OnStep Goto Conversion
A few GM8/G11s have been converted to stepper operation by members of?/g/onstep. Stepper drivers, basically current amplifiers, have come a long way since the 492 was developed in the early '90s as have microprocessors. Stepper motors are quite quite when operated at high microstepping rates. Current drives can break each step into 128 movements.? These improvements permit a NEMA 11 stepper (?Frame Size (28 x 28mm)?with a 18;1 gear head to drive a G11. The motor and its gear head tuck neatly under the RA worm housing.? ? |

开云体育On power, you might consider using a lithium iron phosphate battery.? It is tolerant of temp unlike lithium batteries but is not cheap.? But it is lighter and, with purchased battery charger, you can use it at home plugged in.? I'm not sure that's a great battery for astro (although that seems like a good price for a general battery safety thing). 1200 amps is the max for starting a car, which is not important for steady power to astro gear. the important one is 22amp hours. A straight 22 amp hour 12v battery is about $45.?

Re: Just purchased GM811GHD
开云体育But if you buy a bare battery you of course also need a charger, connectors for whatever you want to hook to it, an inverter if you have stuff that needs 110VAC, and probably some kind of case.?Going the other way, there’s this kind of thing??which costs quite a bit more per watt-hour, but it’s a lithium battery so weighs only about 1/3 of the lead-acid equivalent, and has 5V, 12V, and 110V outputs. Although, come to think of it, a lead-acid battery is still light weight compared to a Losmandy mount. :) ??-Les On Dec 7, 2017, at 8:10 AM, Brian Valente bvalente@... Re: Just purchased GM811GHD
Thank you all for the help! I just got my GM811GHD!?
I bought a large rolling toolbox from home depot and bought some foam online to make a cheap but protective case such as the pelican cases (not airline safe though). I'll use this for the RA and DEC axis' and any smaller accessories. I got an Orion padded telescope case to carry the HD tripod around (that thing is a beast). Luckily my apartments have an elevator so rolling/carrying these down won't be too difficult.? I also just purchased a QHY Polemaster that will come in the mail this week.? Still deciding on if I need to get the RA extension yet. Might try to machine something myself to do something similar.? Next will be to figure out how to DIY a portable 12V battery pack? I'll probably make a more detailed post on how I DIY'd my carrying solution for the mount + tripod. Can't wait for clear skies to try everything out! |
Re: G11 cable management
开云体育Magnus,The stepper motors are the original motors used on the G11, they do not support Go To, just tracking and guiding. I replaced them only because I wanted to remotely control my telescope. They are still available as an option on the web site. 'G11 S - G11 Mount with Digital Control 492 System. Stepper Motors outboard of mount. Standard 2 Point Worm Gear Block Assembly.' Regards Paul

Re: G11 cable management
Hi!
A slight detour from the topic, but as I'm trying to get to know the full landscape: - what stepper motors? I see that there are stepper motors sold by Losmandy, and another set for using with a different GoTo system in Germany. But what are the Losmandy stepper motors for? I recently upgraded my servo motors to new high torque servo motors.. should I have had steppers instead? Magnus |
Re: G11 cable management
开云体育Chip,It’s funny you should say that, the first thing that people comment about when they see my tucked in motors is “they are a lot quieter than normal”. I hadn’t noticed because I moved from the stepper motors, which are effectively silent. Regards Paul
