solving, which kind of changes the game re: needing to drift align. you can also upgrade your PA using sharpcap on your main OTA for a longer focal length and improved accuracy. so I think you have a lot of runway for improvements in the future Brian On Fri, Jun 19, 2020 at 11:44 AM Arun Hegde <arun.k.hegde@...> wrote: Hi Michael- --

Re: Sawtooth pattern in DEC

Hi Michael-
I don't know if I wan't to do drift align yet, for 480mm it probably isn't necessary. I can totally see how it would be needed for 3000+mm. But I do plan to make concrete improvements to my PA. Next time, I'm going to hook up my ASi290MM guide cam to my 200mm guidescope currently gathering dust since I moved to OAG. That should give me 3"/px, which is 10x better than the what Polemaster can do on it best day. Then I'll use Sharpcap with that combo. This should easily get me under 30" polar alignment, much better than I can do consistently today. Together with DEC backlash and PPEC, I am confident I am going to see a meaningful improvement. Again, my guiding is not lacking now, but I am preparing myself for longer focal lengths where it is more challenging. As mentioned, I am going to get my second scope, an ONTC 1010 Newton. I am a bit reluctant to increase the friction on those clutch plates. A week back, my guide cam wire snagged on the tripod knob as I was returning the scope to CWD. I was doing this remotely from my living room and could see the scope wasn't moving and took me a while to realize what was happening. Fortunately for me, the friction in the clutches was not too tight. From the discussions in this group, I have learned not to overtighten the clutches. The clutch slipped and saved my guide cam (and my main cam that the cable was attached to). If I had overtightened the clutch, I could in this scenario have damaged my camera. I realize this was mainly me being not careful enough, but for this reason I want to keep the current clutches for as long as possible. If I don't realize the improvement with PHD2, then I will move to higher friction material. Arun |
Re: Sawtooth pattern in DEC
This is a great thread!?
I tried phd2 pec guiding last night with the period you gave and RA RMS seemed to have a nice improvement. Hard for me to tell if it was just seeing, but I went from 1.1 the previous night to 0.8. I've never gotten pec to work with the GM811 before.? |
Re: Sawtooth pattern in DEC
Dear Arun, The polar axis tools (video camera type, or visual polar scope) are an excellent start.? It is after that is completed that you would do a Drift Align method.? If you have not done Drift Align before, expect to take awhile to get used to it.? I use the nice PHD2 Drift Align tool to watch for the angle of the DEC axis tracking.? You make adjustments until that DEC line is level flat.?? You start Drift Align?on a star near the meridian and equator, and at that pointing position, you only will observe and correct AZ error, not Elevation.? After that is done, you move to a star near the equator and either horizon.? At that position, you only adjust for elevation error, not AZ.???When done your mount will be very very accurately aligned and your autoguider will have very few DEC corrections...ideally only RA corrections to the small number of PE irregularities.? To help me make these Elevation and Azimuth adjustments, I put little cut "arrows" ...just thin wedges of label maker white adhesive tape...on the black adjustment knobs.? I put a pointer at 12 o'clock on my Elevation front knob, and my East side Azimuth adjustment knob.? This helps me see how much knob rotation I use when doing the polar adjustments.? I am running a very long FL like 3950mm 14 inch f11 SCT.? If you are running a wide angle scope you may not have as critical a polar alignment task. (By the?way, once you do an accurate drift align, it's a good time to run a PE test on a star near the meridian and equator, using PHD2 with the autoguiding turned off after it calibrates.? Drift in DEC can mess up a PE evaluation run, even though the analysis software will try to subtract out a linear drift in the star movement, it's better to just have none there. ) Back to the mechanical "hysteresis" question.?? Each clutch disk, RA or DEC,? will "slip" after you apply some amount of torque to the scope.? It should require a strong effort to cause the clutch to slip.? Contact me if your clutch is "too slippery."? ?I have a different clutch disk for you to use for imaging.?? But I mean to have you wiggle the (DEC) axis at a lower force than causing the clutch to slip.? Again, look for worm movement along its axis, if you can see it (if your axis has a removable cover, take that off to observe the worm).? If it is able to move along it's axis, you should try to eliminate that movement...that certainly is a cause of time delay ("hysteresis") in the drive response.? It represents time that the (PHD2) correction program is wasting trying to get a correction. Hope you resolve your imaging tracking soon...then send us some pretty pictures! All the best, Michael On Thu, Jun 18, 2020, 8:02 PM Arun Hegde <arun.k.hegde@...> wrote: Hi Michael, |

But just like the 9 pin serial port is a thing of the past, and USB took over, RJ45 appears to be going the way of the do-do as well. except in certain business networking scenarios. Of which, most have been going fiber optic for decades. My >not that old< Win 10, 2 in 1, has USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, and an HDMI port. Re: Sawtooth pattern in DEC

Hi Michael,
You're correct that the PA can be better. PHD2 reports the error to be about 3 arc minutes, much worse than the Polemaster is rated to be. So I think that is certainly contributing. I've never drift aligned, but next time, I'll try Sharpcap. Lots of people seem to be getting better results with it than the Polemaster. I have tried to check for looseness in the DEC axis. I can certainly move the scope in DEC with enough force, but it is a smooth deliberate motion, not slop. I think that's how the clutch is supposed to work. Based on this I'm thinking that I will see improvement by better PA and mostly by using backlash compensation in PHD2. I was hoping to try it tonight and report, but clouds moved in earlier than expected. I can't complain too much though. We've have a week of clear skies right before the New Moon. That's only happened once before in SE Wisconsin since I started imaging, and that was two years ago. So I'll have to wait a few days. In the meantime, good health and clear skies to all of you. Re: NEW TUTORIAL: Direct Ethernet Connection
Sonny i don't know for sure, but i read the details, and it seems promising. it says you probably don't even need driver software let us know when it arrives. at least now you have a guide for how to configure it! ?Sonny did you watch the video Brian did on the Mango router? I did this and was shocked at how easy it was and everything fell right in place for me. I usually struggle with stuff like that. I had a TP-Link and Randy Pufahl helped me get that going but I had issues with my ip changing in the gemini when I would turn it on. I don't remember the exact ip but it would be one thing one time and another next. Just kept going between those 2. When Brian did the video I decided to try it. Now my ip is set and I enjoy being able to use my laptop or my phone to verify I'm on the right star when I'm going through the modeling . Yea I'm new at this. lol? I have a dell xps L502x .?

Re: NEW TUTORIAL: Direct Ethernet Connection

OK. So to every solution, there is a problem...
I'm using a Dell 2 in 1 Tablet/Laptop as my Mount Computer. And it has historically been connected with a 15' USB cable, USB B type, to a USB A type connectors. I have the , and have tried hooking it up. Dandy. I can see it, I can select it as my router, I haven't gotten things to work quite yet. But my particular (Peculiar) Computer does not have an Ethernet Port. :^( So I ordered . My hope is to one day use a CAT 5E cable from my mount, into my RV where I can be bug free and climate controlled. (Old Farts want their comforts) (Please note: I'm not concerned with high speed. I'm fine with 2.0 as many of my items are 2.0.) I think not having an Ethernet Port has been my hindrance with my Baby Dell. It has 2 - USB 2.0 ports, and a USB 3.0 port where I was thinking of putting the adapter cable, because it is a higher speed port. So my hope is the simple USB 2.0 to Ethernet RJ45 does the trick for LAN with my chunk of CAT 5E cable. (Appx 25 feet) Or my new routers take care of wirelessly giving me my remote location luxury. Re: Astronomical Info link
I have windows 7 and since microsoft quit supporting it they must have done something to cause problems with flash. A lot of times in news articles or other pages I can't see a video. I have checked and flash is enabled. I like windows 7 I don't really care for windows 10. I wish they would leave 7 alone. All I can see is the empty box also.
