I think you've got it right, Kenn. Just a slight motion due to gravity and imbalance is all that's needed. Enough to gently push the worm wheel in one direction in between the worm teeth to ensure that they don't float back and forth, as might happen with perfect balance. Too much imbalance will put a greater load on the motors, especially during slews.
