Re: Considering buying a G11 mount for astrophotography.

My Losmandy G-11 returns sub-arcsecond guiding most nights, and with good polar alignment, would give acceptable unguided 5-min subframes with a 80mmm f/6.8 scope.? I couldn't be happier with the system, and would never go back to a lesser mount.? Superb machining, and quality throughout, and very durable. I set up every night in less than 30 mins, and it performs flawlessly. Can I tinker with it? Sure I can, and I have found it very easy to maintain and adjust. I've read the same stories about the G-11, but I am happy to say, that hasn't been my experience.

Hello, Nicholas,
You about nailed it. I found out early through experience that I did not want anymore Chinese? mounts. I had learning issues only with my G11G Gemini 2, all brought on by me. The Gemini 2 system does have its peculiarities that are it's own. Every one here on this Group has been a big help to me especially Michael Herman, Chip Louie and a big special high five for Brian Velente, They got me through it all, now I have had zero issues unless I missed a step in the set up like forgetting to plug the cables in or something like that. LOL... in hindsight? I am glad I did not buy a AP or Paramount the money saved went for more Astro Toys.

Nicholas,

Before my G11G with the Gemini 2 unit I had an Ioptron CEM60 which I returned due to unresolved vibration issues. In comparison, the Losmandy product is far more sturdy and will probably last for decades. On my first setup I learned the mount basics in less than 2 hours. The Losmandy videos on YouTube show you how to operate the Gemini controller with ease. Most folks have the Gemini 2, but many older Gemini units are still around and working well.? Plus the support forum has some great folks who will guide you through any common issues. One of the big pluses to the Losmandy mounts are that they are modular, and you can switch out controllers and motors for repair or trouble shooting without sending the whole rig back to the factory. I've been doing AP with mine for about 3 years now right out of the box without any mechanical repairs.?

Regards,

John
