Cautionary Tale

Jeff Davis

With disappointment only for the service and support of the TX-500, I present my own cautionary tale of ownership.

Obviously, YMMV and I hope you have much better luck than I did.

Jeff, I understand your frustration concerning this matter, however, let me put this into perspective a bit. I've owned many brands of radios and still do. Over the years I've had to send in transceivers to a variety of companies for warranty repair. To be quite honest, I can't remember getting any of those radios back in under 90 days, some much longer due to awaiting parts from Japan. That being said, not one came back in under 90 days. Unfortunately, in this particular case, there is a single repair technician for the entirety of the USA. What I'm basically saying is that you should give it some more time before you give up on the process. I'd like to say that this is anomalous, but I would be lying. Hang in there and be patient. Good luck!

Jeff, I too understand your frustration. The repair gentleman is a good guy. He caught pneumonia and that is no joke. I am a retired firefighter of 35 years. I have caught pneumonia 4 times and it is very serious and takes a toll on one’s body, leaving permanent lung damage.?

not piling on here... i purposely purchased a tx-500 spare in the off-chance my first (a used one) went tango uniform... of course, i am a bit of a sick monkey when it comes to things like this - if i find a rig i like, i buy two... of course, i usually jinx myself, and the original keeps going like an energizer bunny, never needing repair (happed w/817, sg-2020, ic-703, etc, and now my tx-500s and ic-7200s)...

i am a bit concerned about the status of the tx-500 bp-500 battery pack, having placed my order Mar. 6 - not a peep, no update, etc... i have no doubt that HRO will refund if the units fail to materialize, and i have not called regarding the pack...

i would think there would be *someone* in the USA who could be a temporary point-man for lab599 until our repair tech gets back on his feet?

at any rate, i empathize w/the frustration regarding repair time... fortunately there are many other fine qrp rigs out there - such as the Penntek TR-35, which has excellent support and can be ordered today (allthough the whizbang TR-45L has a several-month waiting list AFAIK)

hope everything works out

Only 77 days? LOL!
Mine has been at the Service Center since December 2022.
It's true that John, the repair tech, has been in and out of the hospital, but the lack of follow-up is disturbing. I was told back in March that he had parts for repairs and units should be getting fixed soon.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed. As I can no longer have an antenna at my condo, going portable with my TX-500 was the only way to get on HF. It's been six months and counting.

December 2022?! Let me raise you July 2022. In approximately 40 days it will be a year. Roman told me that John had the parts on hand for my radio and he would be able to start repairs again soon…that was in March. I sent a follow up email to Roman tonight.

Mine is also at the repair shop but got an email a month ago saying it was the power amplifier that went bad and that they had sources the parts and it will be sent back shortly... but that was a month ago.

Hopefully all is well with him and/or his helpers
