Re: 32s RA oscillation?

The 32 second error would be the gearbox, I believe. I had that as well and when I checked the gearbox, I found the housing to be cracked and the gears running very roughly. After Scott sent me a new one, the problem went away.

Best,

Glenn

Re: 32s RA oscillation?

If this is the conventional OPW (straight out the side type, worm under the RA ring gear), then 32 (31.9) sec corresponds to the?
"worm spur gear," according to PECprep's built in values.??

I just don't know where that spur gear is!....I'd guess it must be in the gearbox.? Suggest you try swapping RA and DEC gearboxes to see it that changes the PE analysis. ..

Hi!

I have just upgraded my G11 with a new OPW and a high precision worm - only to find that my RA rms actually became slightly worse....:/ Peter W at the PHD2 user group has helped me with a frequency analysis of my guiding and that shows that there is significant improvement (phew) except for a 32s oscillation that is still there, and actually has increased.

I know there has been a lot of discussion of different frequencies here, but I just cannot find anyplace here that suggests what the 32s might come from. Any suggestions of where to look?

I should say that before upgrading to the OPW, I have upgraded to new high torque motors (about a year ago) and new gear boxes (a few months ago).

Any ideas warmly welcome.

You don't control the amps, it's basically electrical current capacity
and you need a power supply that can supply at least as much as the
mount requires. more amp capacity will not be a problem, less will.

Don¡¯t worry about amps, just make sure whatever you are using for up-converting the voltage can handle at least 5 amps

Ah...no worries.? You only set the voltage between 12 and 18V.? I now use it at 17V adjusted.? The system consumes the amps it needs to function.??

?

How many amps?....

?

I measured the amps my CG11 / Gemini1 and GM8/Gemini1 takes... under 0.5 amp sidereal tracking... and just under 1 amp fast slewing.? On the CG11, I've got a very heavy Meade LX200R 12 inch and its counterweights mounted.? So outputting even 2 amps will be sufficient ...if the supply can keep it reasonably level.??

?

The key word "level" meaning free from a lot of ripple in voltage (the modern AC/DC supplies use small buck-boost high frequency like 400 kHz to do that...not big AC 60 cycle transformers any more).? So people prefer larger amp rated supplies like 4 amp to 5 amp.? But I still get good results from even 2 amp DC output rated supplies, like the 12V ones used on external hard drives.? ?

?

Hard also to know how the China made supplies are really "rated" since cheating on specs gets you more profit.? So I'd sguest you use a 3 amp to 5 amp rated AC/DC supply.??

?

( Now that they are field tested, I'm going to make up some more of my own booster boxes with the volts and amps display.? These are really nice and compact...the DC plug goes in and it will have either Gemini1 4 pin Power cord or Gemini2 power cord out.? Let me know privately if interested....I'll send some pictures ...)

Brian,

Those are nice, potted and presumably heat sinked, good find (and cheap), for a wet nighttime environment. I'm going to have to rework mine a bit.

These worked well for me and have adjustable output voltage:

I also added a DC volt and amp meter to the box, so it shows just how many amps are being drawn during tracking and slewing.

Back again! I bought a 35AH AGM battery to power my mount. Going to get another battery to power laptop and other things. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good DC-DC boost converter? Trying to supply 15VDC @3A to the mount.?

I also just received my AT65EDQ so I'm just around the corner to taking my first image!?

Re: Warming the mount

Hi Greg,?

I'm not opposed to heating the mount bearings but the simplest solution is often the best. If the grease is getting stiff due to cold you will need a lot more heat going into the area than a dew heater but I get the point. I had to learn about using block heaters when I stayed in Canada for a few weeks. Okay so it was western Canada, not eastern but the cold was pretty cold to me which was an eyeopener for a native SoCal boy.?Anyway I'd still suggest using a grease that stays soft and fluffy when very cold and SuperLube is rated for continuous duty from -45F to 450F which should just about cover it.?

YES! the GM8s have the new OPWs now, I'm set to get my GM8 updated with the tucked motors and a new OPW on the RA. Losmandy has been shipping the GM8G with tucked motors and OPWs and they look great.?

Re: G-11G with a stiff RA axis

I finally got an answered phone call at Losmandy today. Tania is shipping me the wavy washer that sits between the clutch halves. She said they don¡¯t routinely install them but provide them when requested by customers. She also said only the new G-11Gs with tucked motors have the clutch with the recess for the washer. Cost is $10. I should have it by Friday. I will post an update once it is installed.

Re: Warming the mount

Thanks, Chip.

Vodka freezing? Been to Moscow? Why I asked about the pipe tapes -- they put out very little heat, mostly warm the object below by contact conduction. And as for sources of heat near OTAs... sounds like that would include dew heaters... just to be difficult, you understand. SoCal cold and Ontario Canada cold are a tad different. But I will keep temperatures in mind when i shop for grease for my mount.

One question -- are those adjustable worm blocks available for the GM-8?
