Australian Lotus 23 # 23 S 23
Many of you will have read in the old newsletters of the controversy
over Lotus 23 S 23 and its division among several owners. There are (or were) three such claimants in the USA and Canada, and one in Australia. It now seems that the one in Australia is not another car number 23 S 23 but a car with a chassis marked 23/23. Or maybe something else. The origin of the chassis is not now known. Shall we ever know for sure? Regards to all Bill Steagall Moderator/Registrar |

Greetings & Salutations,
I would like to thank you for allowing me to join the Lotus 23 Registry group. My name is John Mihalich, Jr. and although I have do not have a 23, I own two Lotus 61's and race one of them in Vintage events. I am also the registrar for the Lotus Formula Ford Register (). With the close kinship of the 20's, 22's, 23's, 31's, 51's and 61's and the many bits and bobs that they share, I consider it to be an asset to be able to watch what is happening in the world of the 23's and hopefully apply it to the Formula Fords. From alternate parts sources, to failures, to car prep.... who knows what information may pop up and be of interest. I will most likely be just a lurker, here. If there is information of interest to the Lotus FF group, I'll forward that across to our Yahoo Group at: which, of course, you are invited to join, if you wish. If we have something that may be of interest to the Lotus 23 Registry members, I'll forward that information here. If I could be of any service, please let me know. I would suggest you contact two Lotus parts suppliers who should be able to help you. They are: 1. Lee Chapman Racing at www.leechapmanracing.com 2. Xanthos Cars (UK) at www.xanthoscars.co.uk Good luck, Gary From: "mcrvision" <e_larouche@...> Reply-To: L23Registry@... To: L23Registry@... Subject: [L23Registry] chassis and suspension spec. chassis and suspension spec.
Hi everyone
Knowing now that Lotus 23 information is dificult to gather i'm asking help here. I'm currently doing a university project about Lotus whitch the main focus is the Lotus23. In the process i need to analyse the Chapman design with todays tools (FEA,CAD,etc...) But my concern now is finding some chassis and suspension spec and drawing to put in the softwares. If anyone can help it wouls be greatly apreciated. Thank's alot!! Eric |
Re: Water and the chassis dont mix?
Eric,
It pains me to say this, as I took great pains to restore the chassis of my Lotus 23 and to return to using the chassis tubes for the water, but if you have any real problems, then a new chassis may just be unavoidable.
When finally I sold my 23 (age and disability), the first thing the new owner did was get a new chassis. Sob.

Re: Water in the frame tubes
开云体育another solution is Stainless steel braided lines (not the teflon for
brakes, but rubber). Weighs more, but it may take a crushing better than the
aluminum tube, and thus less to clean up by the turn
marshalls. |
Water in the frame tubes
Don Stark
Eric,
If you have leaks in the frame tubes that have been carrying cooling water, you might look at this frame tube carefully. The leak may be coming from a crack in the tube (generally at a weld point) or it may be coming out of a place that has rusted through the tube. In the first case, the tube should be rewelded or brazed depending on your frame. In the second case, you might look at replacing the tube. If it has gotten all the way through in one place, it might be very thin in many others and this would compomise the strength of the tube. The suggestion of running aluminum tubes separetly for cooling water and oil is a good one. It makes the frame last longer. Don Stark |
Re: Water and the chassis dont mix?
开云体育Eric,
??? Using the frame tubes to conduct the water and oil is
and idea that has come and gone.? Replumb them both.? You can buy
aluminum tube to route the water from front to rear and back again.? Since
it was not part of your question I presume that you do not route the oil through
the frame.? Are you going to the race at Barber Motorsports Park on the
weekend of April 1-3?

开云体育For
over 30 years I have been using the original chassis tubes to run the water to
the radiator.
?
I now
have a leaking problem in the bottom tube, and think I will have to stop using
the chassis.

What
does everyone else do?

Lotus 23 Mufflers
Don Stark
As promised, I took some pictures of my Lotus 23 muffler
installation that should show how it is done. Just go to the photos and look in the file labeled pictures. The last 5 pictures are of the muffler installation. I had a great time this weekend at an HMSA race at Laguna Seca. I was worried about the weather but it was nice and Sunny Fri. through Sun. Most importantly it was dry! I had problems Sat with an improvement I made to the gas pedal. I made a little extension so I could get to the pedal when braking and downshifting. The first time out, I found that I was getting the brake and throttle under hard braking. After almost going off at the corkscrew and actually going off at turn 2 at the end of the straight, I corrected things by removing my improvement. This is what we have to live with when we have size 12 feet. With more confidence that the car would stop, I set my fastest time at Laguna Seca on Dunlop Ms at a 1:47. I was hoping for more but the track was green from all the rains we have had in California of late. We had a good weekend and the car and driver returned none the worst for wear. That is, all in one piece and in working order! Don Stark |
