Re: G1 on G-11 refuses to go to bright stars

Thanks for your so helpful support on this! Finally, I do believe I have some good news. However, I wish to keep testing and see if it stays good. I got a new EPROM from David, installed it today, which included a Cmos Reset. And after that I could Go To Bright star without a problem! All stars I tried worked nicely. And I could align the scope. And slew to M33, and all. So this far it looks very very good. Probably it was the Eprom then, right? Magnus [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

Re: GM8 azimuth adjustment
hi gang, Belleville washers save the day here...making this a nicely adjustable AZ system.?? I observe that on a long FL scope doing Drift alignment,? loosening the AZ bolts, even slightly, makes the guide scope jump.? It's just an unwelcome annoyance.? ?A few dollars fixes this nicely.?? On a short fast wide angle scope, you may not notice.? ?Then again, no mount is identical... Best, Michael? On Nov 14, 2017 10:28 AM, "glatiak@... [Losmandy_users]" <Losmandy_users@...> wrote:

Re: GM8 azimuth adjustment
Oh, fine. So the drag of the lock screws acts to take up the slop, so to speak. Sorry for my indelicate turn of phrase... but I will keep this in mind next time I have to do it. Prior kit that I have owned required a full release of the locks to avoid wrecking something.
Thanks, chip. g |
Re: GM8 azimuth adjustment
Greg,
You have to barely loosen the locks on the base and approach your alignment from one direction and then tighten the locks side to side a little bit at a time. In my experience with the G11 and GM8 it doesn't take much pressure to lock the AZ down so there is little to be gained from tightening them too much.? Chip |
GM8 azimuth adjustment
Question -- is there any way to reduce the amount of play on the azimuth adjustment? I noticed that when last polar aligning my mount (using the Sharpcap tool on my VRC6) that there was a small amount of 'slop' and I could adjust within a few minutes of true but after flipping back and forth a few times simply declared victory and locked it down. I am aware that the Gemini-2 modelling will compensate for small amounts of polar misalignment... but still. Thoughts or suggestions? Thanks, greg latiak |

Re: Pointing issues
开云体育? Food for thought.. If Gemini is unique in modeling without a PC, why would the answer be to modify Gemini.net / ASCOM?? ? Visual Observers who setup each time are an after thought to Gemini 2.. I continue to wish I had not acquired this mount.. And no.. I am not an idiot, and I will figure it out or I will beat it to death with a large sledgehammer.. ? I have never made it to the 3rd star and seldom to the second.. And I am staring at The Summer Triangle!! ? There.. I said it.. ? Derek |
Re: Dec vernier old Celestron G11
There is no vernier for the DEC on a CG11. Only an acrylic plate with a scribed line for the DEC scale. I uploaded a picture to the Files area.

Re: Pointing issues
Thanks, Paul. I agree that the best approach is understanding how to best use Gemini, as it does work well. If my list of steps work for Doc (PuzzleWuzzle), then his problem is solved on the practical level.?? Let's see what Doc reports as progress,.. or remaining trouble. Re: Pointing issues
> Do you think there could be a way to do that multiple star triangulation and interpolation, using the Gemini? > model system.? I had an idea about 4-5 years ago to implement a very simple pointing corrector as part of Gemini.NET, but after a few attempts, I found that my chosen method (using only three stars) wasn't accurate enough, so I gave up :) Of course, if someone wanted to contribute the modeling code to Gemini.NET, I would be interested, and would help where I can. Re: Dec vernier old Celestron G11
Dr Puzzleworth I have that "CG11" mount, perhaps even a photo somewhere of the Dec markings.? I'm on travel, but when I get home will send that or take a picture for you.? In practice,? if you have a Gemini for GoTos, you really will just want to mark where "CWD" is...and for that, putting on two white label maker triangles as arrows works well for me.?? Best, Michael? Re: Pointing issues
Paul, I understand and the openness of Gemini.net is of great value.? ?Your authorship and maintenance and improvements of that are also a fabulous benefit. The Orion Atlas/Synta EQ6 group has a PC interface program called EQMOD that is so good, people sell off their hand controllers completely and just use that.? ?In their EQMOD pointing model method, they do model cone error and some other parameters, but as importantly, they triangulate in the region between known "align" stars, so each portion of the sky can have a unique "pointing model" for its part of the sky? (actually each star ).? Then any other object is just interpolated.? Extrapolation is used outside "align" points but that is a less certain region.? You add align stars across the sky as the need arises for new targets, which you just interpolate position.?? The Atlas mount itself is not as rigid a platform as the G11, or maybe not even as solid as the GM8.? The tripod is weak, the mount head is inadequately coupled to the tripod, the AZ and elevation adjustments are weak.? PE is worse.? But still the Atlas GoTos are rarely if ever far from their target.? There is just a conceptual difference in how the sky and mount and scope are modeled between the EQMOD and the Gemini. So...my question is:? Do you think there could be a way to do that multiple star triangulation and interpolation, using the Gemini model system.? That is, keep all the Gemini parameters zero, yet get its encoder tick positions, and then map the GoTo sky chart location to the Gemini through a PC program like EQMOD is doing? Anyway...not a short term project for sure... Best, Michael?? On Nov 12, 2017 12:20 PM, "'Derek C Breit' breit_ideas@... [Losmandy_users]" <Losmandy_users@yahoogroups.
