Magnus,

It is roughly an hour. I haven't tried to get a more accurate estimate, but I think that's pretty close.? That correlation with DST is why I looked at the time in the handset :(

RA motor lag!

Hi all, could not get the mount to track tonight, checked time/Date/location, polar aligned, tried all tracking modes, normal guide control was fine.. was like this for a few hours then I got the error message "RA motor lag!" and neither motor would operate. Packed it all up and brought it in, set it up again indoors without the telescope and both motors move now with no error messages. Does anyone please have any idea what might have caused this..? my kit is a G11 Gemini 1 v4. 10" Newtonian.? Thank you..

I have everything working like it should too, except for my Declination Backlash.. If I ignore and let PHD do it¡¯s thing, I get sub arcsecond guiding so I haven¡¯t messed with it much.. But whenever y¡¯all get bored enough, I¡¯ll start a thread on that..

?

One thing I did since last I was here was gave up on OAG guiding and acquired the Losmandy 3 ring quide scope setup and put my 80mm Stellarvue ED into it.. Works perfectly, just like Chip always said it would..

?

Now all I have to do is trade my 12¡± Meade OTA for the laptop I need.. Or the electric focuser I need..

It¡¯s always something..

Hello Derek,

Sorry LOL... I learned the limits trick real quick one night slewing to a GoTo, I had not set the limits yet, thank you Scott, that the stop button on the HC is immediate.? Derek, the mount will stop at your set limits. I probably would not expand them beyond the safety limits. You may still have room to adjust them during a trial run.

HAPPY SKIES TO YOU AND KEEP LOOKING UP Deric

Deric¡¯s answer of ¡°won¡¯t track past the limits¡± is NOT what I wanted to hear.. Mental Note.. Cross Deric off the Christmas Card list.. HA.. Kidding of course..

?

So..

1.. The limits are either the defaults or only slightly ¡°better¡± i.e. a smaller zone of exclusion.. I have always avoided anywhere near the zenith so I wouldn¡¯t ever have to worry about crashing my glorious refractor into the tripod.. I am positive that with the RA Extension, and when I switch to the 80mm NightHawk, the zone of exclusion will be quite small.. but no.. I have never properly set the limits because they would be different for the 130mm f/7 vs 80mm f/6..

?

2.. I am going to do that in an hour or so..

?

3.. ¡°Pier side west¡±.. Maybe we could actually use English?? :-)) I Wish to find the target a couple hours early and my camera would be to the West and the ¡°business end¡± would be pointing at about 90 degrees azimuth and about 70 degrees elevation.. as time elapses, the objective would pass thru the Zenith and the camera would get closer to the pier.. At event time, the scope would be 3 degrees past vertical and the camera close to the pier with an impending crash at some point.. Hopefully 3 minutes after the fact.. (This is a 9 second asteroid occultation and we like to record +/- 3 minutes)..

?

Looking at this..

it looks like I don¡¯t have to do anything, as I have used the scope in these positions quite a bit and am very used to them.. (I use the ¡°East Side¡± for my planetary imaging) All I have to do then is go check for actual interference.. Beautiful..

?

THANKS!

Hi Derek

?

nice to?hear from you ;)

?

My input is to break down your question into parts:

First, limits are designed to prevent your scope from crashing into your pier. So first, you want to make sure you set your limits specific to your setup, if you haven't already done so.

?

Second, you should estimate where your event starts , and slew your telescope there to see if you can achieve

?

Third, I would start on pier side west if possible. I don't know the exact timing and length, but if it's something that is going through the meridian, starting on opposite side of pier where you eliminate the meridian flip or any concern there would be ideal.?

It *is* possible to cheat this for a specific event IF all the conditions are right. When you set the limits, you loosen DEC and check it, so that under any DEC conditions you will not have a pier collision. However, if you know your specific DEC, you can adjust the limit to go even further if the camera setup allows it.?

?

?

i hope that all makes sense

Well, yes.. Because now I have a question / problem.. Original (non tucked motors) G11 w/ Gemini II.. I have RA EXT installed.. Works perfectly.. My question is, ¡°How do the limits work?¡±.. I have an asteroid occultation ¡°near¡± the Zenith and want to know how the limits work so it won¡¯t go kablooie just before the event..

?

I would like to find the target star a couple hours in advance, where it would roughly be 70 degrees up in the East.. Can I track thru the limits until event time, where the star will be 3 degrees past the Zenith or will the scope stop before then?? OR! Do I have to change the limits so the mount never gets near them in the first place??

?

The root of the question is.. I *assume* I can¡¯t do a goto to a target past the limits, but will the scope track past the limits and/or can I drive the scope past the limits with the hand controller?? I will check in advance to make sure the optics wont crash into the mount or tripod, as well as being there and watching things as the event occurs.. I just don¡¯t want to go to all the trouble to do this and have the mount stop 5 minutes beforehand..

?

Thanks in Advance and Happy Thanksgiving!

Derek

2 different servo types which goes where?

Hi,

I got a Losmandy gm811g. I am new to telescopes and losmandy. I am trying to assemble it and follow the instructions on the youtube series "Losmandy Getting started"
There are 2 different servos in the package. SVM-HT and SVM-HTS - I put the SVM-HT onto the DEC axis. Is this right? Which of the axis should it go on?
What is a good way for me to get started here? I feel a little overwhelmed.?

Kind Regards for your help.

As in no GPS, and no compass coordinates available (not to mention any other cell phone operations).
I pulled out my magnetic compass to get my starting North setting. ;^)
So, that is another reason to carry both with you in the Field (mountains, desert, rocks, sage brush, Joshua Trees, Alien intervention...)

I use this Polaris GPS Navigation app on my Android phone.
(I looked for something similar for Apple users, but sorry.)
I like this location app for it's accuracy.
But I'm a bit anal about accuracy... ;^)

Ok? few thoughts.??
If you want either Michael or I have replacement HCs (Michaels closer, in USA...I'm a long way away, Australia).
But that would mean swapping parts without diagnosis of proof.?
Diagnosis is difficult as the fault needs to be caught at the moment it happens.? Last time I saw one like this was 2+ weeks could not emulate the fault.? I've seen 2 systems HC fault similar couldn't fault either, both came from high humidity.
It could be the CPU or trace to it (Unlikely) but hey?

Knowing that its happening often, I would suggest scattergun approach...change the HC. See how it fares.? At least this narrows the fault.? Maybe contact Michael.? This at least gives a starting point.

Cheers
