Just open it and inspect power input circuits and components near the battery. Could be something trivial. If everything is ok there then things are worse that it could be.

Spec is "External power supply DC 9-15V, 1 to 3A typical in transmit" from the site main page. You may have run at 18V and been ok but im going to call that more luck and not something one should do.

The BP-500 is setup as 3s2p, so using 3500mah cells that gives a total capacity of 7ah. Best in class by a long ways. Just a side note: the supplied AC/DC charging adapter is very RF noisy on all HF
