TX Metr menu setting #22

When menu item 22 (TX Metr) is set to display PWR, it also shows the SWR number to the right of the power graph - nice!
It would also be nice if when the setting is set to SWR that it also show the PWR number to the right of the SWR graph. -- feature request.

AF gain volume during TX varies with power

CW OP, firmware 1.16.06: I know the AF Gain has two independent settings, one for adjusting RX and one for TX sidetone volume. Normally, I have operated the TX-500 at 100% power (sometimes down to 80%). I now have a PA500 amp and so I turned power down to (10%) on the TX-500 (by the way, it's more than 1W, more like 2W). What I noticed is the AF Gain during TX (sidetone volume) varies with the radio's power. At 10% the volume in my earphones is noticeably lower than at 100%. Has anyone else noticed this and is it normal?

Re: New Firmware v1.16.06

Norn et. all,

CB channels was good practice for me.? The real benefit is to have some known frequencies for QRP calling while activating some remote locations.? One less thing to think about while staying safe in the wilds.

Of course we always want more! Like a name field for the channel.

Re: USB Power

Having studied this a tiny bit and learning how the Digirig interface is built, I've learned that the CAT interface is isolated from the rest of the radio to help with RF noise affecting the communications.? What this means is that the USB interface must provide 3.3v to the serial interface chipset in the TX-500 to power up that side of the UART.? I suspect there are optical links to pass the data between radio and computer.

Re: USB Power

Edited

So maybe the PC supplies power (e.g. 5V) to the FTDI plug/chip with 3.3V then going from there to the TX-500??Any idea what it means on the wiring diagram when it says: "Change the power supply to 3.3V?with a line pointing to the 5V on the USB plug? Does that mean 5V in to FTDI circuit and 3V out to the TX-500?

Update: TX-500 manual has a note at bottom of p.4 "*** When connecting with a third-party USB adapter, make sure that an input voltage of 3.3V (10mA) is supplied to the pin."
So, I guess it is an voltage input coming from PC side through FTDI to provide power to the radio port.

Re: USB Power

My googling says the host usually supplies power to the device on a usb to usb connection?

the lab 599 cable is host to serial G12, so there's no USB power negotiation to be had.?

in the lab599 wiring diagram the 3.3v shows as coming from the usb side to the G12 as "in" voltage

that's just my reading of it?

USB Power

My understanding is that many rigs provide power to drive a USB device (e.g. such as the FTDI CAT cable shipped with the TX-500).
Does anyone know whether it's the PC or the TX-500 that provides the power?

?Yes, TRRS connector that will use the earphones and in-line mic.? Based on my testing, I've found the following connections.
T - Right earphone
R1 - Left Earphone
R2 - Common
S - Mic

These cell phone mic's tend to be electret/condenser/capacitor type so I'm connecting to the TX-500 mic input with bias voltage included.? I've tested the circuit design on my TX-500 and it works perfectly.

The PTT button is included in the middle of this circuit board although I've considered using instead an external button with a TS jack on my board.

Then there is a pigtail cable (you can suggest the length you want) with the GX12-6 connector.

Years ago I was a factory certified PCB repair tech so my soldering skills are considered expert level.? I started playing with circuits back when TTL was a new thing.

If someone with a 3d printer wants to design a case, let me know.

Re: VOX Continuous with BM-17DDYN and custom adapter cable

Speaker and mic grounds appear to be isolated--there's separate cables for each element and there is no DC continuity between the grounds.

Thanks, I get it. I was just curious about it but mainly interested in the channel programming feature, not for CB use but for HF.

Re: VOX Continuous with BM-17DDYN and custom adapter cable

Is the headset speaker common connected in any way to the mic & PTT common?? Since the TX-500 speaker outputs are 'balanced', there can be no connection to any common/ground.

Norm, I have friends who still use CB so this allows me to "stay in touch".? I started in that unlicensed mode back in the late 70's and it was part of what helped me to be interested in upgrading to Tech.? By the way, back then my handle was 'Armstrong'.

Uninformed user with a question: What is the purpose of this feature? Is it so you can store a particular frequency and get to it faster than by manually changing bands and spinning the VFO knob to the desired frequency? Also, why would someone want "CB" channels? Just curious...

Re: New Firmware v1.16.06

CB channels can be handy while traveling for traffic/accident advisories (besides, 'smokey' lookout reports)

:-)

Re: New Firmware v1.16.06

Norm...?
Yes, that's exactly the purpose.

As for the CB channels, I guess that's what makes this hobby so great; We all have different interests. It's nice to see different aspects included in updates.

Cheers,

Re: Headset option

Hi Nick,

looks good, but shipping to Europe doubles the price - so a little expensive then.
