New To The Group and I have a suggestion!

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Well, I took the plunge.? Wished I had done it earlier as an early adopter a couple years ago and saved $250.? Instead, I was excited with the QRP IC-705 which I still have.? While the 705 has more features there¡¯s a cool factor with the TX-500.? Like an Apple product it just looks cool without it even turned on.? Then when it comes to life you realize it¡¯s even cooler.? ?The stature of diecast aluminum body in so formidable I worry more about the the poor concrete than the radio if I were to drop it.? All kidding aside I¡¯m here now and that all that matters.

?

I liked all of the cables that came with the radio.? The bifurcated cable for the headset is nice but I prefer to use the hand mic.? While the speaker mic is OK it¡¯s not loud enough for me and I thought it would cool to wire up a cable with a female 3.5mm jack to pins 1 and 4 (the speaker output) of the mic connector and that¡¯s just what I did.? Now I¡¯ve got two speakers, one in the mic and a small portable external speaker.? It works great.? Just and idea I thought I¡¯d share with the group as a newbie.

David,

Can you provide a photo of how the wires go and where? I¡¯m not an electronics expert at all but I can do enough to get myself in trouble. That would be very helpful!!!

If you look at the attachment you can see the pins 1 and 4 are used. ?I just used a stereo female jack of an old "Y" cable. ?You just need to ohm out the tip and shield wires and the third ring wire you can cut off. ?Tip should go to pin 4 and ground to 1 although I don't think it will matter much. ?

That's it.?

congrats on your new rig... i never use the mic as of late (requires a mono adapter in order to use headphones)... i took a g10 connector, pulled all unused pins, then wired in a 3.5mm jack.. works great for external speaker or headphones, and you don't have to worry about shorting audio toground

As a (mostly) CW operator, I rarely use the mic so I made a similar lead to connect my headphones directly to the radio. It was the first cable I made for the tx-500 as the supplied ones are incredibly flimsy.
