Since I didn't get an answer form anybody who tried the settings update utility software successfully, I asked Lab599.
Roman answered my email swiftly and after some forth and back, he sent me a new firmware (version 1.16.15) that I installed and tested with the utility: All seems to work with the new firmware version, including the memory cell programming utility (that was working fine before).
My conclusion: You'll have to wait for an upcoming firmware version to use this settings update utility.
According Roman, the official firmware update should be published soon.
