I'll suggest looking at the assumption that the Guide Camera and the Image Camera connect rigidly.? If the cameras do not comply, due to flexure or mounting issues, then the Guide Camera statistics only apply to the Guide Gamera.? While greater recorded resolution (clarity) makes the condition more apparent on the Image Plate.
Just a guess from the symptoms, as the case of the smaller RMS below 0.5 arc-sec yielding non-round stars does not seem congruent with typical cameras.
