Re: Light-Weight Tripod Turning Dark Purple
There's not much you can do about it.? The aluminum parts are anodized.? The anodizing process turns the surface of the raw aluminum to a very hard and wear resistant aluminum oxide layer that protects the underlying metal. Aluminum oxide is transparent; color is added as a final step in the processing by dipping the freshly processed parts in a dye solution.? The dye is absorbed and sealed in the oxide coating.? They can choose just about any color under the sun, hence some telescope mounts are red and other colors. Unfortunately, not all dyes are stable under exposure to UV light as you are finding out when you remove the tape.? Those portions are still black. Sort of having the parts stripped and re-anodized, there's not much to do about it.? The anodizing is still working fine at protecting the parts, it's just the dye gradually fading.? I'd just live with it as I do with my somewhat elderly G-11. Jim Simpson National Capital Astronomers |
Re: Light-Weight Tripod Turning Dark Purple
The anodic oxidation process is performed in an electrolyte solution that typically contains sulfuric, chromic or oxalic acids, and converts the aluminum at the metal surface to alumina. Alumina is a??polycrystalline ceramic material. It readily absorbs moisture from the air and becomes a hydrate. The chemicals from the electrolyte are affected by high temperatures and sunlight. The changes in chemical composition of the alumina cause it to absorb different wavelengths of light and reflect others. Going to purple from black would indicate that it is no longer absorbing all wavelengths and reflecting some?of the ultraviolet. |
Re: Light-Weight Tripod Turning Dark Purple
My G11G dates from 2005. About half the aluminum bits still hold their original black anodizing, while the other half are various shades of dark purple. Most of the purple bits are still so dark I have to shine a flashlight on them to see the purple tinge, while others are clearly dark purple to the unaided eye.

Re: Balancing Scope
I use NATO clamps and rails.? These are an adaption of the military riffle scope mounting systems and they consist of a rail with periodic slots that capture rods on the scope end of the mount.? The DSLR video camera industry have co-opted this system and they have all sorts of clamps and rails to mount all the various accessories a DSLR videographer might use.? The other system, also for DSLR video, are the 15mm rod and clamps.? Also 19mm rod and clamps.? All nice hardware relatively cheap once you learn the brands.
Do a search on Amazon or AliExpress for NATO Clamps and Rails and Accessories.? I purchase my stuff on AliExpress because they are cheaper, but you have to wait longer. If you want more info on this stuff and pic of my scope and how I used it, PM me with the subject line: Nato clamps and rails. Bob Forgot to mention, this is presented as a system to conveniently mount your counter weight to balance your scope in both the radial and axial directions, and not make your scope look ugly! ![]() |
Light-Weight Tripod Turning Dark Purple

I removed some 'glow in the dark' tape from my tripod legs and discovered that my tripod is turning dark purple. I don't know if these are power-coated or anodized but the sections under the tape is black.? I have had my G11G for about 5 years.? Is this normal and what can be done about it?

Try this. The first thing that comes up: ? ? ? ?
If you want to know if your mount is under warranty, call Losmandy. |

Re: Warranty?
Actually, it is only in the PDF version of the user's manual but not in the HTML one, both at losmandy.com.? I was searching and could not find it because it returned the HTML version as the first pick.

We should add that -- unless somebody knows something I don't --
Losmandy mounts don't require perfect balance unless they are very heavily loaded. Over in the iOptron user community there is or was constant kerfuffle about balance.? The reason?? iOptron mounts swing *very* freely when unlocked, so even a few grams of imbalance can be noticed. On the other hand, AVX owners don't complain about balance because AVXs are so stiff that they don't move when unlocked unless the imbalance is quite large.? The hard part about balancing an AVX is detecting the error! |
Re: Balancing Scope
I have this same issue on a new scope I just got, a little 75mm petzval.? The focus motor seems to be hung out enough that it affects the '3D' balance.? I was thinking of making a block to screw to my Losmandy style plate with a threaded rod and some weights, similar to what Paul describes.?

When I balance a scope, I get conflicting results depending on where the axis' are when balancing. It seems it should be balanced providing a stable position no matter how I turn the scope. Like a neutral condition. But if I balance it when the scope is level, and then move the axis so it is not level, it is not balanced anymore.Chances are you have some mass that is not fully concentric with the centerline of the scope.? Like a focuser motor or a filter wheel sticking out to the side.? This will require that you add a corresponding mass to the other side of the scope (referred to as balancing the third axis).? This can be done by attaching a weight directly to the side of the scope or (more commonly) on a stalk attached to the RA shaft, perpendicular to the scope optical axis. With the RA shaft horizontal, loosen the DEC clutch and carefully balance the scope with the tube horizontal.? Now swing it to vertical (ie, pointing straight up or down).? If it does not remain stationary when you release it, you need to balance that third axis. There are surprisingly few commercial solutions out there so I made mine by 3D printing a collar for the RA shaft with a threaded hole for a grub screw to hold it tightly in place.? I screw a piece of threaded rod into that grub screw hole to lock the collar in place and the threaded rod carries a stack of large fender washers (my poor man's counterweight) that can be adjusted in and out between a couple nuts for a perfect balance.
