Exactly how to set the Gemini 2 over to UTC time?

Looking to change my setups over to UTC time. Now do I just change over the time zone in the hand controller and the Gemini settings to 00?
This made the current time listed as the UTC time.? Also, Civil time is now displayed as UTC time.
Is this the correct way to set it up?? The GPS updated my site, and will it do the same to the time?
I assume this is how it gets the UTC time to sync with location and let the Gemini unit work correctly?
?
Thanks,
David Malanick

Re: G-11 Meridian Flip with ASIAir Pro

I did get mine working. This video really helped. You have to pay attention to the mount limits in the Gemini and how they relate to the settings for meridian flips in the ASIAir.

Re: Strange bearing sound

Hi Chip,
of course I've already sent an e-mail to Losmandy, but haven't heard back from them yet. Not sure if they really got my mail, since I received two automatic mails. One from the mailer daemon that the mailbox did not accept the mail and one that kindly asks me to be patient for 24-72h :-)
I definitely don't want to try to remove the bearing without knowing the proper procedure to do so. If really necessary, I'll swallow the bullet and send them the part.?
If time permits, I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Re: Strange bearing sound

?
Hi Andre,?
?
Based on that video how unlikely the bearings are to be contaminated given their location is irrelevant at this point.? IME a noisy bearing is a bad bearing and the fact of the matter is unless that bearing was delivered bone dry or it has been hot solvent tanked and blown completely dry the bearing is contaminated and should be replaced.? Experience has taught me it is generally cheaper to replace them than try to save it, unless of course your time has a zero value and you happen to have a clean hot solvent tank with fresh solvent you can commit to a good long soaking.? ? ? ?
?
My suggestion is to have it replaced by Losmandy but being in Germany makes that somewhat impractical given the cost to ship it to the USA and back to Germany.? But that cost must be compared with the risk of damaging the worm gear if it is replaced locally without Losmandy's specific knowledge about the assembly.? Whatever the OP's decision, a main bearing making that kind of noise it will have a negative impact on the mount's performance sooner than later.?
?
I know it's easy for me to say, I live 15-20 minutes from Losmandy.? But I'm not paranoid, but in doing the math it's really just about the OP realizing they need to bite the bullet and drop it in the mail to Losmandy.? But I am probably biases as I also didn't have an issue Fed-Xing a failed Gemini-2 to Brendan on the other side of the planet for repairs because I thought they are the right person to give my Gemini-2 the best chance of a successful repair.? ? ?
? ?
Of course the usual Cavet YMMV applies.??

Re: G-11 Meridian Flip with ASIAir Pro

I'm still having the same issue, have not figured out a solution. Mine starts the flip, I hear the RA and DEC motors start to spin up, and then they stop. I've only been able to
make it happen manually; pause the ASIAir's program, return to home position, and then do another "go to" (paying attention to the direction the mount moves, to ensure it's actually going to the "flipped" position), and then get back on track. Very frustrating. I had no issues with my Skywatcher EQ6R, worked flawlessly every time.?

Re: Strange bearing sound

Hi Andre,
?
Good luck with your efforts. So far no one has reported replacing this bearing in the last seven or so years I've been on this forum, so there is not much further advice we could offer. I have a restored G11 from 1997 that I currently use, and these bearings are perfectly fine after all that time. I think they are more than capable of withstanding the load of this type of mount and much more. Once you get it relubricated and reinstalled you will probably be in good shape. Then on to the other adjustments :).

Re: Strange bearing sound

Hi John,
?
the shield on the bearing looks like it's the crimped on type. Opening would probably bend the shield. So I guess for the time being, I'll leave it as is, since it's not stuck or anything and concentrate on getting rid of the backlash.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Strange bearing sound

Hi Andre,
?
It seems unlikely your main bearing inside the Dec ring gear could have gone bad inside such a short use period of only a few years. There is often some play in bearings when there is no load being applied and the ball bearings can just jiggle around. As already mentioned, you should thoroughly solvent flush the bearing and blow out with some compressed air if you have it. After you relubricate with a quality bearing grease (my favorite is Mobilgrease 28 aircraft grease, though any automotive wheel bearing grease should also work), the bearing should spin like glass if you push in the race from one side with a little pressure. You should feel no grit or choppy motion. Replacing this bearing should be done by Losmandy or a machine shop. It is unlikely you will be able to punch it out and replace it at home without special tools without wrecking the ring gear or getting it misaligned. Most likely they are pressed in with a hydraulic press to get them in smoothly and keep them perfectly flat.
?
You Dec issues are probably caused by the worm to ring seating as Chip mentioned. There are a number of Lomandy YouTube videos on this topic, and you should be able to search this forum too for further info - it's been discussed very frequently.

Re: Strange bearing sound

Mitsumi has 5 models of 6010ZZ (ZZ denotes non contact/shielded type). Models differ by load strength, quality, etc. They should have German distributor.

Re: Strange bearing sound

Hey Chip,
thanks for your explanations!
Ordering parts from Losmandy directly is a bit of a hassle from Germany. Shipping is quite expensive compared to the cost of the parts and dealing with the customs is also not my favourite game. I think the 6010Z bearing is a standard part which I could easily buy locallly.
Is there a recommended way of replacing the bearing? I guess, a bearing puller is required? When putting a new one in, should I heat up the worm gear and cool down the bearing?

Hi Andre,
?
The bearing is contaminated.? You might get it cleaned out if you have a filtered solvent tank parts washer but you can save a lot of trouble and time, just buy a new one and replace it.? While you are there ordering a new one from Losmanday order the maintenance kit with the recommended grease.? One stop shopping.??
?
But these issues including the slight misalignment of the spur gears have nothing to do with your DEC backlash.? If the spur gears mesh and do not disengage while turning you are GTG though I'd reset that engagement if I were you.? To find the real DEC issues look for worm end play between the worm bearing blocks from shifted or loose worm bearing blocks on their reference? plate. The other very commonly seen issue are loose grub screws on the Oldham coupler, remember to check all 4 grubs on the coupler.??
?
If none of those are the issue then check your sprung OPW and verify the bottom fasteners are just barely snug and that the spring retaining fastener is the recommended number of turns out from coil bind or bottomed.? The worm lift screw should not have moved inadvertently but it can also cause excessive worm backlash if it is turned in too much for some reason but this is the last place I'd check.??
?
Keep us posted.

Small but mighty.? Yup they were at NEAF as was our former insider Brian Valente who was seen in an interview at the AP booth.? They will be pooped and swamped next week, let them ease back into it.?

You struck a chord with me right here.

These things are always a constantly changing journey for me. I worked hard to have a successful career primarily for my family, but also to support how I approach these hobbies. I can directly tell you how all of these various equipment compare because I have all of them.

Yes, I want to explore the ?Universe and make incredible images, but along the way I can compare everything from a ten year old Vixen mount to a Paramount, ZWO strain wave mounts, a G11G and most recently an AP 1100 AE. This is my fun.
?
And I am finding out if a $2K ZWO can be guided to the same quality as a $16K AP. At the field of views I like to shoot, they all work pretty well. And I still ?use all of them on different occasions for various reasons. Being able to run a G11 at 0.4" guiding with an ASIAIR is wonderful. But so is building a DEC arc model and doing unguided 5 minute subs on the AP if I'm in the mood to bother.
